Up for auction is this 1980 Porsche 911SC Targa finished in Guards Red over a black interior. This 1980 example was acquired by the seller approximately six years ago after it had been discovered tucked away in a garage. It was subsequently treated to a bare-metal glass-out respray in its factory original color along with a complete top-end engine rebuild, transmission rebuild, a restored Targa top, new interior upholstery, and more. Showing just over 77k miles showing on the odometer, this nicely sorted Targa is being offered for auction by its seller out of New Jersey.
This 911SC comes finished in the traditional Guards Red with a removable black Targa top, front spoiler, and rectangular front fog lights. Within the last six years, this 911SC has been stripped to bare metal and refinished in its original color using high-quality Glasurit paint by specialists at RSR Autobody of Wyckoff, New Jersey. The Targa top was also restored by Dan Petchal of Southern New Jersey. This 1980 example rides on factory Fuchs wheels dressed in General G-Max tires.
Inside, the black interior has been fitted with all new carpeting and upholstery for the dashboard and seats by Classic 9 of Michigan. All gauges and accessories are said to remain fully functional including the original Blaupunkt radio.
Power comes from an air-cooled 3.0L flat-six engine rated at 180 HP and 175 lb.-ft of torque stock. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed 915 manual gearbox. A top-end engine and transmission rebuild were carried out by a factory-trained Porsche mechanic along with an overhaul of the braking system by RennSmith of Dover, New Jersey. A new factory-spec reproduction gas tank and muffler have been fitted as well.
This sale will include a spare tire and a clean title. For any enthusiast in search of a classic air-cooled Targa, this thoroughly refurbished 911SC is not to be overlooked.

@rhmoritz Thank you for the comment. I really love working on and owning these car and am not interested in deceiving anyone or hiding anything- simply not worth any amount of money to me. I have receipts from RSR and for all the parts bought for the engine and trans and can put the new owner in touch with the mechanic and well as the owner/painter at RSR.

@AK9eleven Thank you for the interest. 1980 predates Carfax so no history,when I personally took the car down to bare metal there there was an index size area on rear driver rear fender that obviously had some minor work done but zero indication of a collision.
@rhmoritz Engine has hydraulic tensioners, pop off valve was done and all headstuds were replaced when engine was out- really the only issues to make these 3.0 engines bullet proof.
Any accident history ?
MADC, can you confirm if the engine has been upgraded to a hydraulic cam-chain tensioner?
Any issues with the airbox blow-off valve? Recent valve adjustment?

@Chupee Thank you again for the question. If you're referring to correcting the Air Conditioning, both condenser and compressor would have to be reinstalled, system pressurized and tested for leaks and then refilled with coolant. I have honestly never had it done and usually remove the systems, but my guess is a shop would charge in the 6-8 hour range to install and troubleshoot so my guess is in the range of $5-600?

@rhmoritz Thank you for the interest. The rebuild was done by a gentleman who was the head mechanic at the largest Porsche dealer in Bergen County NJ for 20 yrs. The entire motor was inspected and tested before being put back in the car and has been driven approximately 2500-3000 mile flawlessly since. I can try and get a leakdown test done before the end of the auction but that will be difficult. I would honestly and confidently get in the car and drive to California... weather permitting :).

@BarryJWilliamsSr. Thank you for the interest, Car does not have the AC compressor or rear condenser currently installed but the parts come with the sale of the car. The heat and all fans are in working order.

@Chupee Thank you for the interest. I've just uploaded a few undercarriage pictures, 2 pictures when the car was in bare metal, a 3 pictures (the only indoors) that were taken when I first bought the car 6 years ago. Hope this helps, any other questions, let me know.

@mhall527 Good question, Yes, a compressor and rear condenser will be included in the sale- obviously not hooked up and functional. AC lines were left in place during the restoration work done.

@rhmoritz My apologies- I didn't answer your other questions- the car sits slightly lower than US stock spec, but otherwise was kept as original and stock as possible.
@rhmoritz Thank you for the interest, I will try and get some pictures added this weekend, car was in good shape when I bought it just tired, faded with 1 small rust area. I have a good relationship with an awesome local shop (RSR Motors) so when I decided to paint, I disassembled and sanded all the panels down. RSR did any bodywork, paint and reassembly with complete new gaskets. We (retired mechanic and I) found 3 broken head studs so I made the decision to split the motor which led down the rabbit hole of pretty much a complete rebuild.
The car runs great, and is really dry without any active leaks.
@Arrow Hello Arrow, I will add the few pictures I found when the car was down to bare metal- most of the sanding was done by me so I can assure you every panel went down to bare. I also found pictures when I first bought the car and it was in waaay better shape than I remember! The only rust (and what mostly prompted the repaint) was a small area by the lower drivers side windshield. The rest of the paint was in good shape just very tired and faded.
MADC, has the car been lowered? Enhancements, modifications ? Any oil leaks or seeping of fluids? Any pre-restoration photos?
