Now up for auction is this collector-grade 1976 Porsche 914 2.0L finished in Light Ivory over a black interior.  Originally sold from Century Motors of Bismarck, North Dakota, this 914 is said to have remained under the diligent care of its original owner for its first 40 years.  Reported to have been garage kept and only driven during the summertime, this 914 was eventually purchased by its second owner in Canada in 2015 who is said to have added no more than 100 miles during his 5 years of ownership.  It was acquired by its seller, the third owner, about one year ago and has since undergone extensive detailing and routine maintenance to bring the car up to a very high cosmetic and mechanical standard.  Remaining highly original and with its dealer-installed 914 decals retained as part of Porsche’s Sebring promotion, this exceptional Porsche 914 2.0 is now being listed for auction by its seller out of Canada while showing 39k documented miles on the odometer.

The Light Ivory finished is described to be all original and free of any noteworthy flaws or imperfections.  The seller reports that countless hours were invested under his ownership in detailing to ensure an excellent overall appearance, additional images are provided in the photo gallery.  Complete Ziebart anti-corrosion treatment has been applied from new and there are no rust issues noted by the seller. The circular “914” decals on the side were originally installed by the selling dealer as part of a special Sebring promotion by Porsche.  This example rides on factory 15” Mahle Gas Burner wheels that were recently dressed in a set of new tires.

Inside, you will find a well-preserved black leatherette basketweave-pattern interior.  Features include a factory center armrest console, two-way adjustable seats, a vanity mirror, a removable hardtop, a trip odometer, and a dealer-installed cassette radio.  All gauges and accessories are said to be fully functional.

This final model-year 1976 example carries a 2.0L flat-four engine derived from the 912E.  This fuel-injected air-cooled platform generates as much as 95 HP, which is sent to the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual gearbox.  This example is factory equipped with the optional Performance Group which adds front and rear sway bars.  Under the current ownership, a number of maintenance items were addressed including new rear springs, front struts, upgraded stainless steel brake lines, gear linkage bushings, and new fluids and filters.

This sale will include both sets of keys, the original books, window sticker, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and a clean title.  The seller is currently traveling and will not be available to facilitate the delivery of this vehicle until April 17th.  For any collector on the hunt for a highly original Porsche 914, this remarkable 1976 example is not to be overlooked.

I was asked about the stance at the rear. Since the photos were taken I replaced the rear springs. This has had the effect of raising the car slightly at the rear by about an inch.

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 yearsago

Just over two hours to go on the auction of my 914. Please do ask any questions you have. I’ll be following closely from here on in.

If you’ve been looking for the perfect 914 in terms of originality and provenance - then this might well be the one for you. Hope you bid and manage to buy my 914

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 yearsago

@robmsales hi Rob. I agree with you that the car would look better without the decal. That was my original plan to be honest. They could, in my view, be removed with care, and not damage the paint.

I wouldn’t say they are after market decals. They were a Porsche Sebring promotion, put out by Porsche themselves. The part is a Porsche part number. Nothing after market about them.

It’s a personal choice and I totally respect that. If you bid and got the car when the hammer falls you can certainly remove them. The car would look cleaner and probably better. But my choice was to keep after doing the research via the 914World forum, and after Loretta told me they were supplied with the brand new car from the dealer.

  • robmsales (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

@LorettaKnutson I just think it's taking away from the Porsche in today's standards, I don't consider a dealer-installed decal an OEM item, that aftermarket.
It's my opinion - but have owned 50+ Porsche my first was when I was in High School and worked three jobs to feed my car craze, I have a right to that option-the car would look a lot better w/o them- sorry but you did sell the car and I'm a buyer, I would want to make the 914 looks better, not hold onto a dealer-installed 45-year decal

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 yearsago

@LorettaKnutson I’m with you on this one. The decals were on the car from new, fitted by the dealer as a Porsche promotion, using a Porsche factory supplied decal.

In keeping with the rest of the car’s originality, I think they should be remain on the doors. It all adds to the character and history of this car. Only original once. Just my personal view.

  • LorettaKnutson 3 yearsago

@robmsales Why would you want to do that. They were on the car at purchase - original?

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 yearsago

@LorettaKnutson thank you so much for adding your contribution to the auction. You kept the car in such amazing and cared for condition. A credit to you for the condition that the car’s in now.

I know how much this car means to you - and really hope the new owner will cherish it. Thank you again Loretta.

  • LorettaKnutson 3 yearsago

I am the original owner. Century Motors was in Mandan, ND - twin city to Bismarck. Car was purchased in 1976 from the showroom floor. What a beauty, then and now. Early car miles were from travel between Iowa City, IA where I lived at purchase, and Bismarck, ND where my siblings live. Car was always kept pristine. So hard to part with it and hope to see it back in my garage someday.

Sharing answers to a couple of questions I received via the contact seller.

