Now available for auction is this 1987 Porsche 944 S racecar finished in red over a lightweight interior.  This 944 has been made race-ready with the addition of a full roll cage, some considerable performance modifications and an upgraded 3.0 L motor sourced from a later S2 model.  Highlighting a recent engine rebuild and new clutch, this SCCA/ITR-prepared 944 racecar is the perfect opportunity for any enthusiast looking to get out on the track.

The red exterior finish is said to be in good shape with some typical track going wear, detailed images are provided in the photo gallery.  Exterior details include an aftermarket front bumper with integrated air vents and Fiske lightweight wheels mounted with slick racing tires.  This sale will also include a spare set of Porsche Turbo Twist wheels with slicks, and another set of Porsche D90 wheels with rain tires.

Inside, the cabin has been stripped out and prepared with track-oriented safety equipment including a full roll cage with driver’s side petty bars and a newly installed Cobra FIA racing seat with Schroth harness (exp. 12/20).  The seller confirms all essential gauges and electrical component to remain fully functional.

This 944 S has been upgraded with a larger 3.0 L inline 4-cylinder engine sourced from a later S2 model.  Power is sent to the rear wheels by way of a factory 5-speed manual transmission which was paired with a new clutch in 2019.  Both the top and bottom ends of the engine were also fully rebuilt in 2019 with only two weekends of racing since.  This 944 showcases some considerable performance modifications including:

  • Custom Stainless Exhaust with Borla Muffler
  • VEMS ECM
  • Accu Sump Oil System
  • Porsche M030 Big Brake Kit
  • MCS Adjustable Shocks / Eibach Springs
  • Bruce’s Torsion Tube Replacement

The rear struts were newly serviced and resealed, and the seller confirms the oil to have been changed since the car’s last race day.  This 944 is not road compliant, although it is said to be in top running order just waiting for a new driver.

The sale of this 944 S will include one master key, an SCCA logbook and a box of spare parts including the original torsion tube and ECM.  If you’re in the market for a ready-to-race vintage Porsche, this 3.0 L 944 S may just be the one.

Can the seller elaborate on the cage a bit? When was it built? Is the what is the material and thickness, when was it last safety inspected for use? Specifically what safety standard was it built to meet?

I know we are getting down to the end, but can any photos of the log book be added?

@Treefort77 no, the car has the original S transmission and has a factory LSD diff that was installed in 2006. I do have a dyno sheet for the car and it makes 218hp at the rear wheels at 6500 RPM.

@939 Bottom end was constructed by Autobahn Performance in Peabody, MA and the bottom end is essentially stock with the only upgrades being Turbo Rods (forged) and then new rod and main bearings and new piston rings. The pistons are stock to leave it 3.0L.

The head is a Jon Milledge head which means it was built by “the authority” on 944’s.

The motor as it sits – has ZERO street hours as it is not street legal. The original engine is not with the car nor is it included. When I acquired the car it is as you see it with limited spares (2 additional sets of wheels as detailed in the add, the original torsion tube, the original ECM and some other small bits).

The gearbox is the original S (not S2) box with an factory LSD diff that was last apart for new synchro’s in 2006.

As stated in the advertisement, there is no title with the car and it is a track car only.

As for car storage, I can BUT it would come at a storage cost of $150/month (prorated if picked up sometime other than the month end from when the storage fee would start).

Is the S2 engine stock or modified (internally)?
How many street and racing miles are on the S2 engine?
Is the original engine part of the package (either complete or in pieces)?.
Does it have S2 gearbox? With or without LSD?
    Does it have clear title?

Does the car have a S2 tranny and LSD... if so who's. Any dyno sheets of RWHP?
