For the 1987 model year, the 911 Carrera received a more powerfully tuned engine and a new 5-speed G50 manual transaxle providing a refined driving experience. This Targa version was purchased new in Spokane, Washington, and spent time in Arizona, Colorado, and California, before moving to Hawaii in 1997 with just over 39k miles on the odometer. The car was purchased by the current owner in 2022 and treated to extensive service over the following years including a new rear main seal, clutch, flywheel, engine sensors, fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs, an A/C system overhaul, fuel injector cleaning, new speakers, tires, upgraded Bilstein sport shocks, and much more. Showing approximately 67k miles on the odometer, this Targa is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Hawaii.

This 911 is finished in Guards Red (L80K) with a removable black roof panel, a gloss black Targa bar, and factory 16” Fuchs alloy wheels. Other equipment includes integrated front fog lights, H4 headlamps, and a heated rear window. The seller believes the car’s clear coat was previously refinished and confirms the front headlamp bezel was repainted in 2005. Some touched-up paint chips are present around the mirrors, a small dent is visible on the left front fender, the passenger side fog lamp lens is cracked, and some small hairline scratches are present on the driver’s door. New Firestone Firehawk tires were mounted in 2022 and the headlamps were replaced in 2023. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, this 911 features a Champagne Beige leather interior (PE) with matching carpets and optional 8-way power front seats. Accessories include a four-spoke black leather steering wheel, power windows, air conditioning, a central locking system, cruise control, black rubber floor mats, and an aftermarket Pioneer stereo. The driver’s seat has been reupholstered, new OEM speakers and grille covers have been installed, the power mirror switch and passenger side window motor have been replaced, and the A/C system was serviced in 2023 with a new compressor, condenser, and evaporator. The seller notes a small tear in the carpet near the clutch pedal, surface rust on the rear seatbelt bolts, the wiring to the driver’s door speaker is not working, and the power seats are beginning to fail in some directions.

An air-cooled 3.2-liter flat-six engine delivers up to 217 HP and 195 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 5-speed G50 manual transaxle. In 2022, a major service was performed including a new rear main seal, clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, release bearing guide, ring gear, master and slave cylinders, main shifter guide tube bushing, ball cup shifter busing, a new starter solenoid, CV boots, and a rear hood support. The reference sensors were also replaced along with the oxygen and cylinder head temperature sensors, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pressure dampener, a fuel injector cleaning, and the installation of upgraded Bilstein sport shocks in the rear. The spark plugs, distributor cap, and airflow meter were replaced in February 2023 and a new battery was installed in August 2023 during a 60k-mile service.

This sale will include service records, owner’s manuals, a spare tire, a car cover, a battery charger, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This low mileage 1987 911 Targa with G50 transmission is a blast to drive.  It's perfect for a daily driver or a weekend cruiser. Service records go back to 2005.  This car is ready to drive, with all of the major service items recently completed.  This is not a project car.”

@Swaje It was recovered by a former owner with the cabriolet material. Easy to remove and fold (like an accordion) to fit in the front storage compartment. The windows don't seal perfectly, so in a heavy downpour you may get some dripping, but nothing major.

What is the condition of the Targa top? Does it leak?

  • spaul808 (seller) 1 monthago

@Swaje The driver's seat was recovered by a former owner, so the color shade is slightly different from the passenger seat, although the lighting in the picture exaggerates the difference. It isn't very noticeable under most lighting conditions.

  • Swaje (registered bidder) 1 monthago

It appears that the drivers seat has a slightly different color than the passenger seat. Or is it just the angle of the picture?

Nice Targa from a great year. Paint meter readings would prob have settled the paint respray issue. A lot of good work has been done.

@Dmnccrps I don’t have any video of that. It’s minor and my mechanic said it’s typical for the 3.2L Carrera.

  • Dmnccrps (registered bidder) 1 monthago

@spaul808 thank you. I was reading the PPI and it was indicated that there is a small leak. Do you by any chance have a video of the smoke on start up, idle and fast acceleration? GLWS

  • spaul808 (seller) 1 monthago

@Rapnj you could factor shipping into your bid price. I provided shipping references below if you want to obtain a quote.

  • Rapnj 1 monthago

Nice car…. Too far away, shipping will be costly to New Jersey.

  • spaul808 (seller) 1 monthago

@Dmnccrps no dripping oil. My garage floor is clean. Take a look at the 60k service notes - they reference the source of potential leaks. The car does burn some oil (exhaust smoke) on startup and sometimes when idling are accelerating from a stop. I don’t know about CA smog, but the car passed California smog check in 1997 as noted on CARFAX.

  • Dmnccrps (registered bidder) 1 monthago

Any Oil leaks? Pic 88, 108 and 109 appears to have stains on the valve cover and panels?
And will this vehicle pass CA smog? Thanks

  • spaul808 (seller) 1 monthago

@Dmnccrps no rebuild to my knowledge. I provided all service records that were provided when I bought it in 2022 and everything I had done since then.

  • Dmnccrps (registered bidder) 1 monthago

@spaul808 thank you! Follow up question. Is the 67k true miles? Any engine rebuild during or prior to your ownership? Thanks again

  • spaul808 (seller) 1 monthago

@Dmnccrps Sorry, I didn’t answer your second question. No other rust except on some of the other interior trim screw heads. Nothing on the frame or mechanical parts.

  • spaul808 (seller) 1 monthago

@Dmnccrps I just uploaded a cropped photo showing the hinge I just mentioned

  • spaul808 (seller) 1 monthago

@Dmnccrps Zoom in on the image that shows the rear seatbelts. The surface rust is on the hinge where the backrest folds down.

  • Dmnccrps (registered bidder) 1 monthago

Hi! Do you have a photo of the surface rust at the back seat? Any other rust issues?Thank you!

  • spaul808 (seller) 1 monthago

    @tff I’m pretty sure it’s clear coated.

  • tff (registered bidder) 1 monthago

This car should have come from the factory with a single stage paint, to my understanding. Is the paint presently single stage or clear-coated? Should be easy to tell by seeing if a polishing pad turns red even when using a very mild polish.

  • spaul808 (seller) 1 monthago

Thanks for asking. Depends on your shipping method from Honolulu to the mainland (air or sea) and then how it is trucked (enclosed or not). You can get a fast quote here: https://www.montway.com/. If you want to ship by air overnight to LAX checkout https://www.pacificaircargo.com/services/vehicles/

    Pickup zip code is 96817

  • tff (registered bidder) 1 monthago

Any idea how much the cost adder is for shipping to the mainland US? (I know west coast to east coast would be approx. $3k for for enclosed transport).

  • spaul808 (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@Bruce914 Thanks for commenting. I was told that that is how they were sprayed originally, but I'm providing the photos for full disclosure and so you can make your own determination. I don't have any paperwork from any previous owner that would confirm a respray.

  • Bruce914 (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Good looking car and seems that all the mechanicals have been sorted out. Color was applied and not just clear coat as seen by the overspray on the rubbers/trim panels.

  • spaul808 (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

I really hope this car goes to a good home. It was an impulsive purchase two years ago and my first experience with a classic car. It's super fun to drive, and it's well sorted. You can see that I've completed extensive maintenance work. I'm selling because I've learned that I'm not the "car guy" that I aspired to be when I bought it.
