This 1978 Porsche 928 features a desirable 5-speed manual transaxle and was acquired by the current owner in 2004. The car has since undergone extensive refurbishments and modifications including a top-end engine rebuild, an upgraded Borla exhaust, a short shifter, a custom sound system, 18” 911 Turbo wheels, and a rear spoiler. Recently serviced with a new timing belt and water pump, this modified 928 is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of San Diego.
This 928 is finished in Black and features a 928 Motorsports fiberglass rear spoiler, polished dual exhaust outlets, and new 18” 911 (996) Turbo wheels with colored Porsche crest center caps. The seller reports Nitto Motivo tires were mounted in 2019. An aftermarket satellite antenna has also been installed along with side-view mirror covers and removable window tints. The seller notes the front and rear bumpers were previously refinished and some imperfections are present throughout the exterior including several paint chips and fading on the left front fender. The black vinyl interior has been customized with an aluminum accelerator pedal, a short shifter, and a new 928 Specialist sport steering wheel along with LED lights, new floor mats, a dashboard mat, and an Alpine stereo. A subwoofer has been mounted in the spare tire compartment and a small crack is noted on the dashboard. Items replaced under the current ownership include the front seat upholstery, center console tray, power window switches, mirror control, left console panel, window regulator, and A/C blower. The seller adds that the odometer functions intermittently, and the car’s true mileage is unknown.
This 928 is equipped with a 4.5-liter V8 engine originally rated at 230 HP and 253 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transaxle. The seller states a top-end engine rebuild and overhaul was completed by a reputable ex-factory mechanic shortly after their purchase in 2004 "including replacements of the lower main bearing, oil pan gasket, catalytic converters, and clutch. Since then, routine maintenance has been observed along with upgrades including a 928 Motorsports aluminum coolant reservoir, a Borla cat-back exhaust system, stainless-steel ball joints and brake lines, a rebuilt/stiffened steering rack, Bilstein shocks, and Eibach springs. The most recent service in February 2022 included a new timing belt, water pump, wiring harness, water pump, and California smog test. The seller adds that a small crack in the chassis was previously repaired, and the car’s alignment was professionally confirmed to be within spec.
The sale will include extensive documentation, owner’s manuals, a car cover, a spare tire, workshop manuals, and a clean title. Additional parts will also accompany the sale including an alternator, door panels, MSD Headers and cross-over pipe, and other spare and original parts.
The seller would like you to know: “This car has been a restoration project since purchased in 2004 and should probably be considered a nearly complete Modified Restoration (Resto-Mod) as a variety of upgrades are beyond the original 1978 setup, options, and original parts. One of a kind! Won't find another one out there for sale like this one. it’s 100% running and drives great. It has been well maintained but I have no time to finish the almost completed restoration of the car.”

@Randolator The additional photo was in response to a previous inquiry to see the weld area done to the left-front support chassis arm. This shows a great welding job that was also confirmed with multiple alignment checks.

@tdskip small crack in the monoquque chassis near rear left. Welded back and only a minor short crack. All covered by insurance at the time as they recognized this as a collector car.
What specifically cracked?
@TTGindustries No there are none but a professional job was done and guided by my expert Porsche mechanic. Alignment was checked twice and the chassis and wheels are stratight with proper camber too.

Just added a couple pics that show the original wheels and tires that also come with the car along with a lot of other original parts and new parts that total to about $6,000 alone that will help anyone that wants to complete the restoration of this unique car.

@1991928gt all added as requested. We have a 91 Turbo-GT too but this car is more like a roadster and the GT is more like a rocket ship. Totally different cars and this one is way fun to drive!!

can you show pictures of the rear leather quarter panels? also a video of a cold start and the guages? and the car running thru all the gears?
@dicksanderson it needs to be recharged so not sure if it does. Never used here in San Diego.
@DPommery paint job, repair crack in dash, rebuild the door panels (car comes with extra door panels and everything needed to do this),, reattach the interior vinyl on left rear hatchback region near rear left window that has come loose, and reupholstered rear seats would be the major tasks. I always wanted to put the big breaks on it too and the air conditioning system may need to be checked too.
@Dmhager I hit a pothole a few years back and this was a minor crack in the monoquque chassis that was Healy-arc welded by experts and then realigned verified. The steering rack has an additional 928 Motorsports stiffening rod added to the steering rack. Rebuilt steering rack added a couple years ago too from 928 International.

can you please explain what was done to stiffen the steering rack? also where was the chassis crack that was repaired and what might have caused it?
I get “to each his own”, but why? This coming from an owner of a bone stock 1979 five speed, sunroof delete 928. I will be interested to see how this does relative to what it might have been if it was original. GLWS

What’s with aluminum foil intake tubes? They are not that expensive from aftermarket vendors. Really detracts from the 928.
