Up for auction is this nicely-presented 1988 Porsche 911 Targa G50 finished in Guards Red over a tan leather interior.  Having been recently refreshed by the current owner, this example is said to remain in great overall condition with a clean bill of health.  The car is ready to be enjoyed by a new owner and currently shows 157k miles on the odometer.  It is being offered out of Thousand Oaks, CA.

The classic Guards Red finish on this Targa is stated to be in excellent condition (detailed images are available in the photo gallery). In efforts of elevating this Targa’s exterior condition, the seller states that some paint correction has been performed on the driver’s door and rear right fender.  A few key features of this Targa include a newly added OEM Tea Tray spoiler, an iconic black Targa bar and a set of factory black Fuchs wheels that wear new Yokohama tires.  The original decklid will be included with the sale.

Inside, you will find an extremely well-kept tan leather interior.  An upgraded MOMO steering wheel has been added and the seller states that the front seats have been professionally recovered.  The seller also notes that new door stops have been fabricated and installed.  All electronics are said to be in working order including the factory head unit and power windows.

This Targa retains its numbers matching 3.2 L flat-six engine that is rated at approximately 207 HP. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a highly desirable G50 5-speed transmission that features tighter shift linkage which makes for a more connected driving experience. A recent service was carried out which included the following items: Replacement of all fluids and filters, brand new OEM fan and with housing, new Bosch battery, and new windshield wiper motor. Additionally, at approximately 155k miles, the car received a valve adjustment along with a compression test and 4-wheel alignment. This Targa is stated to be in excellent driving condition.

The sale will include two keys, books, service records, tools, a clean Carfax report, and the original decklid.

@joshuaycrs I have no objection to a PPI but a price has to be agreed too first and PCAR does not allow any PPI to change the agreed upon price.

  • joshuaycrs (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@california3.2 If you're willing, I would still be interested pending a PPI at your local dealer.

@joshuaycrs I do not have an issue with it, but need to check with PCAR and their policy relative to this being a live auction.

  • joshuaycrs (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@california3.2, If I were to win, do you have any problem with me paying for a PPI (likely with the gentlemen at Rusnack you used) to ensure there aren't any material issues with the car (drivetrain/rust/prior damage/)?

@buckshot111 No, we have not had any issues with the performance of the engine or transmission. As I mentioned, the compression was checked before I bought it at 155k miles and it has been checked out by the Vintage Porsche Master Mechanic at Rusnak Porsche Westlake Village. I am happy to introduce the new owner to the Master Mechanic at Porsche who knows the car inside and out.

Has this engine had top end rebuild or engine overhaul? I've owned two 1988 911's one with 58k miles and one with 90k miles. The 1988 was notorious for blowing oil by worn valve guides, any issues with burning oil at 156k miles? The A/C is generally ok for mild climates, they definitely need an upgrade for FL or Texas climate.

  • california3.2 (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@rak1161 I bought as a project car for my two teenage boys before they went off to college. They will both be in college this August and the fun is over. Car drives and handles really well. As I mentioned in a previous thread, you could add sway bars and after market performance suspension (Ex. Elephant Racing). You also could modify the engine but I chose to keep it all stock as this is the most reliable engine and transmission combination made by Porsche.

@california3.2 Sent video of cold start and pic of steering wheel to PCAR for upload yesterday. Might be a slight delay on their end due to holiday weekend.

After putting in so much work why have you decided to sell it? Please also comment on the driving dynamics and what you feel could enhance driving dynamics. Thanks.

  • california3.2 (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@Love2bugs I will be able to put up a cold start video up some time tomorrow for everyone to review. Thanks for the request!

  • california3.2 (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@superfly Let me see if I can find a picture of the original steering wheel. It is an very good condition and comes with the car.

  • california3.2 (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@superfly AC works the way it should and blows cold. This was inspected as part of the "Pit Stop Inspection" and it was recommended that the freon could be recharged to get the air to blow even colder. I did not do this as it blows cold enough for me and I really do not use the air conditioning. The paint was performed by Premier Coach which a certified paint and body shop for Rusnak Porsche Westlake Village. They painted the T-Tray and corresponding deck lid to match the car and took care of a couple paint scratches. The front bumper, hood and mirrors have normal paint wear and tear with minor rock chips.

  • california3.2 (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@Love2bugs That is a good question and really up to your level of creativity. There are a number of performance enhancements you could make from upgrading the suspension and bushings, to sway bars, updated disc brake kits from a boxster or other source, The seal around the Targa top is good but those should be replaced from time to time to ensure a quieter ride. I did not install the engine insulation sound barrier which would be nice to have. Their are several headlight kits to update the lights to modern day technology. You could install a short throw shifter if you like that feel. There other routine items you could explore replacing on cars of this age. Hope this helps

  • california3.2 (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@panton The brakes have been checked at two different times since I've owned the car: 1. Rusnak Porsche at Westlake Village performed the pre-vehicle inspection which included the brakes, rotors, calipers and pads. The brakes were also inspected during the "Pit Stop Inspection" and road test. With these cars and any you need to depress the brakes hard from time to time to ensure any contaminants on the rotors and pads are cleared and the car stops straight and does not pull to one side. The brakes are tuned and aligned so when you need to depress hard the car stops consistently straight.

Nice Targa Brent! How is the AC operation? Also, when you say "paint correction" I assume you mean the normal paint correction that an auto detailer would do and not actual paint / body work, right? Do you have a photo of the original steering wheel? Thanks

  • Love2bugs (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

    Hi Brent
What items still remain on the to do list for the new owner? When can you
put a cold start video on the site?
    Thanks
    Dennis

  • panton (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

Hi Brent Do you when the brakes were service last? Any comments on the pads /rotors would be appreciated. Thanks

  • california3.2 (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

Hi, my name is Brent Rice and I purchased the Targa in May 2018 as a project car for me and my two teenage boys. The car was mechanically clean and the front seats had been recovered by an upholstery expert specializing in vintage Porsche. We wanted to keep the car original with a few minor modifications. Ex. Momo steering wheel, Rennline 2 Point Dual Bar Billet Aluminum Struts Tower Brase and Mount and period correct T-Tray. I have the original steering wheel and deck lid which comes with the car. We also installed Turbo Tie Rods, a new Alternator Fan to give the engine a clean look, new Fog Lamps & Bulbs and Front Spoiler Chin Guard was installed. Other parts were replaced that routinely go bad with these cars. Ex. Windshield Wiper Pump and Check Valves, new Door Stop were fabricated and installed, window stops in the doors, new shifter linkage to ensure smooth tight shifting, etc...
The car has been serviced and worked on by the Master Mechanic for vintage Porsche at Rusnack Westlake Village Porsche. In fact, he performed the Pre-Purcahse Inspection before I bought. I also performed a "Pit Stop" a couple months ago as we were getting ready to sell the car. He said this was the cleanest 1988 Targa he had ever worked on and he owns and races 4 vintage Porsche.

Let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer them.
