This 1977 Porsche 911S was purchased new in Northern California and kept indoors as part of the original owner’s collection ever since. It was driven sparingly for several years before eventually undergoing a custom Slant Nose Cabriolet conversion during the early 1980s. All work is said to have been completed by Bob Garretson of Garretson Enterprises including a rebuild of the original magnesium block engine using a 2.9-liter piston and cylinder kit along with twin-plug heads, Weber 46 IDA carburetors, and Electromotive ignition. After sitting for several years, the car underwent a recent engine-out service and reseal along with rebuilds of the carburetors and axles. An incredibly unique air-cooled 911 with unbroken original ownership, this 911S Slant Nose Cabriolet is now being offered for auction out of California.

Between 1981 and 1983, this 911S Coupe was modified with 930 Slant Nose style bodywork including wide steel fenders with straked side air intakes, boxed rocker panels, pop-up headlamps, and a smooth front valence. A black convertible top was also installed in place of the original fixed roof panel, a configuration that was otherwise unavailable on the 911 until the introduction of the 911SC Cabriolet in 1983. The exterior is finished in Grand Prix White, and the seller notes some areas of the paint of been touched up throughout the years, detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The black interior has been customized with a set of Recaro LX bucket seats featuring mesh headrests and multicolor confetti inserts. A drilled aluminum floorboard has been installed in the driver’s footwell along with an anodized black Rennline accelerator pedal. The radio and A/C have been eliminated and an aftermarket shift indicator light has been added above the tachometer, although it is not connected. Some wear is noted on the handbrake lever and an area of upholstery is lifting away from the lower left edge of the glovebox. The hazard lights are intermittent, and the seller notes the left steering column stalk has been replaced.

The engine build was carried out in 2003 by Garret Enterprises using the original 2.7-liter magnesium 7R case. An upgraded 2.9-liter Mahle piston and cylinder kit was installed along with twin-plug heads and an ignition system by Electromotive of Manassas, Virginia. Fueling is handled by six-barrel Weber 46 IDA carburetors with custom-sized jets by GE. Other features include a polished crankshaft, custom D Elgin cams, oversized valve springs, titanium retainers, a 930 Turbo oil pump, a front-mounted oil cooler, SSI heat exchangers, and a sport muffler. A major engine-out service was completed in 2021 by Pasadena Air Cooled Performance including all new seals, belts, hoses, polished rocker arms, rebuilding the axles, and overhauling the carburetors. The seller recommends the tires and front suspension bushings be replaced.

This sale will include a clean title and some documentation.

@2mAn the main and idle jets are quite large it’s definitely set up for high mid to top end she’s very thirsty but I can’t say I mind it especially when she starts to sing at 3800/3700rpm

  • Traderlands (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@2mAn it doesn’t need it but it does like it, I prefer the spicy sauce on all older modified Porsche’s and after doing enough carburetor rebuilds I have nightmares about ethanol gunk and bad fuel call me old fashioned but I opt out of additives as much as possible ,compression on the 93mm Mahle 2.9 kit out of the box is 10.3:1 with a 1mm deck I didn’t get a chance to measure when the reseal was being done but I would say it’s somewhere around there although the lack of base shimming was apparent, so possibly higher

  • 2mAn (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@Traderlands Targa Top would be welcome! Whats the compression ratio? Does it require 100octane or is it just happier with the spicy sauce? Those are quite healthy numbers but I imagine its quite thirsty

  • Traderlands (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@2mAn not entirely sure about the reasons for the cabriolet top but it was done in a clean manner compared to things I’ve seen over the years.

I do have the original target top on hand so if someone wants to return it back to stock you’ll have that option, rear glass, and Targa hoop are still at the property up in Norcal willing to coordinate with a new owner on when I would be able to go pick up the parts

  • Traderlands (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@2mAn @2mAn, it made 300/310 across 5 consecutive runs with an average of 304 on 100 octane

    Electromotive Timing settings:
Initial timing starts at 12 degrees advance with an offset for the secondary plugs and peaks at 24 degrees advance at 3000rpm drops town to 7 degrees at 8000rpm pictures are shown in the gallery (Bobs original settings on the ignition remain unchanged)

When the engine was resealed at Pasadena Air Cooled, the carbs were adjusted for drivability. I would suggest a retune for performance. The 296 cam and valves, coupled with the compression, make the best power with a rich mixture. Since my ownership, I've been running 100 octane avgas with the exception of about 3 fill ups with octane booster and the normal 10% ethanol we see at the pumps in California

I’ll be including in a VP racing square white 5.5 gallon tank with the sale of the car

  • 2mAn (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

Any dyno numbers? Looks like a fun build. Shame about the cabriolet conversion but I understand

  • Traderlands (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@SilverRose I will be including the compressor with the car , all other air conditioning equipment remains present in the stash box and wheel well along with the ac lines in the engine bay , in order to fit the compressor you would need a bracket that would space it out from the Weber carbs (would suggest running a slimmer unit) due to space limitations. When I initially picked up the car it came with ducting for front brake cooling and shrouds for the brake rotors / 3 sets of foglights . The ducting and shrouds are no longer present but will it come with come with those foglight sets all of which are Bosch units

  • SilverRose (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@Traderlands - any of the removed AC stuff come w/ the car? Is there ROOM in the engine bay to re-install w/ the current set-up? Know small vent 911s don't get super cold. Also, don't know if you know, but why no lights or cooling ducts in the front valance? The empty holes seem like an odd choice in an otherwise complete build (know lots of custom work is to taste).

Dear friends and fellow enthusiasts, I welcome you to this auction, where we present to you a veritable treasure - a stunning 911s built by the same creator as the 953 Apple sponsored car and the revered Hawaiian tropic 935 . I am delighted that you have chosen to grace us with your presence and wish to express my gratitude for your interest in this vehicle.

Allow me to extol the virtues of this machine, which I have treated with the utmost care and attention. It is a joy to behold, and an even greater pleasure to drive - a fact that I can assure you through my experience. In the interest of transparency, i have taken pains to ensure that every aspect of maintenance and upkeep has been properly attended to, so that you may enjoy this car to the fullest extent.

For those who may have any questions, I am more than happy to provide additional photographs or information. I will also be posting another video of the car driving today or tomorrow , so that you may get a better sense of its performance. For those who wish to see the car in a more detailed manner, we can arrange for it to be placed on a lift for a basic inspection or a full ppi.

In addition to the original blue and yellow plate, which is visible in the gallery, I am also including a range of new and replaced parts, as well as receipts from the Sierra Madre collection. The winning bidder will also have the rare privilege of receiving a bottle of 1982 Perrier Jouet (must be of legal drinking age) from the wine cellar of the car's first and only owner Carl , This car was a favorite among his collection and one of Bob Garretson's final projects through Garretson Enterprises.
I hope that this has been a satisfactory introduction to this magnificent vehicle and look forward to your inquiries.

    Sincerely
    Erik
