Up for auction is this 1978 Porsche 911 SC Coupe finished in the unique combination of Grand Prix White over a Lobster interior.  Originally built with equipment for the German market, this 1978 example was purchased in New England by the current owner 3 years ago after it had been sitting in storage for some time.  Since the owner’s recent purchase, many noteworthy refurbishments and maintenance items have been carried out including the rebuilding of the 5-speed manual gearbox as well as an ignition and fuel system refresh.  Highlighting a rebuilt flat-six engine with upgraded Turbo cylinders and larger pistons, this numbers matching German-spec 1978 example is now being offered in fantastic running order by its seller in North Carolina with approximately 195k kilometers (121k miles) showing on the odometer.

This 911 is said to have been completely refinished in its factory specified color of Grand Prix White at some point during previous ownership.  The paint is noted to be in good overall condition with some chips and minor imperfections.  The seller also indicates that the front left fender is non-original and that both the front and rear bumpers have been refinished in recent years (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  A standard decklid is currently equipped, although the “whale tail” rear spoiler that came on this car has also been retained by the seller.  This 911SC rides on Fuchs wheels which come dressed in healthy General all-season tires.

Inside, this SC features an eye-catching Lobster interior which is said to be in very nice condition with brand new headliner and carpeting installed.  Reported to have been set-up for track events at the time of the seller's purchase, many race-oriented components were removed from the car including a welded-in roll bar and race seats. Updated electric/heated seats from a 1980’s model have been installed along with an aftermarket steering wheel and a Kenwood USB/Bluetooth radio with 4 new speakers.  The air conditioning system has also been completely redone with an updated scroll compressor, Griffith's hoses and front condenser. As a German-market vehicle, this 911 also features a Kilometers per-hour speedometer. All gauges and accessories are said to be fully functional and the seller has offered to include the original seats and steering wheel which are shown in the photo gallery.

This 911SC carries a 3.0 L flat-six engine which is said to have been rebuilt by Musante Motorwerks in Connecticut 15 years ago with upgraded Turbo cylinders and larger pistons.  The rear wheels are driven through a number’s matching 5-speed manual transmission which has been recently rebuilt with new synchros, bearings, a steel reinforcement bearing retainer, clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, rear main seal and a taller 5th gear.  Koni shocks are equipped along with an adjustable front torsion bar, and the seller will also be including a front strut tower brace.  Noteworthy maintenance items carried out under the seller’s ownership include:

  • New Fuel Tank and Fuel Lines
  • CIS Distributor Taken Apart and Cleaned
  • Valve Adjustment
  • New Plugs and Wires
  • New MSD Ignition Box
  • New Alternator
  • New Brake Master Cylinder
  • New Fuel Filter

This SC is reported to drive beautifully and the seller confirms that a fresh oil and filter change will be carried out upon sale.

The sale of this SC will include 2 keys, some service records, the spare tire and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.  The whale tail rear spoiler and original seats can also be included should the winner bidder be prefer.  Do not miss out on this very nicely configured and numbers matching German-market 911SC.

@91179viz The dash is in perfect shape. No cracks etc. where should be photos on the listing. Too late at this point to add any more. Sorry.

  • CVS911SC (seller) 3 years, 6 monthsago

@91179viz as far as I can tell my 78SC was factory equipped with electronic ignition and CIS Fuel injection. In 2018 the ignition system would mysteriously quit on me. I replaced the factory CDI with an MSD Street fire control box and coil.I also replaced the distributor pickup coil, spark plug wires and what is affectionately known as the rotten green wire.

  • 91179viz (registered bidder) 3 years, 6 monthsago

@CVS911SC Thank you. Very comprehensive. Car didn’t have chin spoiler? Ignition system update mentioned. DME box? Or no? 78/79 SCs did not have DME.

  • CVS911SC (seller) 3 years, 6 monthsago

@91179viz I contacted http://www.musantemotorsports.com/about.html but they could not locate any records but he did remember the car and doing motor work on it. Unfortunately no engine work documentation from the previous owner... The transmission work and clutch rep,a cement was performed by me and I have all the receipts. Not aware of any rear fender damage.

  • 91179viz (registered bidder) 3 years, 6 monthsago

Do you have documentation for engine rebuild and trans rebuilds? Right rear top of wheel well damage? No front spoiler?

@Ccoucap Hi, the speedometer is European and as far as I know has not been changed. It reads 195,276 km in picture 33. Roughly translates to 117,165 miles.

  • Ccoucap (registered bidder) 3 years, 6 monthsago

Your description omits mileage on the car, granted, a lot has been done in maintenance but still nice to know actual mileage of the car
    Thanks

I've had the opportunity to drive this car before it was put up for auction. That said, I can attest that the description of the car is accurate. Pictures don't do justice to the lobster interior -it is magnificent. The steering wheel is a nice touch too. The A/C is legit-as cold as my 991.1. Handling is great and the engine is smooth, solid, and responsive. Full disclosure-I'm looking for a newer air cooled so I have no skin in the game here. Just thought some personal comments would be useful.

@V12Stealth I do not recall seeing any but will take a look when I return home. If so, I’ll have Pcarmarket post the photo.

  • V12Stealth (registered bidder) 3 years, 6 monthsago

@CVS911SC Thanks for the prompt reply. Does it have any of the usual "Federal" or EPA labels near the engine bay? Do you think you could upload a photo if there is one?

@V12Stealth the fender was replaced before I acquired the car. No apparent structural damage but I do not know the reason or exactly when it was replaced. There is no emission equipment on the car. No emissions inspection for a 1978 vehicle in North Carolina.

  • V12Stealth (registered bidder) 3 years, 6 monthsago

What was the reason for the fender replacement? And does the car still have all its emission control equipment on it?

  • CVS911SC (seller) 3 years, 6 monthsago

Hi, I'm the seller and will try and answer all questions in a timely manner. Good luck!
