We are pleased to offer this 1980 Mercedes-Benz W116 300SD finished in Manganese Brown Metallic (480) over a Bamboo MB-Tex interior. Introduced in May of 1978 and offered exclusively to the North American market, the W116 300SD was the first diesel powered version of the flagship Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan. Offering luxurious accommodations and excellent fuel efficiency from its OM617 turbodiesel engine, the 300SD was one of Mercedes' best-selling models with many examples accumulating high mileage throughout their lifetime on the road. A rare exception, this final-year 1980 example remains beautifully preserved having been tucked away in storage for over 25 years. It was purchased new from Lakeview Mercedes-Benz of Rockville Centre and was recently acquired by the seller from its original owner. Completely detailed and freshly serviced, this time capsule W116 300SD is now being offered for auction in outstanding original condition by its seller out of New York while showing just over 25k miles on the odometer.
The exterior is finished in Manganese Brown Metallic and sports chrome moldings, U.S.-specification bumpers, a passenger-side mirror, and custom gold pinstriping. The paint, brightwork, and rubber seals are all described to have been exceptionally well preserved. Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery. The factory 14” Bundt wheels have been preserved in as-new condition while retaining their original tires as seen in the photos. The seller acquired an additional set of wheels just after the photos were taken, which have since been professionally refinished and dressed in a set of new Pirelli tires so that the car can be driven safely by its new owner. The cabin comes trimmed in Bamboo MB-Tex upholstery with brown carpets and wood veneers accenting the dashboard and center stack. Factory equipment includes central locking, automatic climate control, power windows, a sliding sunroof, heat-insulated glass, a heated rear window, cruise control, and a Becker Mexico cassette stereo.
The 3.0L OM617 turbodiesel inline-five engine delivers an output of up to 110 HP and 160 lb.-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission. Since recently emerging from storage, this W116 has been treated to a full service including all new fluids, filters, belts, and glow plugs.
This sale will include all original owner’s manuals, a set of three keys, the original window sticker, EPA sticker, the original purchase invoice, data plaque, toolkit, first aid kit, and a set of new European headlights. An incredibly rare find, this low-mileage investment-grade 300SD presents an opportunity that is not to be missed.

@pcar169 confirmed the noise you heard in the video was a wheel weight from recently having the new tires mounted. It has been addressed. Good luck if you are bidding!

@dwmartine Hello, I did a follow up and everything is indeed working with exception of the clock. All gauges are operating properly, radio works exceptionally well, all windows, sunroof, antenna, lights etc are operating as they should. Hope this helps.

@pcar169 anything is possible. The brakes are original, perhaps one of the calipers needs more exercising. Please bear in mind this car was stored for quite some time. Whatever it is I’m happy to have a dress before the new owner takes possession. Expecting rain here in the morning but I can assure you if there is an issue it will be addressed
@11JM It sounded like metal on metal like something in the brakes or suspension.
@pcar169 hi. I believe it is from the tires that were just installed that day. Perhaps the label on the tread or something. I can assure you it runs and drives A+

@dwmartine Hi and thank you for the interest. Radio works (surprisingly well for that era). The original A/C compressor is present and the A/C does work. I will confirm about the clock but I do believe it is in working order.

I owned this exact spec car minus the sunroof, manganese metallic and bamboo interior, even with the same build date, from 2013-2014. It was great as a beater and super reliable, albeit with 10x the mileage. The future owner ought to know that some will be jealous as rust claimed mine.

@JBQuick Hello. To clarify, this interior is 100% original as it left the factory and was never redone, as is the rest of the car. This is 100% a time capsule, not a restored car. Hope this helps.
