Now up for auction is this 1979 Porsche 911 Turbo finished in a rare combination of Petrol Blue Metallic over a Cork leather interior. Having been driven and maintained in California by its current owner of 23 years, this 930 has undergone consistent service including regular fluid changes and valve adjustments. Featuring performance upgrades including SC-spec cams, a 1-bar boost spring and an updated exhaust system, this driver's-grade 1979 example is said to been great running order with some considerable maintenance items performed within the last 5k miles.
This Turbo was completely refinished in its factory specified color of Petrol Blue Metallic upon the seller’s purchase 23 years ago. The finish is said to remain in good condition with some blemishes, cracks and road-going wear (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery). Exterior features include H4 headlights, front and rear spoilers, a factory rear window wiper and original Fuchs wheels which have been polished, powder coated, and custom widened to a 9.5x16” rear fitment. These wheels are currently dressed in Bridgestone Potenza tires installed within the last 5k miles.
The Cork interior is shown to be in good condition for its age with the front seats professionally reupholstered in leather. The original leather dashboard upholstery has been replaced with carpeting and some discoloration is indicated on the driver’s seat piping. Modifications include an aftermarket Sony radio and speakers, an air-fuel gauge and a vintage alarm system which is currently inoperable. Factory options include air conditioning and a power operated sunroof. The seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be working properly.
This 930 is equipped with an air cooled 3.3 L turbocharged flat-six engine which is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission with factory limited slip differential. The engine has been upgraded with a 1-bar wastegate boost spring, an updated 930 exhaust system and 911 SC-spec cams. Bilstein Sport inserts are installed in the front struts and full Bilstein Sport shocks are equipped in the rear. Over the past 100k miles under the seller’s ownership, consistent maintenance is said to have been carried out including oil changes every 5k miles and valve adjustments every 10k miles as well as transmission and brake fluid changes every 15k miles. In the last 5k miles this 930 has received new tires, a new battery, CV joints, a tune-up, an oil change and new brakes. The original heat exchangers will be included with the sale and the seller confirms this 930 to be in excellent running order with a recent leak-down test showing between 7-11% for all 6 cylinders.

@Tahoe58 In 1978 they went to the 3.3 intercooler and big brakes. They drive so much better then the early turbos.

No there isn't one. Ever since I have owned it, I have done all the work. Except one time. Went to Las Vegas, and a rear wheel bearing went out. Had a shop do the work (cant't remember the shop as it was like 22 years ago). When I got back, I had to redo it because they didn't put in a new crush sleeve and the bearing was loose.

On the the AC. It still uses R12. With this Covid the guy that puts it in for me is staying Ariziona so I haven't been able to top it off. I did replace one of the hoses that goes to the front and the dryer. Then we filled it. Work great for a couple of years.
The dash used to be covered in leather. It tore, so I removed it. If you are looking to make the perfect, then the dash should be replaced.
@mcnameem - PS: how "bad" is it under that dash carpet?
@mcnameem - thanks. Since you're a mechanic, and not saying you would do this at all, "just needs more freon" has become a bit of an inside joke on BAT that it's a catch-all for all sorts of actual underlying AC issues. Like your 997, last time I bought a "just needs some freon", I was $4K into the A/C by the time it worked. Given your skills/experience, any way you could top it off, add some dye, poke about, see if we have a leak? I will trust you per the below, thanks!

Couldn't get in to Aase Motors until the 9th, which doesn't do you any good. Most shops that I know are headed out to Spring Mountain this weekend for a POC event. I will also be there as I have a client that I do engineering and mechanical work. We won the championship last year. I asked Jeff what he does in a PPI. He said leak down, which I did. Look for accident damage. Has not been in an accident. Check to see if everything works. AC not too cold. Needs some freon. Headlight squirters don't work. Engine runs solid no abnormal noises. Trans second gear sycro weak. When driven car tracks straight does not pull under braking. No suspension noises or clunks. Engine doesn't smoke under acceleration or knock. Good power. Paint ya we know. Window frames anodize is faded. Interior clean but has wear. No rust on car. I think that some it up.
I know how hard it is to buy a car site unseen. I what you to know exactly what you are getting. I just bought a 997 turbo from an insurance auction and they were not truthful. Said it runs and drives. Ya on 5 cylinders. Brake so rusted. not to say anything about the hail damage. So I know.

