Available for auction is this 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 finished in blue over a black vinyl interior. First produced in 1960, the 40-Series Land Cruiser was created as a competitor to the American Jeep and British Land Rover, and is widely considered one of the most capable and robust off-road vehicles of all time. This 1974 example was the subject of a recent mechanical refresh which included an engine reseal, servicing of the air conditioning system, a new clutch and flywheel, new brake system components, and much more. In addition to the mechanical updates, it recently received a custom sound system and a new canvas top.

This FJ40 comes finished in blue with a removable canvas soft top in grey. The finish is said to remain in nice overall condition, and the canvas top was recently replaced. Some light rust is noted on some of the exposed screws. Details include front and rear steel bumpers, rear ambulance-style doors, a rear-mounted spare tire and gas can, and a set of grey-finished 15” steel wheels with polished hubcaps and Avante tires.

The cabin features a split front bench upholstered in black vinyl along with rear inward-facing jump seats. The floors are protected by a black rubber lining and the body-colored dashboard houses a suite of instrumentation, a locking glove box, and an upgraded radio head unit. A custom sound system including a sound bar was recently installed at a cost of nearly $4,500, and the air conditioning compressor is said to have been rebuilt with new seals and refrigerant. Other recent services include a new windshield washer pump and hardware and the rewiring of the gauges.

Power comes from a carbureted 3.9-liter inline six-cylinder engine, which recently received a comprehensive service including machining of the block, a rebuilt crankshaft, cleaning and adjustment of the carburetor, new spark plugs, oil pan assembly, exhaust muffler, oil pump, and all new seals. The rear or all four wheels are driven by way of a 4-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case. A new clutch and flywheel were recently installed along with the clutch slave cylinder. The suspension and braking systems have been serviced with new front wheel cylinders, tie rod ends, pitman arm, springs, brake master cylinder, brake drums, and more.

This sale will include a clean title.

@Littlehandegan Front disc brakes were introduced to the FJ in 1976.

With the major mechanical refresh, the car received prior to being listed the car feels great at all speed ranges. I would say cruising speeds between 40 mph - 50mph, but this example can handle more when needed and feels tight.

    Whats top (reasonable cruising speed?)

@sirringo This example was imported from Colombia back in 2017. (No import records accompany the car.) We do not have receipts for it, but the vehicle is stated to have been repainted back in 2019.

The major refresh work performed recently was performed by Euro Autohouse/Simonson Foreign Car Service
