19k-Mile 1977 Porsche 911S Coupe

Finished in Guards Red over a black interior with optional Sport Seats, this 1977 Porsche 911S represents the final year of the 2.7-liter engine. Family-owned since new, the seller reportedly invested over $30k to recondition the car after 24 years of climate-controlled storage. The seller indicated that during its hibernation all fluids were drained, the wheels were removed, and the car was kept on an elevated rack. This 911S is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Washington.

Repainted in its original factory Guards Red color, this Coupe was configured without a sunroof and equipped with a driver’s side mirror, U.S. spec bumperettes, chrome window trim, aluminum rocker moldings, and factory 15” Fuchs wheels dressed in Michelin 195/65 R15 A/S tires. The seller indicates that the passenger door has dings and there are minor paint bubbles on the roof near the windshield. The front windshield seal and rear window seal have also been replaced. Additional images are provided in the gallery.

The black interior features optional Sport Seats with tartan inserts, a three-spoke leather steering wheel, a lockable glovebox, manual crank windows, and an aftermarket radio with door-mounted speakers. The air conditioning unit is currently uninstalled and was reportedly operational when removed.

The air-cooled 2.7-liter flat-six engine was rated at 165 HP, driving the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. The heater box exhaust manifolds have been replaced with headers, and an updated 11-blade fan was installed during the family’s ownership. Professionally maintained by a local Porsche technician, extensive and complete service records are said to be available

The sale will include a clean title, owner's manuals, toolkit, spare tire, car cover, and original parts that were removed and kept in a storage container.

@Tfeinroth - With all due respect, it appears to me that you have two undercarriage pics on display, one from the front and one from the rear. Pic #58 shows the front belly pan of the car, and it does appear to have a sizable indentation on the right side (of the car) of that pan. This was mentioned in a recent post by @oalvarez. Can you take an internal pic of the front trunk (frunk) with the spare wheel removed to show us any internal damage? Pic #59 shows what appears to be some dent damage to the left heat exchanger on the bottom of the engine. Has this been discussed with your tech as to whether it needs replacement? Perhaps other attached components, bolts, and seals might be damaged as well?

You have posted only the first two pages of a four page repair order from 2019. Extensive problems and repairs are documented, including the removal of the thermal reactors, which your earlier comment stated had been removed "early" in this car's life. Still no compression numbers are posted, and there is no comment on whether or not a pop-off valve was installed, and whether later oil-fed Carrera chain tensioners have been installed. You mentioned over $30K in recent repairs, but where is the documentation?

You claim that this car has under 20K miles on it, yet the wear on the steering wheel alone would indicate far more miles than that. Can you provide written documentation to prove that the claimed mileage is accurate? We need more clarification on all these issues.

Finally, how much longer will you car remain for sale in the Deal Tank? Thanks for any response you can provide to all these issues. I keep looking at your car because I live quite near to you, and it would be an easy delivery process.

@oalvarez the pics of the underside of the car are taken from the rear and there are no dents to ant parts of the underbody.

  • oalvarez 2 months, 1 weekago

@Tfeinroth the pic of the underside of the front portion of the car, it appears like it’s (heavily) dented. Is that the case or just an illusion? Thank you,

  • Tfeinroth (seller) 2 months, 1 weekago

@oalvarez @oalvarez, yes based on the mechanic who maintains the car it would pass the emissions test.

  • oalvarez 2 months, 1 weekago

@Tfeinroth Thank you for such a speedy reply. Any thoughts as to whether or not the car has/could/would pass a California smog test?

    Again, thanks in advance.

  • Tfeinroth (seller) 2 months, 1 weekago

@oalvarez , yes the car is still for sale

  • oalvarez 2 months, 1 weekago

Is this car still for sale?

    @wadds1971 @wadds1971,
The deal tank listing has been extended for 2 more weeks effective today. I also responded to your most recent note

  • Tfeinroth (seller) 4 monthsago

    Hello, Wadds1971,
I uploaded 2 under carriage pics. The car has 19,780 miles on it as I try to put on 100-150 miles per month. The repaint was done when the car had 15,500 miles. The thermo reactors were removed and replaced with headers. I have all original parts in a large container. I need to inquire with the mechanic regarding the pop-off valve. The car has never been modified and the tires have plenty of tread left as I only put on about 1200 miles per year. The reason why the paint has a few minor bubbles is because of insufficient prep in the 2 areas.

@Tfeinroth - I was just checking in on the progress of your Deal Tank listing, hoping to see more of the pics you promised, and maybe some answers to more of the questions that I, and others, have posed. But, I didn't find much new. Maybe a few direct questions to answer in the final days of your auction:

    1. Date of repainting, and miles driven since?
    2. Engine data (compression, service records, etc.) have not been posted.
    3. Oil-fed chain tensioners installed, and when?
    4. Pop-off valve installed?
    5. You said the thermal reactors were "replaced", but did you mean to say "removed" altogether?
    6. No undercarriage pics as mentioned.

