Up for auction is this highly original 1972 Jeep Wagoneer SJ finished in Butterscotch Gold over a black interior with Houndstooth upholstery.  Often considered to be the original sport utility vehicle, the Jeep Wagoneer was a pioneer of the premium 4x4 market, offering a standard of luxury unseen on any other similar vehicle of the time.  Reported to have been purchased new and kept by the seller’s family, this pre-Chrysler 1972 example was eventually acquired by the seller approximately 10 years ago with only 31k original miles shown on the odometer.  It has since been refreshed with a number of mechanical services including the installation of a solid-state distributor and a new gas tank.  This beautifully preserved Jeep Wagoneer is now being offered by its seller in New Jersey while showing just over 36k miles on the odometer, accompanied by the original books and window sticker as well as a clean title.

The Butterscotch Gold exterior finish is reported to be in excellent, mostly original condition with only minor road-going wear and patina (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  The driver’s side rear door and quarter panel are said to have been refinished during the 1990s following cosmetic damage, and the seller reports that a rust prohibitor coating has been applied to the underside of the engine bay.  Manufactured by AMC shortly after the company was purchased from Kaiser Motors, this Jeep can be recognized by the egg crate pattern front grille that was introduced during the 1970 model year.  This Wagoneer retains its original wheels and hubcaps, with new tires installed at the time of the seller’s purchase within the last 5500 miles.

The cabin is upholstered in black leatherette and Houndstooth fabric.  The driver’s side of the bench seat shows some wear on the upholstery and the cabin is said to be in otherwise excellent original condition.  The original radio remains in place and the seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be fully functional except for the gas gauge.  This example was not factory equipped with air conditioning or power windows.

After 1971, the Jeep Wagoneer SJ was equipped with an updated AMC 360ci (5.9L) V8 engine rated at 175 HP and 285 lb.-ft of torque.  This example features a Hydra-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission that offers part-time all-wheel drive.  Since the seller’s acquisition at 31k miles, this Jeep has received an upgraded solid-state distributor with new ignition wires and spark plugs, a new gas tank, water pump, starter, ignition switch, brake master cylinder, oil pan, and head gaskets.  Some wiring harness repair was also done and a complete collection of service records dating back to the original purchase is included in the sale.

This Jeep will be accompanied by a set of 2 keys, the original owner’s manual and shop booklet, the original window sticker, factory distributor, extra interior armrests, and a clean title.  A true time capsule of a car with a thorough history of family ownership, this remarkable Jeep Wagoneer is ready to begin its journey with a new owner.

@KarBob44, it is a station wagon with a sliding roof. It is only rear wheel drive "Twin trac" which is Studebaker's version of positrac.

  • KarBob44 (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@Fringecarcollector Interesting. I knew Studenaker made pick up trucks, but did not know they also made an SUV type vehicle. Was it four wheel drive like the Wagoneer?

  • Fringecarcollector (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

The commonalities between the Wagoneer and the Studebaker Wagonaire, both penned by Brooks Stevens, are astounding. Even the steering wheel and emblem/horn button are nearly identical to by 1963 Wagonaire.

For those interested, this 1972 Jeep is all original (except for new gas tank and solid state distributor) and I have the factory distributor. It is a family heirloom, bought by my uncle Herman in 1972. Always garaged, never taken into the woods or off road anywhere. I inherited it from my uncle when he died in 2010, and I have treated it just as he did. Includes two ashtrays (never used), two vent windows and zero cup holders.

@mmalamut Underside photos have been added to the listing

  • KarBob44 (seller) 3 years, 4 monthsago

Sure. I responded re: the distributor and will send underside photos. This Jeep is a family heirloom. My uncle Herman bought it new. Always garaged. Never taken off road. When he retired in 1985 he only drove to the golf course. He always had a daily driver. He left it to me in 2010 when he died.
