1973 Porsche 911S Targa w/ Sport Seats

We are pleased to offer this 1973 Porsche 911S Targa finished in Aubergine over a brown leatherette interior.  One of only 925 examples produced for the 1973 model year, this 911S Targa was specified for the U.S. market and came factory optioned with desirable Sport Seats.  It was treated to a major restoration by the specialists at CPR Classic in 2011 at a cost of over $100k including a full rebuild of its original 5-speed gearbox and mechanically fuel-injected 2.4L flat-six engine.  A fine representation of one of the last long hood Porsche 911s, this stunning 1973 Targa is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Massachusetts with less than 15k miles driven since the restoration.

This Targa came factory finished in the nonmetallic shade of Aubergine and was completely refinished in its original color during the restoration after being stripped to bare metal.  The Targa top was completely restored and all the rubber seals and gaskets throughout the body were replaced along with the 911S deco moldings, rocker end caps, horn grilles, and many other trim pieces and fittings.  European spec taillight lenses were installed in addition to chrome bumperettes with rubber overriders.  A detailed restoration invoice from CPR Classic is provided in the gallery and the seller notes two small paint defects on the passenger side.  All five 15” Fuchs wheels were restored to factory specifications by Al Reed Polishing and have been dressed in a set of Michelin tires.

The cabin has been completely restored with new brown leatherette upholstery and matching OEM carpeting.  The factory Sport Seats have been re-covered with German OEM material and a fully restored factory dash assembly was installed along with new lower dash knee pads and window crank handles.  The shift lever was also restored in its original black finish along with the inner door handles.  A period Clarion stereo is equipped with a vintage equalizer mounted beneath the passenger-side dashboard.  Over $10k was invested in the restoration of the interior as detailed in the corresponding invoices.

The original air-cooled 2.4L flat-six engine and Bosch mechanical fuel injection system were completely rebuilt by CPR Classic including the installation of new Mahle pistons and cylinders, titanium retainers, Supertec head studs and valve springs, Carrera chain tensioners, a rebuilt distributor, new flywheel, and high-performance Sachs clutch.  The numbers matching 915 5-speed manual gearbox was also rebuilt to factory specifications with new bearings, shift forks, synchro rings, and a Wrightwood Racing gasket set.  The brakes, suspension, and electrical systems were also completely overhauled, and all suspension components were powdercoated in a correct satin black finish.  More recently in the Spring of 2021, a full overhaul of the ignition system was carried out along with the installation of new sway bar link bushings and oil and filter changes.  Corresponding invoices are provided in the gallery.

This sale will include restoration and service records, a matching full-size spare Fuchs wheel, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and a clean title. A fine choice for any discerning collector or air-cooled Porsche enthusiast, this outstanding 1973 911S Targa is ready to be displayed, driven, and enjoyed.

I've just taken a close up video of the passenger side of the car as well and will upload. Truthfully, it is all relatively un-noticeable from beyond a few feet. But, we disclose everything so no surprises for the next owner of this tremendous car. Adam

@ravenna45 There is, essentially, a single scratch on the passenger side of the car from just behind the headlamp lense to just above the taillamp lense. It is not a continuous scratch the whole way. Slightly into the paint at the very front and rear, my fingernail just catches it. A bit deeper in the paint near the center of the passenger side door. I've provides photos of these three areas. Note that we have not done anything to mask or remedy these marks; I'd anticipate that a trusted paint correction expert could make them significantly better. The one person that I trust locally has been away traveling so I've not had it worked on here.

Could you expound on the 2 "small" blemishes on the passenger side please?

  • Ravenna45 (registered bidder) 6 months, 1 weekago

@nosubstitute4porsche There is no fixing those visors. I just replaced mind from Sierra Madre collection and the worked perfectly and were easy to install. If you go to the Porsche Classic center they can also help but very pricey.

nice car... does anyone know who can fix sun visors? I can vaguely recall someone mentioning spray foam with the visor in a form of some sort? This car seems to have the same issue as my 71E... GLWA.. you sure have had some awesome cars..

Now this is a proper driving video. The engine sounds outstanding; no noisy vale train, no noisy cam chain, nothing but a nice tight like-new air cooled Porsche. Thanks for the proper video! Good Luck!

Hi all, I've added a nice 11-minute long cold start and driving video to the listing, along with a few detailed photos of the paint imperfections. Thanks, Adam

Gorgeous 911S Targa! I had a 1969 911T coupe in Aubergine with a cream interior. Always loved that rare combination. Best of luck to bidders and seller!

Copley Motorcars: I will be bidding to win on this Targa. I really like it. My summer home is about 50 miles from you in Osterville on Cape Cod. I am in the middle of a major renovation of my home and garages and I will not be able to garage this car there before March of 2022. Can you find indoor heated storage for this Targa in your area until I am able to take delivery?
