1987 Porsche 911 Carrera G50

Finished in Guards Red over a Black leather interior, this 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera marks the inaugural year of the desirable G50 manual gearbox. It was factory equipped with a Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 cassette radio, a central locking system, automatic climate control, cruise control,  sport shock absorbers, and a sunroof. This 911 Carrera was delivered new in North Carolina, and spent time in Florida before being acquired by the current owner in 2005 with 74,300 miles. Under their care, the top end of the engine was rebuilt including new cylinders, pistons, valves, valve guides, and an update of the gearbox release fork and bearings. Accompanied by detailed service records since new and now showing just over 94,600 miles on the odometer, this 1987 Carrera is being offered at auction by the seller based out of Massachusetts.

Finished in traditional Guards Red (027), this 911 features a power-operated sunroof, integrated fog lights, and impact bumpers with black trim. The seller reports that the vehicle has been kept in a climate-controlled garage and stored under a car cover, and has been regularly detailed. The seller also notes that the rear engine cover was replaced due to cosmetic reasons, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. The 15” Fuchs wheels are finished in black with a machined lip, and are mounted with Pirelli P600 tires displaying date codes from 2015 with less than 4500 miles driven, and an additional set of non-original 16” Fuchs wheels will accompany the sale, though the seller states they are in need of refinishing.

The interior is upholstered in black leather, featuring power-adjustable seats and matching door panels. Amenities include a power-operated sunroof, a ??Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 cassette radio, a central locking system, automatic climate control, and cruise control. The driver is supplied with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, VDO instrumentation, a Quartz clock, and a passenger-side floor-mounted fire extinguisher. The seller notes some minor wear on the driver’s side seat bolster, and the cruise control is operational but not currently connected.

This Carrera is powered by a 3.2-liter M930/25 flat-six, which was factory rated at 217 horsepower and 195 lb-ft. The rear wheels are driven by a G50 5-speed manual transaxle. The top end of the engine was rebuilt by European Performance Engineering in Natick, MA, which included the replacement of the cylinders, pistons, valves, valve guides, as well as an update of the gearbox release fork and bearings. The seller reports that the engine oil was changed, the valves were adjusted, and the air filters were changed in October of 2021, and other recent service includes an upgraded battery disconnect switch, replacement of the alternator and ground cable, installation of a new rear deck lid strut, and a new PCV hose. The car is no longer equipped with the factory catalytic converter, but it will be included in the sale, as well as detailed service records since new.

This sale will include 2 keys, owner’s manuals, the original spare tire, a car cover, an additional set of 16” Fuchs wheels, and comprehensive service records dating back to 1987.

@Tugboat997 The Porsche specialist who works on my car has not informed me of any other rust that has been found. The rust spot under the windshield is a common problem on this generation of Porsches as it is a spot where water can be held to cause the rust.

  • Tugboat997 (registered bidder) 1 monthago

Nice looking G50. I am interested and probably most concerned about the rust. Has the car been inspected to look for other areas of rust and/ or do you know the extent of the current problem? Thanks

@BlueDevils00 The catalytic converter was removed when no longer required for cars over 25 years old in Massachusetts. I still have it and will supply it with the car when sold. I do not know the condition of the catalytic converters internal components, but the 911 passed annual state inspection before it was removed.

I have pictures of the 16" wheels and will upload them now, but will point out that they do need to be restored. I bought them used and used them for a few years, but realized the original 15" wheels are far more comfortable on the road.

@live2drive_porsche I tried to lift the rubber molding at the bottom of the windshield to photograph it, but was afraid I was going to damage it by doing so, therefore I could not photograph it lifted.

  • live2drive_porsche (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Is it possible to get a picture the molding lifted to see the extent of the paint issue shown in photo 116? Thanks!

@Mrosilio I am not aware of the front bumper having ever been removed. The gap between the front bumper and body panel below it is uniform at the front but tighter at the ends on each side. Looking at it just now, it appears to have been originally installed that way to allow the front bumper to retract with a minor impact without causing damage. And no, the font bumper has never had impact to my knowledge.

  • Mrosilio (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Photos 106 & 107 - Looks like the bottom half of the bumper is coming apart.
Was it ever removed for any reason?

  • jjra3958 (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@Mrosilio No smoke on startup since the engine was rebuilt in 2013. I will admit that I don't know the exact oil used, but the mechanic who maintains the car has only worked on Porsches since he opened his shop long ago and he also owns an '87 911 just like mine. I do remember going to a tech session at his shop when he indicated there was a very specific oil he used on the older air cooled Porsches that he felt was the best.

The sunroof does work perfectly as I confirmed that when photographing the car for the auction listing. I did that because I am not a sunroof fan and never open it when driving the car.

  • Mrosilio (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Hey - Any smoke on start up or in general?
What kind of oil have you been running?
    Sun roof operating?

    Thanks

@stupendous There are far too many documents to photograph but I have uploaded two charts showing the dates, mileage, and summarizing the work performed each time.

Do you have photos of some of the service records of the car?

  • jjra3958 (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@Porsche_Man I did upload a photo, but have found that the PCARmarket site does not always display changes quickly.

No, I have not gotten an estimate for the repair of the small, initial indication that rust is starting to occur there, but will ask a friend how much he paid to repair a similar condition on his 993.

  • Porsche_Man (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Have you ever gotten an estimate for the cowl rust repair? And I dont see the photo of the rust in your pictures.

  • jjra3958 (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

The small dent was created when I was stopped at the exit from a coffee shop parking lot and a guy behind me accidentally slipped his foot off his brake pedal and idled into the back of my car from a couple of feet behind. When I went to have it repaired, the body shop (owned by a Porsche friend) said they could not remove the dent and so replaced the engine lid. That was before the current dent removal technology which could remove the dent from the underside without affecting the paint finish. I still have the original engine lid which will be supplied with the car.

There is one very small rust spot at the underside of the windshield, which is common on older Porsches, as I've seen on friend's cars. The photo must have been missed in the original upload, but I have just uploaded it now. I have not found any other rust spots on the car.

  • stupendous (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

What happened with the rear deck lid that required replacing? Any rust anywhere? Looks very nice.

  • BlueDevils00 (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

@jjra3958 - understand on the timing. You’ll get a lot of similar requests. And the car looks well maintained. Thanks

  • jjra3958 (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

I do not currently have a video showing the things you would like to see and, unfortunately, will not have the time to create one until possibly the middle of next week due to a full schedule. There are no leaks at all. If any leak has started, it is immediately fixed when noticed and none have been noticed in the last year. I had the AC checked by my mechanic, who only works on Porsches and has an '87 just like mine, and he confirmed it is fully functional the last time he looked. However, I don't know if you are aware that the standard AC in this Porsche model does not offer a lot of cool air. I therefore don't use it and prefer driving with the windows open.

I do my best to maintain the car as well as possible and rely on someone I believe is the best Porsche mechanic in the Boston area for most of the work needed.

  • BlueDevils00 (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Can you post the obligatory videos - cold start, driving, running through gears, etc. Also any notable leaks and status of AC? Thanks
Car looks very well kept and maintained.
