Up for auction is this 1983 Porsche 944 Coupe finished in Guards Red over a black interior. Marking the inaugural U.S. model year for Porsche's iconic transaxle sports car, this 1983 944 was acquired from the original owner's estate about three years and has since undergone major service including a new fuel pump and fuel lines, new brakes, tires, temperature sensor and more. Equipped with factory Sport Seats and vintage BBS wheels, this 944 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York showing just over 40k miles on the odometer.

This 944 comes finished in traditional Guards Red and features distinctive pop-up headlights, integrated front fog lights, a black polyurethane spoiler surrounding the glass rear hatch, and vintage 16” BBS wheels with black-painted centers and polished barrels. New Hankook tires have been installed under the current ownership within the last 500 miles and the removable sunroof panel is said to have been previously refinished, additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The black leatherette interior comes fitted with deeply bolstered Sport Seats and features power windows, mirrors, and an original Blaupunkt radio. Signs of wear are present throughout the cabin including damages and tears to the front seat upholstery and cracks on the dashboard, which are can be seen beneath the removable softcover. The front seat mechanicals, air conditioning, and radio are currently inoperable, although the heat is said to be functioning properly. Intermittent issues are also noted with the temperature gauges.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 2.5 L inline 4-cylinder engine capable of sending as much as 150 HP and 142 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle. Standard features include four-wheel independent suspension and power-assisted ventilated disc brakes. Service carried out within the last three years includes cleaning of the fuel injectors, reprogramming of the computer module, and replacements of the fuel pump, fuel lines, brake lines, rotors, pads, thermostats, temperature sensor, and coolant. The seller notes the suspension components are worn and the fan switch/relay may be in need of replacement.  A new timing belt, low-temp thermostat, and water pump are said to accompany the sale.

This sale will include a clean title. This sparingly driven 944 makes an excellent driver's car or restoration project, do not let this opportunity pass you by.

    @AtLast thanks for your question:

The car was indoors for years. It’s not perfect, but a 7/10 in body paint. It’s all original except for the roof panel.

The car was purchased as my 3rd Porsche 944 from the original owner. I picked up as an additional car in case my then 84 Porsche needed spare parts.

As this was was in better condition, I kept it and sold the 84.

Since owning this car, it’s been garage kept until recently only because of storage. I have 5 other cars. It’s always covered when out side and the integrity or the body/paint will confirm.

Good luck and let me know it you have any questions

@PinotDino I can post a cold start video. The car runs, drives, shifts and performs very well. The issues with the vehicle were listed. I may need either a fan switch or fan rely.

Any chance for a cold start/drive video? Still confused.. does it start? drive? shift correctly? Thanks.

This should be a very early 944, it still has the 'snorkel' distributor cap and the bleed screw integrated into the radiator hose, both of those are very rare as they often get replaced - and Porsche had replaced them very early in the 1983 944 build cycle. It also has the left over hood prop rod spot on the fender (Porsche stopped with these in the mid 83 model year). I bet the build tag would put the build date in Winter of 82 into maybe early spring of 82.

Sport Seats are a nice addition to the car, are they original?

I don't know if you have enough time, but if you could snap a photo of the build/option tag (in the trunk by the spare tire) and the build/VIN tag under the hood (on the left side, close to the windshield that may help some of the potential buyers.

@pbenjam2 Any vids with engine on? Agree with other commenters, looks pretty rundown interior wise for 40K mile car

  • Mrosilio (registered bidder) 2 years, 2 monthsago

Definitely doesn't look like a 40k mile interior.
Any service records available to see who performed any past work?

    Thanks

Was the timing belt replaced when this car was serviced? Your comment seems to suggest that you are just including the part with the sale. Cheap part, very expensive to have installed. As most 994 owners know, this is one of the most important service items on the car due to the catastrophic damage that happens if the belt fails. With the older cars time not mileage is used to time changes. Usually accepted is every three to five years. If the belt hasn't been changed, I wouldn't even drive the car before this service is done. It would be a time bomb!

Do you have any records other than carfax to verify the mileage? The odometers on these cars all fail due to age. The plastic gear turns to sugar and quits working. Carfax shows a gap between 1985 and 1998. This car could easily have reset a time or two in 13 years. The condition of the interior especially, does not suggest that this is an original 40k mile car.

How was this stored all these years; how did you acquire it? Was it sitting in a field and cleaned really well for the auction?

  • pbenjam2 (seller) 2 years, 2 monthsago

@Poormans_944 @Pormans_944 the odometer has never been tampered with. See verified Car Fax report to confirm.

  • Poormans_944 (registered bidder) 2 years, 2 monthsago

How many times has the odometer gone around reseting itself back to 00000? and what documents do you have verifying the millage?
