Boasting the second-longest production run of any Mercedes-Benz vehicle, the R107 SL-Class is a testament to the brand’s build quality and advanced engineering of the period. This 1979 example is finished in Astral Silver over blue leather and features a 4-speed manual transmission paired with its 3.5-liter V8 engine. Equipment includes a wood-trimmed interior, a hard top, floor mats, and a rear seat. This European-spec SL was imported from Germany to San Francisco at approximately 45k miles with proper federalization performed in California. This 1979 Mercedes 350SL is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California while showing approximately 54k miles on the odometer.

This SL-Class is said to have been refinished in its factory-specified shade of Astral Silver under previous ownership. It features a removable body-colored hardtop, a blue convertible roof, and chrome trim on the bumpers, mirrors, door handles, front grille, and window moldings. It rides on Steel 14″ wheels with chrome covers and body-color centers which are wrapped in Dunlop CR65 Racing tires which were mounted in 2022. The seller notes that the vehicle was repainted under prior ownership and that the European-spec bumpers and headlights have been retained. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

This R107 features blue leather upholstery with matching carpets, Zebrano wood trim, a black four-spoke steering wheel, floor mats, and rear seats. The seller notes that the leather shows some patina and imperfections and reports all gauges and accessories are working properly.

This 350SL is equipped with a 3.5-liter M116 V8 engine that delivers up to 197 HP and 211 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a 4-speed manual transmission. The SL is equipped with power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes and an independent suspension with double wishbones in front and a diagonal swing axle in the rear. Associated maintenance invoices are provided for reference in the gallery along with Federalization documentation.

This sale will include a clean title, a toolkit, a spare tire, and documentation.

Apologies— didn’t spot the video. I hadn’t seen recent maintenence records in the photos and wasn’t sure if it had been garaged and undeiveable

@palmerd27 this SL has the euro m116 v8 engine with high compression vs the us m117 low compression v8

This is the 350 SL as the designers intended it to look, Minus the USA dictated Huge bumpers for the 5 mph impact rules.
My previously sold 450 SLC of 1979 was similar in color, and required seat support replacement and new fabric to look proper.
I also found that the Euro models had a different engine and many parts differed from USA models.
For example, the starter on my car was on the opposite side from USA versions.
In any event I appreciate the look of the Euro versions, and would like another one

I think I'd leave the leather as is. It's not a new car, but a really nice example of a great model they formerly made. Drive it and enjoy it for what it is. And if you don't live in CA, you can take off all that emissions stuff.

@Doc181015 - This Euro SL Spent its first decade in Germany and is now 44 years old. It was imported to the USA by a woman who resided in San Francisco and it remained in her care when she eventually retired in Arizona. The Mercedes is not restored and has been sympathetically maintained. Any surface rust on undercarriage hardware is a result of the aging process and there is no known or visible rust on the chassis. The interior is all original and showing effects of time and the Arizona sun. It features leather and the Euro only rear jump seat. The SL went through an expensive process to be CARB/BAR approved in California where it has real value which is supported by comprehensive historical documentation dating back to 1991. The Mercedes spent about 4 years in Minnesota where it was not used in inclement weather. The Clutch and AC both performing to spec without issues.

Can you comment as to how long the car was in Minn? The rust on the various bolts, etc. undercarriage indicate that the car was subject to corrosive conditions sometime in its life. The interior is heavily damaged with poor leather, dash top and seemingly newer replaced carpets. Being from the east coast, the California emissions costs detract from the sale of the car....it is a good example of a EURO and should not have been smogged. Do you know what the clutch life is or have any replacement/repair costs? Last, since I have owned a few, the AC system .... does it work well? Thank you.
