An especially significant model year for the Porsche 911, 1972 saw the introduction of a new Type 915 manual transmission, a larger 2.4-liter engine, and a unique external oil filler lid (Ölklappe) which was discontinued the following year. This 911T Targa was originally delivered to the United States and eventually acquired by the seller who restored the car in 2017 before it was sold to a private collector in Germany. Showing a numbers-matching engine and just over 2,000km on the odometer since the restoration, this 911T is now being offered for auction by its seller in the Netherlands.
This 911T was completely refinished in the current shade of Light Blue during its restoration. The accompanying Porsche birth certificate shows the car’s factory color to have been Sepia Brown and the optional Appearance Group (470) which adds gold model lettering to the rear decklid along with wider rubber deco trim to the chrome bumpers. Other equipment includes dual chrome mirrors, a removable black Targa top, and chrome 15” Fuchs wheels dressed in Pirelli P6000 tires.
The cabin has been reupholstered and fitted with a pair of sport seats featuring pepita houndstooth centers and matching cushions in the rear. The optional Appearance Group adds a leather-covered steering wheel and upgraded instrument dials from the 911S. The driver is also provided with basic amenities including a heater, rear window defogger, locking glovebox, and manual roll-up windows.
The 2.4-liter flat-six engine is equipped with mechanical fuel injection and offered an original output of up to 140 HP, which is sent to the rear wheel by way of a 5-speed manual gearbox. The seller notes the engine is original to the car and was completely rebuilt during the restoration along with the transmission, brakes, and suspension. The seller would like you to know: “We offer for sale this beautiful Porsche 911T Targa Ölklappe from 1972. As the name suggests, this is anything but a standard 911. This Porsche is equipped with the so-called ölklappe, a filler cap that was used to facilitate filling the oil tank. However, this unique design was scrapped after just one year, some say because inattentive station attendants put petrol in the oil tank. Since this version was only produced for one year, it has become a true collector's item and is very popular among Porsche enthusiasts. The Porsche 911T Targa Ölklappe that we offer for sale here was nut and bolt restored a few years ago by our own restoration workshop and is in absolute top condition. Naturally, the restoration has been recorded in an extensive photo report, as has the engine overhaul. After the restoration, the Porsche has only been driven for about 2000 km, which means that it is in as good as new condition. This Targa was delivered new in the United States, which means that the engine is more powerful than the European version and is also equipped with MFI (Mechanical Fuel Injection). It is powered by a matching-numbers 2340cc 6-cylinder engine with a 5-speed manual transmission. How does someone from the US feel good about the complications of buying a car sight unseen from overseas? Is there a reasonable way to may US buyers feel comfortable?
This 911 was restored for a German classic car collector, who had also section of his cars in “light blue”. So when he knew this car was being restored, he wanted to make the deal and chose this color and he insisted that it would get the houndstooth interior(called Pepita in Germany). Of course, color is always very personal. Due to the fact this German owner has owned his car happily for several years I know that the quality of this beauty is in exceptional condition, will turn heads, bring you lots of joy and will not disappoint in the collection!
@dno76 could it be Glacier Blue? Regardless this '72 Targa in blue with the houndstooth interior is exceptional.