Yes, the rear trunk foam pad is present. It’s original and in perfect condition. These normally get thrown out, worn out or rotten out. There has been no water ingress or condensation.

    The radio works fine.

I’m happy to store the car in the garage for a few weeks to help with shipping arrangements, no problems.

The targa top is in mint condition. I doubt it’s spent much time in place, always in the rear trunk.

There is no rubber degradation on any rubber parts and seals - probably because the car didn’t see a lot of sunlight in its life.

Paint meter readings on all panels throughout the car are consistent at 4 to 5 - meaning no respray and factory original. Previous long term owner confirmed she had no bumps or scrapes and the car never had any issues. 39k of trouble free motoring.

The car comes with all documents, several 914 books (including a signed copy of Brett Johnston’s 914 Authentication book (with the car featured), a 914 car cover, and the original tool kit and roll

The photos of the underside have now been uploaded. These were taken a few months ago. Since then, I’ve continued to detail the underside.

You’ll notice the black Zeibart has come away a little from the white paint in the wheel arch areas. I’ve touched these areas up.

You’ll see the ‘hell hole’ both sides. I found them completely rust free. I cleaned up the area, applied zinc under coat and then top coat. I also removed the rubber grommet from the water drain plug hole to allow free water flow - the cause of all the rust issues with this design.

You can see the front brake callipers. I removed the pads and cleaned etc.

Zero rust anywhere on the car. The wheel pictured is the original spare, never been used.

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 yearsago

@Fastauto yes. COA confirms matching numbers.

  • Fastauto (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

I assume everything is matching numbers? Great looking example!

  • Fastauto 3 yearsago

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 yearsago

@faizulali you’ll also see the car comes with the two sets of keys and antenna keys. These come in the neat Porsche crested vinyl pouches in perfect condition.

I was thinking what else have I done on the car since I owned it, and not mentioned before. New tires all round, replaced the fuel filter, changed the brake fluids, new plugs and points, air filter, adjusted clutch cable, removed and rubbed down exhaust system and repainted in the correct Porsche grey. The exhaust is factory fit original and in perfect condition. Really rare for a 914. Most rotted out and replaced with aftermarket. My car has the OE exhaust from new in perfect condition. Extra concours points for sure!!! I also fixed the windscreen washer system (air pipe to the spare wheel needed attaching!).

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 yearsago

@PCARMARKET could you please post up all the underside photos, the battery tray and the drone shot I submitted. Many thanks. Gary

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 yearsago

@faizulali thank you for your questions.

Yes, I have the complete set of all documents, original service book, window sticker, guarantee from rust proofing, and about 20 receipts from the garage that completed most of the services over the 40 years of the first owners use. I also have the large wad of annual registration dockets.

All the documents support the mileage. I also found and emailed the previous long term owner. We exchanged a dozen or so emails, telling me she never drove the car in the rain, always garaged, and always has the car serviced annually or bi-annually. She loved the car, going through 3 divorces and always keeping the car!

In terms of shipping, yes, very happy to help out. I know and have used a couple of shipping companies. My personal preference is for Reliable Carriers. Door to door and covered. Very good company, never let me down.

I also like using Livingston International for brokerage- sorting out the boarder crossing etc. Really efficient and cheap.

Basically, with just two phone calls I can have the car collected and shipped door to door. Everything sorted. Stress free.

Hope this helps. Do let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to know.

  • faizulali (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

Wow, this looks stunning. Do you have any documents to support the mileage? Lovely clean car. Have not seen one this nice for a while. Are you able to help with export out of Canada?

  • PCARMARKET 3 yearsago

@fastricky The typo has been corrected, thank you for commenting.

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 yearsago

    @jbelcredi hello.

Yes, I understand from the auction house that they will shortly upload a lot of photos of the underside. I don’t have a running video I’m afraid. There is a drone video that will be uploaded.

I can’t do a running video, apologies. I’ve had to pop to the UK for my father’s funeral. Another Covid statistic I’m afraid.

I can assure any bidders that the car runs absolutely perfectly. I changed the gear shift bushes, now the gear shift is 100% smooth and precise. I also freed up a slightly sticking AAV, which sorted the high idle out.

It’s running perfectly, like it just left the factory.

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 yearsago

@fastricky that’s correct. The description of the engine origins is incorrect. Should read 912 E, the one year only 912 in 1976

  • fastricky (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

Description reads "This final model-year 1976 example carries a 2.0L flat-four engine derived from the 911E", clearly that is an error, it should read "912E". This is gorgeous, and should remain as is (don't remove the stickers even tho' they're not my cup of tea either). GLWTA

Might be of interest to Canadian buyers. The car has been accepted to be an entrant at the Cobble Beach Concours competition (pre 1978 Porsche Class) in September.

