An answer to car importer Max Hoffman’s request for a sportier version of the BMW 02 Series, the 2002 model was introduced to the American market in 1968 featuring a more powerful 2.0-liter M10 engine. This 1972 example is said to have been cared for by the same family for over three decades and had been sitting idle for several years when it was acquired by the seller. The car has since undergone a restoration in its original color combination along with an engine and transmission rebuild, new exhaust, refurbished interior, and upgraded suspension. This timeless European classic is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Maryland.

This 2002 is said to have been stripped to bare metal during the restoration and refinished in its original color of Agave Green followed by a layer of clear coat, wet sanding, and professional detailing. The seller reports that the car’s bodywork was found to be very solid and without rust during the process. It features silver stripe accents on each side along with chrome bumpers and upgraded 13” basketweave wheels dressed in new Kumho Solus radial tires. Additional images are provided in the gallery.

The Cognac interior has been restored with new carpeting along with cleaning and refurbishment of the original dashboard, leather seats, and door panels. An upgraded Retrosound Bluetooth stereo has been installed in addition to a MOMO three-spoke steering wheel and Kugleworks center console with VDO gauges for battery voltage, temperature, and oil pressure. The seller states the car originally had a dealer-installed Clardy AC system that was removed during the restoration and the center console was modified to accommodate for the realtor radio and VDO gauges.

A carbureted 2.0-liter M10 inline four-cylinder engine delivers up to 100 HP to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual gearbox. The seller reports both the engine and transmission were rebuilt during the restoration along with the installation of a new clutch, exhaust, and a Korman Autoworks suspension including upgraded sway bars, springs, shocks, and bushings.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, some documentation, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for looking at our restored 1972 BMW 2002! This car had a recent restoration with nice upgrades including suspension, exhaust, wheels, and tires, and has been fully serviced and is ready to hit the road! This is a rare car with factory AC and a manual transmission. We look forward to your questions and comments and wish everyone good luck with the auction!”

As requested paint meter readings have been uploaded.
@rnak the first video was a cold start, no rough idle as you could see by the tach needle not bouncing up and down and there is no miss which was evident by the test drive how smooth the car was.

Hi Seller- Please post paint meter readings, especially down low on the body panels. Any documentation, whatsoever, on work that was done? Were any attempts made to fix the rough idle/miss? You may want to post a new video of the car running, sounds like someone put a hand full of marbles in the valve cover.

@SummerYellow thank you for your comments. We will have the advertisement correct to reflect that the car had the Clardy system and it was removed with the center console then being modified to accommodate the VDO gauge cluster and the retro stereo.
The weather stripping is being replaced and at the time of the photos had not been done but will be in time for the new owner to enjoy the car.
We found the car was painted red by the last owner who wanted a red sports car and we did not remove the sticker or data plate
I looked at the hood where the belt line trim was and it appears to have welds in the areas where the trim was attached
We will have undercarriage posted shortly

Lots of evidence of a previous red paint job.
There was no factory A/C offered on a 2002 it could have been dealer installed. This car does not appear to have A/C regardless. Also note the weather strip rubber is old and deteriorated around the door (pic. 29).
Would be great to see underneath and all the neat Korman parts. Maybe receipts from the engine build and restoration?
When the belt line trim was deleted were all the holes welded or just filler?
Lots of potential and lots of questions with a good looking ‘02.

Stunning 2002. Really nice job. Are the rocker stripes painted or decals?
