Improving upon the original 924 front-engine sports car design, the Porsche 944 was introduced in Europe for the 1982 model year featuring improved suspension, brakes, and a new inline four-cylinder engine. This 1983 example is one of the earliest to have been sold in the United States and comes finished in Guards Red over a Black and Grey/Beige Berber cloth interior. It had been driven very sparingly by its prior owner and was treated to extensive recent service under the seller’s care including a new clutch, ball joints, battery, motor mounts, and more. Previously listed on PCARMARKET, this 944 is now being offered for auction having logged just over 32k miles in the nearly four decades since it left the factory.

This 944 comes finished in traditional Guards Red paint and features distinctive pop-up headlights, integrated front fog lights, and a black polyurethane spoiler surrounding the glass rear hatch. Refurbishment completed in the last year by the current owner includes the replacement of the rear hatch struts, fog lights, and radio antenna. The factory 15” Fuchs alloy wheels come dressed in BF Goodrich tires. The seller notes that the exterior remains in very good condition and that the car placed 2nd in a recent local car show. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin is upholstered in black vinyl with grey/beige Berber fabric seating surfaces. Factory equipment includes an optional air-conditioning system, power windows, a sunroof, and an analog clock. An aftermarket Kenwood head unit has been installed and paired with a trunk-mounted Kicker subwoofer. The footwells are lined with red carpet mats and a protective cover has been placed over the steering wheel. Recent maintenance includes the replacement of the rearview mirror, driver’s side window lock, and window regulator.

A naturally aspirated 2.5L inline-four engine is paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle delivering up to 150 HP and 142 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels. Standard features include four-wheel independent suspension, power-assisted rack and pinion steering, and power-assisted ventilated disc brakes. Service completed in the last year includes replacement of the clutch, master cylinder, brakes, front ball joints, engine mount, battery, tie rods, spark plugs, auxiliary fan switch, and an oil change.

This sale will include a clean title.

Back too late. Miami, I think you got a very good deal.

While maybe not the P of so manys desire, (and my avoidance of red, nor desire for another this genre), certainly seems like a nice car, true to form.

Also seems that someone may be getting a true value!

  • NoMoNaples (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@Rcrossman I agree it looks fantastic. And it seemed to drive very well. I think its value was really hurt at some point in the past when they 'exempted' the odometer reading on the title.

The ironic thing is that I own 1984 and 1985 Porsche 928s and the odometer on the 1984 is TMU and the 1985 shows less than 90k but I think that is suspect. These mechanical odometers were crap. Big problem with Porsches of the era.

I love it and the Mercedes auction I was in just ended and didn't reach the reserve. Now I can revisit this one. Definitely don't want TWO cars today!

  • Rcrossman (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@NoMoNaples You couldn't possibly put 100K on this car and the enterior shows almost 0 wear. Impossible. There would have to be some slight fabric wear but nthere isn't ANY. Cloth is perfect.

  • NoMoNaples (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@Rcrossman I think it looks great! But I don't think it sat for 11 1/2 years in St. Louis without being driven at all. And the title shows "exempt" which means legally it's TMU.

  • Rcrossman (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@NoMoNaples No way this is over 100K miles. I could imagine maybe 60K but the car everywhere just doesn't have 100K look. My under car pics are bad because I'm an old guy at 71years and I just can't get down low enough any more. But I assure you this car is no way 100K car.

  • NoMoNaples (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

First day back in the office. Busy with meetings. I need to decide if I want to continue bidding higher if the mileage really isn't 32k. That 11 year gap on the Carfax makes perfect sense for 100k of miles.

So we are really talking about a 132k mile car. On the other hand, it is VERY clean and looks well maintained.

@TCMiami305 I am off to get a haircut. Don't read too much into my absence from bidding for an hour. ;)

  • NoMoNaples (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@Rcrossman Ouch! Not good. True mileage unknown.

The car looks excellent and seems to drive smoothly.

Thank you for clearing that up.

  • NoMoNaples (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@Rcrossman does the title say 32k miles or TMU? Earlier auction said TMU but this one doesn't say that. Makes a big difference.

    Thank you.

  • NoMoNaples (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@NoMoNaples Exempt from odometer reading in 08 and 12. It could have been rolled over during those 11 years. Earlier auction DID say TMU (true mileage unknown.)

  • NoMoNaples (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

2,800 miles during 11 1/2 years when it was in the St. Louis area. That dude must have been in prison for a dime (10 years) for that to make sense. ;)

  • NoMoNaples (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

My wife's favorite colors are red and black and we are rolling north on I-75 with our earthly possessions in two weeks with two moving trucks. One will be towing my 1985 928. I suppose we can add a trailer to the other one for this car.

It's a shame this isn't on Bring A Trailer because we would literally be doing that!

  • NoMoNaples (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

On December 5th, a high bid of $12k didn't win the election but you were willing to sell for $16k fixed price. Tells me that a bid in the range of $15k - $16k is probably what it's going to take. That seems very fair. It looks great!

    GLWTA!

  • NoMoNaples (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

Looks like it lived in the St. Louis area for much of its early life. Odd that it had Illinois registration but got serviced in Creve Coeur and Wentzville. It's a shame it's not there because it would be closer to home.

Where did you have it when Hurricane Ian rolled through? Our MB E300 got totaled and we were in Naples.

@Rcrossman I just uploaded pictures of my receipts for 99% of work done. I did some minor things like replace lightbulbs etc. Hope this answers all questions about care. Car is in really good condition. I can't think of anything that needs to be addressed that hasn't been taken care of. Whon ever gets this car is going to be a winner in more ways than one.

@EQM AC excellent and super cold. Heater works too.

  • EQM (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@Rcrossman One other question, has the ac system been serviced and does the ac blow cold air?

  • Keven1031 (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@EQM I had the same question…glad you confirmed that wasn’t paint on the Mass Sensor. Most likely then, it was (powder) residue from waxing.

@EQM New clutch about 100 miles ago.

  • EQM (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@Rcrossman That's good it isn't paint. What about the clutch, has it been replaced and if so, how many miles ago?

  • Rcrossman (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@EQM I really don't know what it was but thank for noticing it. I washed it off with windex. Wasn't paint for sure. Thanks again. Good eye.

  • EQM (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

Is that overspray of paint in the engine compartment on the air box, the bracket , air mass sensor and hose? Also, has the clutch ever been replaced? Thanks!
