Sharing its engine with the prior model year's exclusive Turbo S version, the 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo features a 944 Turbo Cup racing power unit with an enlarged turbocharger, a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine rated at 250 HP, a transmission oil cooler, a limited-slip differential, a 5-speed manual transmission, and more. This 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo comes finished in Guards Red over a black leather interior. It is now being offered by its seller out of Minnesota while showing just over 52k miles on the odometer.

This example came factory-optioned with a Guards Red (LM3A) finish. The 944 Turbo is characterized by its sleek and aerodynamic shape, featuring Turbo-specific body enhancements including front and rear spoilers, side skirts, and a rear diffuser. Equipment also includes iconic pop-up headlights and 16” alloy disc wheels dressed in new Pirelli P Zero tires. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin sports black partial leather upholstery with a removable sunroof panel. Equipment includes a factory alarm system, Blaupunkt radio, power steering, a central locking system, automatic climate control, and a headlamp cleaning system. The seller notes very slight wear on the driver’s seat bolster and confirms all gauges, electronics, and accessories to be working properly.

Power is derived from a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine rated at 250 HP and 258 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed manual transmission with a factory limited-slip differential, allowing for acceleration from 0-60 MPH in approximately 5.7 seconds stock. Performance features include a specially-tuned sport suspension, an uprated clutch to handle increased torque, larger brakes borrowed from the 928 S4, and a Bosch anti-lock braking system. The seller adds that a new timing belt and retention, water pump, radiator hoses, rollers and seals, rear shocks, and front brake pads & sensors have been installed and a transmission fluid change was carried out. Additionally, the R134 refrigerant is said to have been filled. No outstanding maintenance items have been reported at this time.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, sales literature, a spare tire, a toolkit, and some documentation.

The seller would like you to know: “I have been around Porsches since I was 18. I am an active PCA member, past chapter President, Chapter chief driving instructor, and National PCA certified instructor. The car was a one-owner car until he passed away, I got the car from the estate and went thru and update what was needed. The car drivers like new. The car is completely unmolested and stock. This is a 34-year-old time capsule.”

Hi is this vehicle for sale ? Thanks

  • grgallo 3 months, 1 weekago

@grgallo my apologies for the typo, the Boxster Spyder is a 987.2. Also, to clarify the air-cooled 911's were both 1987, a Coupe and a Targa and the early Boxster was a 2000 model year.

thank goodness the seller put a reserve on this, and it didn't sell at the final bid. I've owned over the years 2 air-cooled 911's circa late '80's, an early Boxster, a 987.1 Boxster Spyder and a 997.1 and an '89 944 Turbo. SO, full disclosure, I sold the 944 Turbo, will I regret it? Too early to tell. But I can say without reservations the '89 944 Turbo is a great car, based on Porsche Cup cars and according to Road and Track back in the day they can run circles around similar year NA 911's. The car is balanced, fast and a thrill with the turbo kicking in at 4-5K RPM. As I prepared my market analysis (Jan-Jul 2023) prior to selling my 951 I noted the difficulty in coming up with a fair sales price. The cars are all over the spectrum of care, tracked or not, heavily modified or not, etc. This car appears to be very rare in terms of condition and care compared to what's available. Keep in mind as has been noted, the '89 is rare to begin with, less than 2,000 produced worldwide; yes, the 1988.5 (many were the Silver Rose) added another approx. 1,900 cars with this spec. Still over all these cars are rare. all the best with your sale or your decision to keep it. Indeed, a very rare example.

Ron, I wish you the very BEST on this sale...... it is a true bargain at your 'Buy it now price' and would be a steal at anything less. We all know how great these last of the Best turbos are and I for one would never sell mine for less than what your original 'ask' was on ClubTalk. In reading some of the info on the various forums we frequent, numbers left in the world of these specific '89s are really miniscule. Less than half are thought to exist after 35 years of street use, track loss, various accidents, etc. To actually have an existing near perfect example needing virtually nothing, owned by a true enthusiast, cared for since day one till today is a near miracle. This is a WORTHY example of some of the very best cars Porsche ever built ...... Best wishes on what ever may become. (Personally I hope you keep it forever)

@rhmoritz it’s stock so goes to 1 3/4 bar. No starting or electrical issues. Have a new DME relay in my glove box also.
    Ron

  • rhmoritz (registered bidder) 3 months, 1 weekago

Does the turbo spool up fully to 2 bar? Any starting or electrical issues? I always kept a spare DME relay in the glovebox. Very nice example!

  • Porschefreak (seller) 3 months, 1 weekago

@rhmoritz you know your 944’s! 🥰 No delamanation and rear hatch switch works. Brake fluid clean. No power steering leaks.clutch pedal feels soft and works great! As you know clutch pedal hard is a bad thing. Motor mounts good as when you rev the rpm’s and let it drop on its own no vibration. Coolant was done at time of water pump 2021. I appreciate 944 gurus.

  • rhmoritz (registered bidder) 3 months, 1 weekago

Prior 1991 944S2 owner here. Any delamination present on the rear hatch glass? Does remote hatch release switch work? Any leaks from the power steering hoses or seals? Original clutch and motor mounts? Recent coolant and brake flush?
    Thanks!