I've never participated in a "Deal Tank" auction on PCar, and I'm not sure when we know the exact ending time and date. Will this be posted somewhere? You mentioned above that Dec. 2 is the final date, but at what time will no further bids be accepted?

With a Deal Tank auction, is the Seller able to just accept a bid, and end the auction at once, or must it continue to run for the full length of time? Just wondering.

Thanks. As I posted over a month ago, I think your car looks very nice, and it is very close to me, too, so that would be ideal. But, you really haven't answered most of the questions I posed over a month ago, so doing so would help build enthusiasm.

  • Bruce914 (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

Any pics of the door dings? Is the CAT included? Need that for good ol California.

@Tfeinroth so what will it cost me to get this car??!

  • Tfeinroth (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Harrini1 full compression and leak test done back in 2018 when car was in the shop for 6 months getting re-operational for the road

  • Harrini1 (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Harrini1 have you had a compression test done on the engine?

  • Harrini1 (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Tfeinroth it’s a beautiful car- I’m just not sure I’m going to meet your reserve!

  • Tfeinroth (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Harrini1 this is a drivers car. Only has 19,750 original miles, all very clearly documented in her maintenance records. Every old part is in the storage container. Car comes with optional sport seats, which are also original and in perfect shape.

  • Harrini1 (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Tfeinroth oh that’s great news! I’m looking for a car to drive with my daughter- not a collector car. We have a new 911 which she loves- but I want her to experience a classic 911.!

  • Tfeinroth (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Harrini1 the car spent 6 months in the shop being completely updated to be road operational at a cost of 30K+. I currently drive it about 150 miles per month. Only thing it needs is an oil change in 2K miles and needs to be driven.

  • Harrini1 (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Tfeinroth good to know- car looks great but I’m sure it will need plenty done having sat for as long as it has.

  • Tfeinroth (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Harrini1 , rot or rust any where in or underneath. I will take more underbody pics tonight.

  • Harrini1 (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

Any early and/or original documentation would definitely be helpful to bidders...at least to this potential bidder.

  • Tfeinroth (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Derekbou thanks for the clarification. I have a huge container full of every old part, spare part, receipt and service manual so I will look this weekend.

  • Derekbou (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

I believe @area901 was asking about the original window sticker -given single family owner good chance some original paperwork is available which is valuable.

I also have a red ‘77 911S. Great option if you’re looking for a narrow body. Fully galvanized, brake booster, peppy 2.7 with nice low end response in the light body. They’re still under appreciated but some folks are catching on.

  • Tfeinroth (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

I am selling as a private party. There is no dealer invoice

  • area901 5 months, 2 weeksago

Is the dealer's window invoice available?

Thanks for the comments. I just uploaded a few pics of the under carriage. I will upload some pics of the service docs this weekend.

The car has not been modified in any way. It’s completely stock. There are some minor paint bubbles which will post today but no signs of rust.

Being that car has only 19,700 miles on it, the studs are in great shape and have not been replaced. The thermo reactors were replaced early in the car’s life as well as the 11 blade fan added.

  • wadds1971 (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

Modifying my previous comment somewhat, if this car truly only has only 19,700 documented original miles, I doubt seriously that the engine and trans have ever been apart, though updates could have been done. Still, age and inactivity can lead to deterioration of crucial seals and gaskets, so some comment on overall condition is still warranted. Thanks.

  • wadds1971 (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

I would agree with the suggestion made by @Derekbou. This appears to be a very nice 911S, and being in the hands of a single family for its entire life should be a big plus, but storage for 24 consecutive years raises a LOT of questions, too. I could list them all, but the easier approach would be to document the most recent work done on the car since it was brought back into service again, e.g. is the repaint recent, and if so, why are there new rust bubbles and door dings? Or, perhaps the car was repainted before it was put into storage?

I would also suggest quite a few more pics. Full dashboard, all four wheels, undercarriage, BOTH inner door panels, more pics of both seats, etc. Basic condition of engine could be judged with current compression testing. Age of tires, brake and clutch lines, brake pads, fluid leaks? Carrera chain tensioners and pop-off valve installed? Studs replaced if broken? History of engine, trans. rebuilding? The car seems to sit a bit high in the front, or maybe low in the rear in the pics. Has the suspension been modified, or worked on recently? The list is almost endless, but you get the idea. With the cost of parts and labor to work on these old air-cooled 911's being what they are, bidders would like to have a much better idea what they might encounter should they win the car. On the surface, though, this car looks like it may be a gem. I do hope @Tfeinroth, the seller, will be able to provide much more detail over the next few days.

  • Derekbou (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

looks like a nice midyear - seller may benefit by providing photos of paperwork for the 30k of refurbishment
