Available for auction is this European market 1988 Mercedes-Benz R107 420SL finished in Diamond Blue Metallic over Royal Blue leather. The first V8-powered SL-Class, the R107 was produced from 1971-1989. The 420SL version was launched at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1985 replacing the outgoing 380SL in Europe, featuring a larger 4.2L M116 V8. Just over 2k examples were built during its four-year production run. This 1988 SL was originally ordered through Mercedes-Benz's Mönchengladbach branch in Germany with full power accessories, heated seats, an automatic transmission, and a matching removable hardtop. Having since remained under the care of a single owner in Texas, this rare 420SL is now being offered for auction showing just over 24k miles on the odometer.
This SL comes finished in Diamond Blue Metallic (355) with a matching removable hardtop and a retractable Dark Blue soft top. Additional equipment includes European-market bumpers and headlights, fog lamps, a third brake light, and factory 15″ Gullideckel alloy wheels dressed in a set of Uniroyal tires. The convertible top was recently replaced and the seller notes the hood and driver's side front fender were refinished due to fading of the original paint, detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is trimmed in Royal Blue (272) leather with matching carpets and burl wood inlays throughout the dashboard and center console. Factory equipment includes power windows, door locks, and mirrors, a cassette stereo, air conditioning, cruise control and heated seats. The seller confirms all gauges, lights, and accessorie remain fully functional.
Power comes from a 4.2L M116 V8 engine which produces up to 215 HP and 239 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 4G-Tronic automatic transmission. The R107 was factory equipped with power steering, a fully independent suspension, and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes. The car is accompanied by service records from new and is said to remain unmodified.
This sale will include original German license plates, service records, owner's manuals, a full-size spare, and a clean title. One of the least common R107 models and an incredibly rare sight on U.S. roads, this sparingly driven 420SL awaits its next caretaker.

@TheGerman yes I just ran it thru Carfax. The report itself is a little odd - doesn’t give any vehicle details (I.e., year and model number) but it gives device history going back to 2001 and the other details align (albeit thin).

An older gentleman own the car and it was not driven much in the past few years no flood damage clean texas title runs and drives great no rust issues
Hi. Good looking car, love the euro style. A few questions:
1) passenger side door middle panel has a different color in a few pics (for example, #14). Are you aware of repaint/repair there?
2) according to carfax this car has been registered near Houston since 2001. any flood damage that you are aware of?

This is the SL that the designers wanted, and Europe favored. But US versions had the four-eye headlights and the humongous 5mph bumpers required by our government. A comment from a European reviewer was that in the US version "the car was ruined" and I agree.
In 1986 I imported a European version from England, put on the four-eye headlights to pass inspection here, and immediately put back on the proper euro headlights, like this car.
