Up for auction is this 1978 Ford Thunderbird finished in Dark Jade Metallic over a Dark Jade vinyl interior. America’s answer to the European grand touring car, the Thunderbird represented the upscale personal luxury car in Ford’s model line and was produced in various configurations from 1955-1997 and again from 2002-2005. This 7th generation 1978 example has been impeccably well preserved, recently serviced, and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York while showing just over 9k believed-to-be original miles on the odometer.
The 7th generation Thunderbird is characterized by its sharper, squarer bodywork and distinctive wrap-over roofline. This 1978 example comes finished in its original color of Dark Jade Metallic (46) with matching accent stripes, chrome trim, and custom pinstriping. The headlight covers and taillights feature Thunderbird emblems to match the hood ornament. Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery. This example rides on silver factory 15” angular 10-spoke wheels with crested center caps and Hankook Optimo H724 whitewall tires.
Inside, you will find a Dark Jade vinyl interior with matching carpeting, headliner, cloth seat inserts, and woodgrain trim. A period Audiovox 3400 AM/FM radio has been installed along with an RCA Mini Stereo 8-Track player under the dashboard, and an aftermarket Speed Control unit. The original Ford radio will accompany the sale along with the original packaging for the vintage aftermarket upgrades.
This Thunderbird is equipped with a 5.8L 351M V8 carbureted engine rated at 145 HP and 277 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven through a 3-speed FMX automatic transmission paired with a 2.50:1 differential. Annual oil changes are said to have been carried out through the lifetime of the vehicle and the seller reports the spark plugs and ignition wires to have been recently replaced.
This sale will include original sales documentation and literature, the factory Ford radio, and a clean title. A gorgeous representation of the best-selling Thunderbird model of all time, this nicely preserved 1978 example is just waiting to be cherished by a new caretaker.
