This late-model 914 was originally sold through Sandizell Porsche Audi of Madison, Wisconsin, finished in optional Ancona Blue Metallic paint along with stabilizer bars front and rear, forged alloy wheels, and the Appearance Group trim package.  The car had remained in Wisconsin almost its entire life while cared for by three prior owners.  It has been with the current owner for the past 5 years, during which time extensive refurbishments have been completed while the car earned awards at various concours events.  Showing approximately 52k miles on the odometer, this beautifully appointed 914 1.8 is now being offered for auction by its owner out of Northern Virginia accompanied by the original window sticker and extensive documentation.

This 914 was ordered in optional Ancona Blue Metallic paint, a shade borrowed from VW’s color palette and offered on the Porsche 914 from 1975-1976.  This example comes equipped with a vinyl-covered roll bar, white side stripes, pop-up headlights, a removable hardtop, and the optional Appearance Group which equips fog lights in the front bumper.  This 914 was reportedly refinished in its original color in September of 2015, and the seller reports it has been carefully maintained and garage-kept throughout their ownership. One small touched-up imperfection is noted on the front hood, additional images are provided in the gallery.  Refurbishment carried out by the current owner includes new taillight and turn signal lenses, upgraded sealed-beam headlamps, front trunk drain tube, and new weatherstripping seals for the Targa top, windows, side markers, door jambs, cowl, and fenders.  Replacement 15” Empi Fuchs wheels are equipped with Michelin XZX tires, and the original set of Mahle forged wheels is said to accompany the sales.

The black interior has been refreshed with reupholstered houndstooth seat centers and black vinyl backings as well as a new dash top, LED gauge bulbs, red and black Coco floormats, a leather steering wheel cover, and an updated Bluetooth radio with a detachable antenna.  The factory optioned Appearance Group adds a center storage box with an armrest as well as a leatherette shifter boot, and a center console with a clock, oil temperature gauges, and voltage meter.  Other refurbishments carried out by the owner include replacement of the speedometer cable, upper dashboard trim strip, speaker housings, heater blower ducting, washer switch, washer hoses, sun visors, window cranks, wiper relay, and wiper blades.  All gauges and accessories are said to be fully functional and the seller reports both the tachometer and fuel level gauge to have been recalibrated during their ownership.

The air-cooled 1.8L flat-four engine features electronic fuel injection and drives the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual gearbox.  Four-wheel disc brakes come standard and optional front and rear stabilizer bars were equipped from the factory.  Upgraded stainless steel heat exchangers were installed under prior ownership. The original stamped factory service book accompanies the sale and a 45k-mile recommended service was carried out in 2017.  Items addressed under current ownership include replacement of battery cover, oil cooler, engine and differential seals, shifter bushings, alternator belt, throttle cable, vacuum hoses, master cylinder, fuel lines, front and rear brake pads, rear calipers, rear struts and springs, repacked front wheel bearings, new steering rack boots, parking brake cables, a muffler, steering wheel bushings, and air and fuel filters. New gaskets were also installed for the fuel filler neck, fuel cap, and expansion tank.

This sale will include the original window sticker, toolkit, service book, owner's manual, Ziebart receipt, multiple keys, and a clean title. Sporting desirable factory options and thoroughly refurbished over the past several years, this 914 is a great choice for any enthusiast in search of a vintage air-cooled Porsche.

This owner is very active in concours. I have seen this in person and he takes really immaculate care of his cars. You could eat off them.

@jagalyn pictures of two of the Mahle wheels have been sent to PCA for posting. They all are in good condition but do need repainting in order to be in a condition commensurate with the car.

@fevr Do you have photos of the mahle wheels that are included in this auction? Are they in good condition? Please post photos. Thank you.

  • MCShack (registered bidder) 2 years, 2 monthsago

@Fevr Hmm, curious why the owner can't post a chassis or engine serial number in the comments, but pics are always better, thank you. Just as I knew they would, the numbers all fall within the expected range, the chassis number indicates the car was the 23rd car built on Friday, May 30, 1975, at the Karmann facility in Osnabrück, Germany where they were all made. The DOT sticker shows a date of 06/75 but was probably just put on Monday morning after the weekend break. The VIN, chassis number, and engine number show that this was one of the last 914 1.8L cars made since they were discontinued in '75 and no '76 1.8L models produced, only 2.0L engine cars were made until the end of 1975 when Porsche pulled the plug on the 914s forever. Thank you for the pictures and additional information, I'm sure some of your bidders will appreciate it. She is a real beauty and someone is going to own one of the best looking and fun cars to drive ever built. GLWA!

@MCShack further info on the engine number: the last digit, not visible in the photo, is a “6.” Hope this helps.

  • Fevr (seller) 2 years, 2 monthsago

@MCShack I understand that the photos requested, and which were taken within an hour of your inquiry yesterday, have now posted. My reply yesterday, which included the respective numbers, was kicked back because of those numbers. If these photos leave something to be desired, please let me know and I will try again. Thx for your interest and more than extensive knowledge!

@Fevr Can you provide a close-up picture of the Karmann tag shown in pic #43 and #51 with the entire Chassis number legible? Or just provide the number at least? A better shot of the VIN in #71 would be nice but not necessary, just confirms all numbers match. Lastly, can you get a picture of the engine serial number from the top of the engine casing? It always helps to know that the VIN, chassis, and engine numbers match and fall within the correct date range which I have zero doubt that this car is all 100% correct. A shot of any document such as a COA with the engine number and chassis number works just as well but they so rarely have all that information.

Love, love, love the color and even the red interior is growing on me, haha. It is one great looking '75 914 and obviously well cared for over the years and miles. The '75 1.8s don't get the respect of the 2.0s but this car proves they deserve it. Doesn't matter what car it is, someone will no doubt ask for the rocker panel covers to be removed for pictures of the longs and jack point holes, not to mention several 8x10 glossies of the "Hell Hole" from every angle possible as well as pictures with the carpet removed from passenger compartment floors, front and rear trunks with spare, carpet and padding removed. I'm not that guy, but don't be surprised when those questions come. Thank you for your time and Good Luck With the Auction!!

Welcome all to this auction for an exceptionally solid and clean 914. No rust anywhere since this car has been a fair weather, sparingly used driver only. Original Zeibart did it’s job. A unique color that always draws attention when simply parked or at a Concours that provokes plenty of “ooo’s and aah’s from prior owners or those who like looking at a pristine older car. Any questions, please ask and I will get you the information sought. Plenty of parts replaced to make this back into a low original mileage mid-70’s cream puff. Good luck!!
