Up for auction is this 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa finished in Guards Red over a black interior.  This Rest of World (RoW) market example was imported to the United States in 1986 and acquired by the current owner in 2016, having sat idle in a garage in New York for over 17 years.  It was subsequently refurbished with an overhaul of the brakes, new shocks, ignition components, shifter rod bushings, refinished Fuchs wheels, a rebuilt alternator, and a new Targa top.  Well sorted and with approximately 64k miles showing on the odometer, this classic air-cooled Targa is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Texas.

This 911 comes finished in Guards Red and features front and rear spoilers, black stone guards, and a removable Targa top as well as side marker lights and slim bumperettes unique to European market and RoW cars.  The seller notes the lower front and rear valences have been refinished along with the rear bumper.  The Targa top was also replaced by the current owner along with the installation of upgraded H4 headlights. Clear paint protection film is applied over the front bumper and lower valence, and the seller notes an imperfection in the paint near the left-side headlight washer.  A small area of rust is also indicated on the right side of the body beneath the torsion bar, additional images are provided in the gallery along with a full CARFAX report.  The brake calipers have been painted yellow and the 16” Fuchs wheels have been refinished with black painted centers, colored crests, and polished outer lips.  The car rides on a set of BF Goodrich tires.

The black interior has been fitted with custom carpet mats, crested door handles, stainless steel sill guards, upgraded speakers, and a Sony stereo.  The seller reports intermittent issues with the tachometer after having it repaired and confirms all other gauges and accessories to be working properly.

This 1985 Carrera is equipped with an air-cooled 3.2L flat-six engine that produces up to 231 HP in RoW configuration, driving the rear wheels through a 5-speed 915 manual transmission.  After taking delivery of the car in 2016, the seller performed extensive service including replacement of the brake pads, rotors, calipers, and shock absorbers as well as the bushings in the shifter rod and sway bar.  The alternator was also rebuilt during this time and the ignition system was overhauled with a new distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, and wires.

A salvage title was issued by the state of Connecticut in 1989 for reasons unknown to the seller. For any air-cooled enthusiast looking to own a classic 911 Targa, this RoW 1985 example makes an excellent choice.

@trv993 Do some states mark recovered, stolen, car, titles as "Salvage" ?

  • Brecktex 2 years, 3 monthsago

@buyer-seller @buyer-seller: Your Targa with a sliding top must be a 1996 993 series Targa, not a 1986 as you wrote. As trv993 (the seller) wrote earlier, this car has a folding Targa top (as was the case from around 1967-68 to the 993 series).

@buyer-seller The salvage title Came out of Connecticut have paperwork from the DMV from Connecticut but that car has never been registered in the state of Connecticut always a New York registered car not sure why the salvage title Connecticut would not re-search for previous owner if you look at Carfax there’s no accidents or anything On that car

Abuong01 I too have read quite a few articles that state caveat emptor/run, but what is the fun in that! Life is full of risks.

  • buyer-seller (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

Do you have a Carfax on the car? Any info on its provenance? Have bearings and/or seals been replaced? Condition of tires, brand, wear, age, model?

  • Abuong01 (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

Recently read and article about buying "branded" title cars. The long and short was if you are flipping it then it is not worth the risk, if you are buying to hold and enjoy (and the car gets a clean PPI) then 100% charge ahead and get the car of your dreams if the price is what you can afford to spend.