The car was scrutinized by judges to be allowed to compete. It’s tough to get cars into this competition. I’m pretty sure a new owner would be allowed to compete with this car. My VW bus 1966 finished second in class three years ago. A really great event to be part of.

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @robmsales hello, good afternoon Rob.

I think it would be possible to remove the 914 decals from the doors, with a bit of care and a razor blade. I was tempted to remove, but then chatted with the first owner. They were put on by the supplying dealer as part of the Sebring promotion by Porsche. I decided to leave them in place for this reason, but can also see the appeal of removing them.

This 914 is probably the best concours condition Porsche I’ve ever owned. And as you know, I’ve owned a 3.2 Carrera National winner.

  • TradeClassicsSingh 3 years, 1 monthago

What a car, a very rare thing to find one with original paintwork like this. I've sold a couple of cars for the owner that he had in the UK, very particular about his Porsche collection, as to be expected this is another excellent example. Good luck with the auction!

Thank you seller for the explanation for the dash pad....good decision.

  • harv666 (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

I can definitely vouch for the quality and integrity of the owner and his cars. Top notch collector with some really great taste, and phenomenal knowledge of the cars we love. This car is amazing in real life.

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@richjs43 hello. The dash pad is original. There’s a very slight ‘dent’ on the surface. I think caused by someone in the past pressing too hard on it. It’s slightly deformed the foam backing I think.

I considered replacing with another one. Not too difficult a job. But preferred to leave as is in original condition. That’s probably the one and only thing in the whole car that is not quite 100%

  • richjs43 (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

I looked at your photos after I sent you the last comment...great job.

  • richjs43 (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

Hello seller.......could you please comment on the dash....I can’t tell if some repairs were done to the cover or is it just the lighting . thanks....great looking 914, I did own one (1976) which was actually owned by a Ziebart franchise owner....great that this one was treated, I did several of my own cars, Porsches included (the first being a 1976 Porsche 912E, one of approximately 2000 made by Porsche for the US market- MSRP $12,800).

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@mokrongly thank you for your kind comment. I tend to agree with you. In my hunt for a 914 I must have seen at least 10 914s. All claimed to be in original condition. None of them really measured up to scrutiny. Repainted. Engine out and rebuilt. Carbs replacing the fuel injection.

Many cars simply were not well maintained, being the low cost entry level Porsche. My search led me to this 914, which ticked every box for the collector.

  • mokrongly (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

My compliments on your beautiful car and attention to detail in its presentation. Someone is going to acquire a very special Porsche.

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

I’ve just uploaded quite a few photos I’ve taken if the underside of the car. Since these were taken, I’ve continued to detail everything under the car - but leaving it as original as possible. I’ve left the wax coating in place, and the black Zeibert coating in the wheel wells. I’ve also upload a drone shot of the car taken in the summer.

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @JNasty Hello

The Sebring promotion was a Porsche nod to their success at Sebring with a 914 GT. It was an option for new cars in 1976. The first owner, told me the dealer fitted the Porsche decals as a gift to her - hence nothing on the window sticker. She commissioned the Zeibart rust treatment and the dealer fitted radio cassette. Interesting the radio cost more than the Zeibart!

I have detailed photos of the underside to upload shortly. About 50 photos taken with the car on my four poster lift.

  • JNasty (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

@gturner008 - wow, sweet. What can you tell me about the "Sebring" promotion? And why is the package not on the dealer-add-on receipt/sticker w the radio? Assume they changed for it? Can't find much on the web on it. Some posts say gumballs and side stripes and spoilers? Thanks!

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

I’m very happy to help with shipping. It is really straightforward to ship the car to the US - door to door. Livingston International can easily sort the brokerage, about $350. Shipping to somewhere like Tennessee would be around $1700. Car transport is not an issue between Canada and US. I sold my VW Deluxe bus to a lovely couple in Napa Valley. Really easy and completed in two weeks.

  • gturner008 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

Welcome to the auction of my 914. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. I’ll answer quickly and honestly.

As a mature Porsche owner for 30 years, I looked for the last 15 years to find an immaculate, treasured 914. Then I found this car in Toronto. I’m only selling as I have just bought a 1959 356. My other car is a 1972 ST replica.

I hope you like it as much as I do. Every single thing about this car is original. From paint, to engine, interior and electrics. Mileage is backed up it with detailed documentation, from the 20 or so service records.

The first owner bought the car new in 1976. Kept it to 2015. Only did 800 miles/year. Usual one road trip per year to see family. She didn’t like to drive it in the rain. Always garaged.

The obvious questions with any 914 are usually associated with rust issues in the battery tray and ‘hell hole’. I can assure any bidders that this car is 100% rust free and original. I’ll look to post pictures of these areas. You’ll see no rust at all. Same for longitudinals.

Whoever bids on this car will be buying a really rare 914. Low miles, completely original, in perfect condition. Happy bidding. Any questions, please ask.
