DT: 1977 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 Targa "Turbo Look"

It is our pleasure to offer this incredibly rare and unique 1977 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 Targa “Turbo Look” finished in Light Yellow over a black leatherette interior with pinstriped velour seat inserts. Specially commissioned by the famous German Porsche dealer Glöckler of Frankfurt, this Targa left the factory with some very rare and interesting options including black exterior graphics, Bilstein shock absorbers, anodized black trim, and most notably the early Nr. 451 “Turbo Look” styling package, which predates the more commmonly known M491 package.  This the 110th car out of 646 Carrera 3.0 Targa’s produced for 1977, and more than likely the only one in a widebody "Turbo Look" configuration.  There is also speculation that this is the first-ever Turbo-Look package equipped for a non-turbo 911.  Since the seller’s purchase of the car at auction in Paris in 2017, this example was brought to Spain where it underwent well over $15k worth of refurbishment including all-new gearbox synchronizers, engine sorting, and a full refresh of the brakes and suspension. Currently showing just over 30,600 kilometers (19K-miles) on the odometer, this highly unique and likely one-of-a-kind Carrera 3.0 Targa is being offered for auction by its seller out of Colorado.

This Targa was ordered in Light Yellow (B6) and with factory-applied door panel striping and “911 identifier" hood graphics in black. Other factory specifications include a black Targa top insert, dual exterior mirrors, wheels spacers, and black anodized exterior trim.  Glöckler also selected the special order “Turbo-Look” package consisting of wide Turbo-style front and rear fenders, a lower front air dam, and whale-tail rear spoiler.  This package was inclusive of Turbo-spec 16” Fuchs light-alloy wheels measuring 7” wide in the front and 8” wide in the rear.  Since the seller’s purchase, the lower front valence was professionally refinished, and the original Fuchs wheels were redone in a traditional black finish with silver outer lips.  New tires were installed as well.

Inside, this Targa was appointed from the factory with a black leatherette interior featuring sought-after pinstriped velour seat inserts.  A period Blaupunkt radio is fitted and the seller has upgraded the speakers and installed a Bluetooth receiver for modern convenience.  These recent upgrades are easily removable, and all gauges and accessories are said to be working properly aside from the tachometer.

Offered to the European market only, the Carrera 3.0 is powered by a naturally-aspirated version of the same fuel-injected 3-liter flat-six from the venerable 930 Turbo.  This air-cooled power plant produces up to 200 HP, which is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed 915 manual gearbox.  Since the seller’s acquisition, the engine was thoroughly gone through and sorted, the gearbox was fitted with new synchronizer rings, the brakes were refreshed, and the entire suspension was rebuilt to original specifications.  All mechanical work was performed by a trusted Porsche specialist in Madrid, and oil-fed Carrera chain tensioners were installed under previous ownership.

This sale will include some recent service records, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, official correspondences from Porsche, and a clear Colorado title.  This is an exceedingly rare opportunity to own a Carrera 3.0 Targa with impressive provenance and what is likely a one-of-one facotry configuration.  An absolute automotive treasure, this may very well be the missing piece in a world class Porsche collection.

It has everything I find attractive independently (Targa, wide-body, yellow, loud graphics) and rolled it all into a car that would never be on my top-5 must buy radar....it's gorgeous and congrats to whoever buys.

@atlrvr if you were in the market for this and didn't bid you'd be crazy! I have never seen anything like this and I am a big Porsche nut. Unfortunately, out of my budget.

@MAFlores19 thanks for your interest! car drives like a charm. specially the engine pull and the gearbox is perfect. the 3.0 N/A engine is a purist dream!!! suspension was completely re-done recently, and the car handles quite well, as a targa can. i can also mention there's no presence of annoying noises. It’s a car to be enjoyed inside the showroom and outside on the road!!

  • MAFlores19 (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 4 daysago

@Dicarco Key question: How does it drive? And what can you tell me about the car’s suspension?
    Thanks and good luck!

@MTMark1957 hello. I apologize big time. I tried to get the pictures. It was not possible since the car is back in storage due to weather and no one could access it at this point. I am really sorry. Undercarriage should be just as perfect as anything else you can see on the car.

The duct on the lid is peculiar to a 3.0 Turbo. Nice that it's still intact. They were not made of the best quality material. Much like the cover for the firewall at the front of the car.
    Neat.

  • Nathanbs (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 6 daysago

@Slim_Chance not possible to be 8000 lower when they made approx 1300 total carrera 3.0s in 1977. I think the “1” designated for a targa in 6th position is throwing you off?

There is a car I'm familiar with that sequentially is about 8,000 serial numbers lower.
There are more of these cars but the total numbers are unknown.

The I know is a true factory "Z Order" listed with a Turbo Body and brakes used through '77. It also has Sport Seats with the pinstripe pattern and a period 76-77 whale tale.
The information regarding it's heritage was sourced from the factory and is on the Kardex. It is the real deal purchased by the owner in Germany in 1985 and imported to the USA over 30 years ago.

    GLWA.

@AstroP59 it was working up until last weekend when I took it for a spin in order to get some pictures. I can assure you it would be an easy fix. We just had planned the auction and I didn’t want to postpone and take it to the shop.

  • AstroP59 (registered bidder) 3 weeks, 2 daysago

With all the other work performed why wasn’t the tach refurbished repaired or replaced? do you have a repair cost estimate?
    thanks

@Patsey77 to my knowledge. Only repaint was front bumper. Only because it suffered when the European Plates were removed. Other than that, paint is pristine !
