Now available for auction is this 1988 Ferrari 328 GTS finished in Rosso Corsa over a tan Connolly leather interior. Introduced at the 1985 Frankfurt Auto Salon, the Ferrari 328 was the final evolution of Ferrari’s transverse-mounted naturally aspirated V8 Dino engine and is considered one of the best driver's Ferraris of the era. This example was delivered new to Ferrari of Philadelphia and remained in a climate-controlled facility as part of a private collection with its second owner from 1996 to May of 2020 when it was acquired by the seller. It has since received a new battery, water pump, and a recent belt service. Factory equipped with desirable suspension revisions and convex wheels, this 328 is now being offered for auction out of South Carolina showing approximately 15k miles on the odometer.

This 328 GTS is finished in the unmistakable shade of Rosso Corsa with a removable black roof panel. The Pininfarina-designed bodywork was derived from the preceding 308 model and updated with a redesigned nose portion as well as color-matched bumpers. Other features include a roof spoiler, side air intakes, pop-up headlights, black side mirrors with a passenger-side Ferrari logo, integrated fog lamps, and quad exhaust tips in the rear valance. This 328 GTS rides on factory 16” 5-spoke convex wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza tires. The seller notes the front valence has been refinished for cosmetic purposes, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The interior is trimmed in tan Connolly leather with matching carpeting and a contrasting black dashboard. The driver is supplied with a three-spoke MOMO steering wheel, Veglia instrumentation, and a 5-speed gated shifter. Amenities include power windows, mirrors, and locks as well as air conditioning and a Blaupunkt cassette stereo. The seller notes some minor wear to the driver’s seat.

The mid-mounted 3.2L Tipo F105 V8 is equipped with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and was factory rated at 270 HP and 231 lb-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential, allowing the 328 GTS to accelerate to 60 MPH in less than 6 seconds. In the late 1988 model year, the 328 was updated with redesigned suspension geometry. Maintenance since May of 2020 is said to have included a new battery and water pump as well as a recent belt service by European Road Racing of Charleston, South Carolina along with recharge of the air conditioning system, an oil and filter change, and new spark plugs.

This sale will include a clean title.

    I received a response from a Ferrari expert about why the convex wheels were delivered without the ABS:

    “Ferrari is always going through evolution. We did receive the new 328s with convex wheels before we got cars with ABS. I don't know how many were delivered with the later wheels but it is not uncommon for Ferrari to update the car in anticipation of the new version. Often we saw changes to the current models before they became standard on the new versions.”

    @Dr.Lakes

    Appreciate your comments.
    I read that none of the 1988.5 US models had ABS on FerrariChat this morning as well, although I can not confirm that.

    A lot of us were puzzled why Ferrari would change the wheels from concave to convex for the large US market to accomodate ABS, but yet not supply them in the vehicle.

  • drmoops (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    @BigSwole I cant say exactly how many cars of this spec are out there, but if you look at overall numbers it has to be only a handful. From my research, the lifecycle of the 328 consisted of about 7500 cars give or take a few hundred. GTS outpaced slicktops by 4-5:1 ABS and the suspension upgrades happened mid year in 88 (wikipedia has a good timeline for these updates. per Wiki US 88s had the suspension and wheels but not ABS while it was an option in europe for 88) I was reading that some collectors prefer no ABS as its just another 35yo system to potentially go wrong and cost money. One cherry on top is that Enzo died in 88 meaning that he could have very well looked upon this car in the factory approvingly (or disapprovingly as it seems that was his more natural state).

  • DrLakes (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    From what I've read, the old ABS systems don't work particularly well anyhow so it shouldn't stop anyone from bidding, I was just noting it. US-only 88.5's weren't available with optional ABS unlike the rest of the world is what it says online. Cheers for a beautiful car!

  • BigSwole (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    Thank you for the email and info this morning Yaris (seller). I didn't know they made 88's that had the convex wheels and other improvements but no ABS. Very strange. I can't say it having or not having ABS makes much difference to me as for driving the car, I just wonder if it changes anything in terms of value / collectable / etc. Any new info on how many there are like this prior to the auction closing would be helpful if anybody else knows. Very happy to hear from the gentlemen who looked at it this wknd. and give his comments. Thank you! I wished the AC in these worked better, as I'm an extremely hot natured person. I had to drive my 85 308 only when it was cooler / dryer out. Summer was not the time for me with that car, and it had an upgraded AC system too but still not great.

