We are pleased to present this stunning 1978 Porsche 911 Turbo finished in the rare combination of Paint to Sample Brocade Red over a Cork leather interior.  Representing the first generation of intercooled 3.3 L Turbo, as well as one of only 461 U.S. spec examples produced the model year, this 1978 930 showcases factory Sport Seats and a number’s matching drivetrain with a factory optioned limited-slip differential.  Having been treated to a full glass-out restoration in 2002 under the care of its original owner at a cost of over $45k, this 930 has been kept in pristine condition with only 15k miles driven since.  As previously listed on PCARMARKET accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity as well as a collection of service records and documentation, this exceptional 1978 example is now being offered by its seller in Oregon.

Under the original owner’s care in 2002, this 930 was treated to a full restoration which included a professional glass-out respray in the factory specified Paint to Sample color of Brocade Red.  Most of the body and window seals were replaced during this time and the seller confirms the paint remains in excellent condition with some minor wear, a few small touch-ups and an imperfection located near the driver’s side taillight (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  This Turbo features widened fenders, a front valance with fog lights, and a distinctive “tea tray” rear spoiler which accommodates the intercooler debuted for the 1978 model year.  H-5 headlights have been added, and factory Fuchs wheels are retained which come dressed in Michelin Pilot Sport AS3 tires from 2016 bearing approximately 700 miles of use.

The Cork leather interior was also refurbished during the time of the restoration with reupholstered factory Sport Seats and a new headliner.  The original manual Sport Seats were swapped out in favor of power-operated factory Sport Seats from a later model 911 under previous ownership. An upgraded Nakamichi stereo was also installed during the restoration in addition to a Diamond Audio amplifier and an integrated K40 radar detector and laser jammer at a cost of $15k.  The air conditioning has been recently refreshed and the seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be in good working order.

Marking the first year of the intercooler 3.3 L motor, this 930 carries its original turbocharged flat-six engine which is rated at 265 HP from the factory.  The rear wheels are driven by way of a rebuilt and number matching 4-speed manual transmission with a factory optioned limited-slip differential.  In 2002 with 113k showing on the odometer, the engine was completely rebuilt during the restoration. According to the seller, approximately 15k miles have been added since.  Performance upgrades include a K27-7200 turbocharger, C-2 cams, GHL headers, and a polished front strut brace. All routine maintenance has been kept up to date with noteworthy recent service items including new OEM vacuum lines and a brake fluid flush as well as a valve adjustment performed within the last 600 miles.  This 930 is reported to be in exemplary running order with a collection of service records and a California smog certificate which was transferrable until October of 2020.

The sale of this Turbo will include 2 keys, 1 valet key, service records, and a clean Oregon title as well as the original books, toolkit, air pump, jack, and spare tire.  This stunning 1978 example offers an incredible opportunity for any air-cooled Porsche enthusiast in search of a classic 911 Turbo.

@rinkerk For some additional reassurance, the car has been started and driven regularly since the rebuild. It's been mostly a weekend and show car in the last 10 years. My dad and I routinely filled it with fresh non-ethanol fuel and used Castrol 20w50 high zinc racing oil - the best oil to minimize wear and increase longevity in these engines.

  • rinkerk (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

Fair enough but the rebuild was almost 20 years ago and the car hasn’t been driven that much since so possible that it’s lost some efficiency due to aging gaskets and seals.

  • JR930 (seller) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@rinkerk I felt no reason to do it. The engine rebuild was done just 15k miles ago, it passes CA smog with flying colors and it idles as smooth as a baby's bottom. All of which is indicative of a very healthy engine.

  • rinkerk (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

Has there been a compression or leak down test done recently?

  • JR930 (seller) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@Bg57gt4 No worries! The PPI is really hard to spot in the gallery. Even I thought it was missing for a moment there! I'm glad to hear the PPI was a lot shorter than you are used to seeing.

  • Bg57gt4 (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@JR930: my apologies, I skimmed right past it. Other PPIs I have seen are several pages long. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

  • JR930 (seller) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@Bg57gt4 The PPI can be found in photo 108, along with a list of repairs that I had the shop perform at that visit. The invoice for additional repairs I had the shop take care of after the PPI are in photo 107.

  • Bg57gt4 (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@JR930, beautiful example. Did you say there are PPI results in the photos? I see smog inspection. GLWS!

  • JR930 (seller) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@gtrmaniac It's the original odometer. The mileage currently shown is since the restoration. It's somewhat routine to reset the clock on a classic when it gets a thorough restoration like this one had, which included everything from an engine & transmission rebuild, full repaint, new leather interior, headliner and a long list of other new parts to bring it back to like-new condition.

  • gtrmaniac (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

hello, Beauty! Can you tell me if the original speedometer miles were rolled back to mileage showing currently or is that another speedo that was put in the car? Just wondering why the discrepancy?
    thanks

With all classic cars, there are a few things that I wanted to share in full disclosure. The heated seats are not functional (though the power adjustments work perfectly), the audio system has a slight buzz when not playing music, there is slight weeping from the oil lines going to the front coolers (no drips or leaks, just a bit of wet rubber at metal connection points), the gas guage is not accurate (goes to top on fill and drops to about half way until empty light goes on). All very minor items, but I wanted to bring these up front in full transparency. Happy bidding and good luck on winning this stunning car!

It is quite interesting the number of 930's that have come available for sale the last few months. This is another fine example sure to bring to dollar!

  • Rich_417 (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

Market seems to be hot on these right now. 30% higher from just a year ago. My favorite year 930. Glws.

  • JR930 (seller) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@jbauto There was a lot of interest here in the last auction, so I thought why not give it another shot in the new year? The pre-sale inspection on this car is in the photo gallery so bidders can have confidence they are getting a 930 they can get in, turn the key and drive. Fresh A/C and not a drip on the floor as you'd expect on a car with only 15k miles on the restoration.

  • jbauto (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

Very nice colors. Beautiful car. So, it didn't sell and now it is up for sale again. Why?

I'm excited to present this pristine red 930, which will be a choice way to rocket yourself off into 2021. I'm the second registered owner. My dad bought it from the original owner, kept it in inventory at his dealership for a few years that specializes in 930s, and then sold it to me in 2015. He knows how to buy the good ones, and we have been knowledgeable caretakers of this example. I recently invested into this car by refitting the engine with original parts so it appears completely stock from above and the back with a stock muffler. I also refitted the air pump to meet California emission requirements. The engine purrs and looks show ready with many new OEM rubber and metal parts that I ordered from Porsche Classic. Happy new year to the fantastic pcarmarket staff and fans!
