A factory-built race car from Porsche’s Weissach motorsports department, the Porsche 944 Turbo Cup was built to compete in the brand’s first single-model racing series. Compared to the standard road-going 944 Turbo model, the Cup version weighs approximately 600 lbs. less and features a K26-6 turbocharger, a magnesium intake manifold, a reinforced transaxle, adjustable ABS, and a stiffer suspension. This example competed at the first 944 Turbo Cup race at the Nürburgring on April 26th, 1986, piloted by Annette Meeuvissen, the only full-time female participant in the series. After the first season of racing, it was road-registered in Belgium and driven approximately 87k miles before being imported to the U.S. in 2023. Benefitting from recent rebuilds of the engine, transmission, suspension, and braking system, this authentic 944 Turbo Cup race car is being offered for auction out of North Carolina.

This 944 is finished in Guards Red and wears a #36 Porsche factory press livery. The Turbo Cup model features seam welding reinforcements throughout the unibody and comes without a sunroof, headlamp washers, or rear window wiper. Equipment includes pop-up headlamps, fog lights, an emergency cutoff switch, dual black mirrors, a body-colored rear diffuser, and 16” Fuchs alloy wheels. The car rides on Dunlop SP Sport 2000 tires from 2001, measuring 225/50 in front and 245/45 at the rear.

Encased within a full Matter roll cage, the Turbo Cup’s interior comes without air conditioning, power accessories, storage pockets, or sun visors. This example is outfitted with a Recaro racing bucket seat, a Sabelt safety harness, a four-spoke leather steering wheel, and a standard passenger seat with leather and Porsche script cloth upholstery.

The 944 Turbo Cup features a 220-horsepower 2.5-liter inline-four engine with a K26-6 turbocharger and a magnesium intake manifold and oil sump. The reinforced 5-speed manual transmission is paired with an oil cooler, a racing clutch, a limited-slip differential, and heavy-duty axles. The car also comes with uprated dampers, springs, suspension mounts, and adjustable ABS. The seller reports the engine was rebuilt within the last 2k miles including new connecting rod bearings and a valve job. The transmission was also rebuilt along with the installation of new control arms, rebuilt shocks, new suspension bushings, brake pads, rotors, brake lines, and a new brake master cylinder. The mechanical work was performed at a cost of over $20k and service invoices are available dating back over 10 years.

This sale will include an owner’s manual and Turbo Cup supplement, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, service records, period race documentation, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This turbo cup participated in the first ever single-marque Porsche Cup series race at the Nürburgring and was campaigned by the only woman entered in the series.  It was raced only for the 1986 season and then became a street car.  I imported the car into the U.S. last year.”

@das92 yes, I can verify numbers are matching. As for the paint, the entire car has been painted, as evident by meter readings I did on the car when it first arrived (readings were between 15 and 30 mm). The entire front of the car (fenders/doors/bumper cover) has PPF on it.

Interesting paper work in the pictures can you tell me if any of those represent a log book from the race history? Also is there a Wagenpass associated with the car?
    Thanks

The certificate of authenticity is shown in the documents, but there aren't any photos of the engine or transmission numbers shown, are these verified and matching the COA? Do you have the paint meter readings for this car?

@das92 After the Iconic auction the entire suspension was rebuild and the transmission was rebuilt just before I imported the car. Service records are in the gallery.

@Silver930 I will look at the driver visor tomorrow and take photos

Wonderful Turbo Cup here this is the early 225hp version in 1987 they went to 250hp. One important fact is these cars were built and at Porsche Motorsport in Weissach they are true race cars and from what I have read and learned is everything was tweaked on these Cup cars.
The Fuchs wheels are 8" x 16 front and 9" x 16 Rear so they took the normal Rear 951 8" Fuchs and put it upfront and put a 930 Rear Fuchs 9" x 16" in rear. To me the coolest set up on a 944 with out ABS brakes. As you may know 944 turbos got ABS in 1987 and had to go with Hi offset Phone dials the 1987 > Turbo Cups are Magnesium. These cars are amazing on the track and can be driven to cars and coffee and prob will be the only real Turbo Cup present or go out and ripe around the Tail of the Dragon !!!! Cant beat it.
One thing to note is they should have a driver side sun visor that is specific for these cars as it bends around the matter roll cage bar that runs along the front roof line. If that is in this car a photo would be cool as its unique.
Lots of good videos on youtube of the cars racing back in the day.

Last Porsche built only 191 or 192 Turbo Cup cars world wide.
I know the USA only got 11 but 2 of those went to Canada.
Not sure how many of these early Turbo Cups in 1986 had been built but I hear about 40 total.

Hello, what has been done service wise over the past 600 kilometers since the July 2018 Iconic auction sale of this car? Certainly looks brighter, cosmetically. Are there service or repair records from the past few years?

@tvth996 no major engine differences. Internals are same as street car and even the turbo is the same. The factory rated bhp is also the same as the street car

  • tvth996 1 monthago

Are there any major engine build differences between the street and this cup version in terms of durability or rebuild frequency