    Good Morning,

    Today is the final day of the auction. I continue to appreciate the interest and comments to date.

    Regarding @Dr.Lakes comments, there is no ABS on the vehicle and I do not know why there is a gap in the Carfax, although it did sit in the previous owners collection for a long period of time.

    The sweet spot of these vehicles is the 1988.5 328 with all the improvements including revised steering rack, suspension, and interior improvements over the earlier cars. less ABS, which this car possesses.

  • PCARMARKET_MODERATOR 2 yearsago

    It should be stated that this 328 is without ABS brakes.

  • jsweet (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    Seller, can you verify if this vehicle has ABS brakes?

  • drmoops (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    Hello fellow bidders/virtual tire-kickers. Full disclosure, I am not a vintage Ferrari expert by any means but I am local to this car and the seller was kind/accommodating enough to let me give the car a once over this weekend. It's worth stating that I have no prior relationship with the owner.
    Cosmetically the car is beautiful and presented as near "show-room" as could reasonably be expected for a 35yo car that has been gently and lovingly driven. I poked around the engine bay and it is very clean and tidy. I didn't see any rust issues on the body (the car wasn't on a lift, so I can't comment on the underside). The interior leather, switch gear, etc is very well preserved and all major systems seem to be working as you'd expect (the AC is a bit anemic, but appropriately vintage Ferrari). The lights worked and the horn was charming.
    The car turned over from cold first try with no drama or smoke. Seller took me for a quick blast down the road. Sounds great, didnt notice any wind noise from the targa top, water and oil temp stayed right in the middle of the dial. No fluid puddles under the car from where it was parked. 2nd gear took a little while to warm up, but that's par for the course from my research.
    Seller seemed to know his Ferraris and was congenial and honest. This is a GORGEOUS car and I want it badly! I'd be keeping my mouth shut about how great it was if I thought I was the appropriate steward for this car or if I had more space/money. If you're looking for a 328gts, I don't imagine they get much better than this. Good luck to the seller and bidders!

  • DrLakes (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    Any idea as to why there is a 15 year carfax gap?

  • DrLakes (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    There is no direct picture, but it looks like the brake fluid reservoir is not in the center of the front trunk (picture 21, 137), therefore this car does not have ABS. Convex wheels = updated suspension, but not necessarily ABS for the non-89 model years.

    Please see the photo posted with the lights reversed back to their proper position.
    When I drove the car back to the storage facility, I could have sworn I felt about a 50 horsepower bump!

    I just drove the car back from the shop where I had the lights reversed. I will post a photo to verify.

    I took the car in to the shop this afternoon to have the lights reversed to their correct positions. We will let the new owner adjust the badges if they desire.

  • s219 (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

    @jbauto After looking at so many 308/328 and owning one, the tail lights jumped out at me, otherwise it could be very easy to miss. Often see little easter eggs like this which are good to explore further.

  • jbauto (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

    Good eye @s219. Swap the lights and leave the badges I suppose, but take a real close look for tape edges. Car really looks great. GL

  • Yaris (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

    @s219
    And I will have both issues addressed by the end of the auction. Thank you for pointing that oversight out.

  • Yaris (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

    @s219
    I know of no body work that was done to rear when I purchased the vehicle and the Carfax corresponds to no accidents or damage reported.

  • s219 (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

    Has body work been done to the rear? The brake lights and turn signals are reversed, and the 328/GTS badging is in the wrong place.

    Good Afternoon,

    For my first auction I have my 1988.5 Ferrari 328 GTS up for sale. I have owned it since April of 2020 where it has been housed in a climate controlled facility.

    I take extreme pride in being the caretaker of all of my vehicles, this one included. The vehicle was in great condition when I purchased it, however it hadn’t been driven for several years sitting in a private collection. Now with a new battery, water pump, and belt service performed in October 2021, this Ferrari wants to be driven!

    The next lucky owner will be able to drive around town in a turnkey vehicle and not be concerned about a major service for a while.

    I am available to answer your questions during the auction.