@mcnameem - totally gets it needs a paint job, that won't be a "surprise." I'm looking more for confidence on 1) engine health, 2) tranny health 3) any other - if any - five-figure surprises. To some degree, you're getting my paranoia over my '86 gernading engine at 101K. You are sophisticated, you know what it cost me. Paint is easier and I've painted enough cars to know. My question owning would be 1) paint it all at some point or 2) blend out the worst where makes most sense. Or do you think #1 only? If it was the original paint, I'd not touch it, but it's second paint job, right? So the "it's only original once" is long over. Once that's gone, I go for "make it pretty." Original paint I often leave.
The mark on the inside of the sunroof is use. I normally drive with it open. Remember the headliner is 40 years old.
@mcnameem - PPS, was there a sunroof leak? I see some staining?

I will contact Jeff at Aase Motors and set it up. Want to make sure that more than like will say it need a paint job. And it does. I didn't have it painted because it was my badge of courage. I drove the car! Not a garage queen.

The car from Canada did have miles. If I recall he purchased it from the US.
On the exhaust. That is the original muffler. So what I replaced is what comes out of the heads to the turbo. No welding of the turbo flange. I was never a fan of the twin exit pipes.

The upgrades were done shortly after I purchased the car. So like 22 years ago. the exhaust is off like a 1987 turbo. Still factory.
Living in So Cal, have attended the RennSport Reunion the last two times up at Laguna Seca. I thought I was the dude until I saw another turbo with more rocks chips and 225K all original. He was from Canada. We talked how we enjoyed driving these cars. As for a shop close by, Aase Motors in Fullerton. Jeff is one of the best air cooled mechanics around. If I have questions he the one I go to.

@mcnameem - wow, congrats never seen one of these go 185K w/o a rebuild. Since you did all the work, at my expense, are you willing to take it for a PPI? Have a great convenient independent Porsche guy near you? For ease? On a map, closest to you I use would be Porsche Southbay (Porsche Classic certified) or Koko at Sublime in LA. Both about 45 minutes. Happy to hear if you have someone closer. At that mile level w/o receipts, it raises my max bid comfort .
I do not have any receipts. Since I have been a mechanic for the past 40 some on years, what ever the car need I did. This also because I can. I would have rebuilt the engine if it needed it. But it doesn't. I to live in So Cal and can provide the smog. That is why I have the air/fuel gage in the center. I set it to 15 in second gear at 25 mph. Passes every time.

No there has not been a rebuild on the engine or tranny. The 2nd gear syncro has a little wear to it. If you shift fast you will feel it. Normal shifting is just fine. I have always used Swepco gear oil and change it every 15K. Using good quality fluids and driving it correctly prolongs the life. Same for the engine. Using Brad Penn oil which has a high about of zinc that most oils now a days do not have. Changed every 5K. Not getting on the boost until engine is to operating temp. Let turbo cool off if driven hard. One big thing, update the exhaust from the 1979 system. Those would cook the engine. So ya, could see how some engines would need rebuilding earlier. These driving practices and maintenance is how you make car go many miles.
@mcnameem - do you have all receipts for your 23 years and any prior?
@mcnameem - 1) engine rebuild in your 100K? Tranny? I've never seen a 930 go 185K miles w/ no rebuild. Mine blew up at 101K. Usually 80K to 120K is the interval. 2) Will you deliver it SMOG passed? I live in LA. 3) any mechanical or accessory needs/issues at all, from AC blows cold to anything else?
