1979 Porsche 930 Turbo Coupe

Up for auction is this 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo Coupe.  The 930 Turbo was introduced as Porsche's iconic top-tier sports car that eventually formed the basis for the 935 race car, allowing it to win a succession of outright victories through 1984.  Needless to say, the 930 holds a very special place in Porsche history.  Being 1 of only 806 examples produced in 1979, this 930 Turbo offers an excellent opportunity for the air-cooled enthusiast.

The Metallic Black paint is stated to be in excellent condition with slight wear including rock chips to the front end.  Noted, is a minor respray on the drivers side that is said to be due to cosmetic reasons.  Overall, the car presents itself as a very solid example according to the seller.  A few noteworthy exterior features are the iconic Turbo whale tail spoiler, factory fog lights, exterior color-matched rear reflector panel, and original chrome Fuchs wheels that wear a set of Pirelli tires.

The original black leather interior is also stated to be in excellent condition with well-below normal wear.  The factory sport seats are completely intact, showing very little wear on the bolsters.  Interior features include a 917 style shift knob, factory sunroof, Kenwood graphic equalizer, and an aftermarket Alpine head unit.  All electronics are stated to work as they should.

The seller states that the odometer was replaced at 26k miles 1986.  In 1988, the next owner purchased it with a replaced odometer reading 4,300 miles.  The seller estimates 50,000 total miles according to maintenance records, documentation, and evaluating the extremely original and excellent condition of the interior and overall presence of the car.

This 930 Turbo is powered by its original 3.3L flat-six cylinder engine which produces approximately 265HP at 5500 RPM.  Adding to the performance of this Turbo is a dual exhaust system, K27 Turbo, Andial intercooler, and a freshly rebuilt transmission.  Bringing this car to top level driving condition, the seller states that a handful of service items were recently addressed including:

  • Replaced all necessary oil lines
  • New motor mounts
  • New sound pad
  • New engine compartment seal
  • Valve adjustment
  • Replaced first and second gear synchros and gear teeth
  • Replaced A/C receiver drier and expansion tank
  • Performed A/C service
  • Replaced oil tank sending unit
  • New brake pads
  • Replaced engine oil and filters
  • Replaced transmission fluid

The sale will include original books, tools, service records, and both keys.

@Thommo the Becker key pad is an old school alarm system. This was a common dealer installed option. The K27 turbo was installed by the second owner, who we spoke to and he said when he first purchased the car in1986 he had it sent to a Porsche performance shop in Long Beach (didn’t remember the name) and that is where the K27 turbo was first installed with the intercooler and exhaust. Not sure if the turbo has been replaced or rebuilt since then but it seems to be working well.

What is that numbered keypad (with Becker on it) on the dash for? Some sort of aftermarket alarm? Any idea when the K27 turbo was installed? Not the original unit, correct?

@JNasty we have the stamped maintenance log book that shows mileage. I do not have an actual maintenance record of the swapped odometer. Andial did not do the work it was a Porsche performance shop in LA area. We do not have any of the old part that we’re changed out . The car can be made to pass smog in California but as of right now, like any of the other early turbo cars the original exhaust was swapped and will not pass smog the way it is.

@seller - few questions please 1) what do you have for service records? That tie to milage /ODO swap and the mods specifically (eg: did Andial do the work)? 2) have any old parts? ODO and engine parts? 3) will the car come to a CA seller w/ SMOG pass?

    Hi
Just an FYI, they made 1200 1979 930's
    I own # 1189
I'm not sure where these numbers keep coming from, I saw another 1979 in Hemmings saying they only built 600 ish
    Great car and good luck
