The Reynard 88D is an open-wheel Formula 3000 race car developed by Malcolm Oastler and built by British manufacturer Reynard Motorsport for the 1988 F3000 Championship season in Europe and Japan. This example, chassis #009, is one of two Reynard 88Ds acquired by the ORECA (Organisation Exploitation Compétition Automobiles) team and made its debut at the Pau Grand Prix FIA International Championship in late May 1988, driven by Pierre-Henri Raphanel. After seven more races with Raphanel behind the wheel throughout 1988, The Ford Cosworth-powered car was eventually sold by ORECA to a private collector in the South of France in 1990. The car remained with its first private owner up until 1996 before it was sold to Raymond Alberto who kept it for the next 24 years. Having been cared for by its current owner since 2020, this authentic F3000 race car is now being offered for auction out of Italy.

The Reynard 88D is based upon a carbon fiber composite monocoque chassis. This example retains its #7 1988 livery featuring blue and white paint with a red stripe as well as Stimorol, La Cinq, and Marlboro sponsorship decals on its removable lightweight bodywork. The car rides on staggered 5-spoke center lock wheels dressed in Avon F3000 racing slicks.

The single-seat cockpit presents a molded backrest along with a blue ORECA Motorsport safety harness, a circular helmet pad, and a removable three-spoke MOMO steering wheel wrapped in black suede. The driver is situated ahead of a 10k-rpm Stack tachometer flanked by a Racetech water temperature gauge on the left and an oil temperate/pressure gauge on the right. Other features include a fire suppression system, an engine start button, a sway bar stiffness lever, and a Cosworth engine timing adjuster.

Reynard 88D #009 is powered by a naturally aspirated Ford-Cosworth 3.0-liter 90° V8 mated to a 5-speed Reynard/Hewland manual gearbox that sends over 400 HP to the rear wheels. The chassis includes double wishbone pushrod-type suspension with adjustable Koni coilovers as well as AP Racing disc brakes. The seller indicates an engine overhaul was completed along with several mechanical upgrades under prior ownership with approximately 50km driven since, and the car is ready for historic racing events.

This F3000 race car is accompanied by an assortment of spare parts, an FIA historic technical passport, and a bill of sale.

The seller would like you to know: "Formula 3000 Chassis 09-Ford Cosworth Engine Over 400 HP Hewland Gearbox. This beautiful Reynard specimen raced only 8 Grands Prix in its entire career and always with the same driver Raphanel showed truly incredible competitiveness, obtaining 2 sixth places, 1 third place, and a fifth and 2 retirements while he was third. At the end of its career, it was purchased by a collector from the south of France, who carried out a complete upgrade of the mechanics, in fact, the very powerful Cosworth engine has only 50 km under its belt"

I only see two master cylinders up front. One is front brakes. Is the other the rear brakes or the clutch? Where is the third master cylinder?

  • SamIam (registered bidder) 10 months, 2 weeksago

I understand the DOT won't be involved, but if you have shipped a low clearance race car like this, do you know if it has to be crated or go in its own container? Can you inform us on shipping costs or other details unique to shipping a formula car?

  • Retrogarage1 (seller) 10 months, 2 weeksago

@SamIam opposite of your idea it will be easier then ship a regaular cars u besides shipping costs and paying customs fees you wont have the hassle of DOT waiting approvals etc etc it will be as simple and shipping any others items they will just inspect the fluids , making sure all the tanks are empty.

  • SamIam (registered bidder) 10 months, 2 weeksago

I imagine this is not simple to ship, not going roll on roll off a big ship. Any info on how much to ship to California (San Francisco) and how it would get done?
