The Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup, also known as the Volkswagen Caddy in markets outside North America, is based on the first-generation Volkswagen Rabbit (Golf Mk1), designed as a practical, lightweight vehicle combining the economy of a small car with the utility of a pickup truck. Powered by a 2.0-liter engine paired with 5-speed manual transmission, this 1981 example is refinished in white over a black interior. It features plaid bucket seats and aftermarket enhancements such as a replacement front fascia with European headlights and grills, body kit and fender flares, 15” wheels, a Sparco steering wheel, and a head unit with speakers. Showing just over 108k miles on the odometer, this RS5 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

The Rabbit Pickup carries over the distinctive styling of its hatchback counterpart, showcasing squared-off body lines, similar headlights, and a narrow grille. This example is refinished in white and features Rabbit Cabriolet-sourced front end, European-market headlamps and grille, and an aftermarket body kit with extended side skirts and body-color fender flares. It has dual side mirrors, vent windows, and a 6-foot-long bed with a fold-down tailgate. It rides on 15” aftermarket wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich tires. The seller notes that the paint could benefit from refinishing, and there are some issues with the fitment of the body kit, detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The interior features plaid bucket seats, a black vinyl dashboard, and door inserts. Equipment includes crank windows, a heater with a defroster, an aftermarket Sparco steering wheel, a speaker sound system, and a head unit with Apple CarPlay connectivity. The seller reports the door panels may require new clips, and the temperature gauge is currently non-functional. All other gauges and electronics are reported to be in proper working order with no warning lights illuminated.

Power comes from a replacement 2.0-liter inline-four engine equipped with a pair of Weber 40 carburetors and replacement oil cooler. The front wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transmission, and the truck is fitted with aftermarket coilover suspension for improved handling. It also has power-assisted disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear. The seller notes that an oil change and coolant flush were completed approximately one month ago.

This sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Good work truck that can also go to a cars and coffee best of both worlds.”

@bigvitty4u Hello! the swap was done early this year around february. We did do a leak down test before we put the motor into the car, unfortunately no pictures were taken, but the engine is a very healthy high revving one.

Love this truck! Can I ask where these photos were taken? My kids love watching airplanes and a spot this close would be awesome for them to see!

@SoCal4me She is still registered as a diesel! so no need for smog.

  • SoCal4me (registered bidder) 3 weeks, 4 daysago

BTW, I forgot to add...the truck looks great and if I were not already in love with my '94 Toyota pickup (and have too many cars/trucks), I could be serious about it. GLWTA!

Just for clarity...Were these Caddy's all diesel? This has been converted to a gasoline engine. In California diesels are not required to go thru smog testing and inspection. So the gasoline engine is the way to essentially bypass California smog requirements. Or is there some sort of CARB BAR sticker that provides approval for the conversion?
