1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet

Up for auction is this 1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet 5-speed finished in Guards Red over a black leather interior.  Marking the final evolution of the Porsche 944, the S2 model was launched in 1989 featuring a larger 3.0L 4-cylinder engine and revised styling from the Turbo model.  Highlighting noteworthy options such as sport seats and a limited slip differential, this S2 is up-to-date on all service and is being offered in great running condition.

The Guards Red finish on this 944 is said to be in great condition with some minor roadgoing wear as can be seen in the photo gallery.  This S2 Cabriolet showcases Turbo-derived styling with its revised nose and body-colored diffuser located below the rear bumper.  The car rides on factory D90 wheels which come dressed in Firestone Firehawks tires dated from 2018.

Inside, you will find a black leather interior that features factory Sport Seats.  The cabin is said to be in great condition with a recently reupholstered driver’s seat.  The seller notes that an aftermarket radio is present and that all gauges and electronics are in working order aside from a finicky cabriolet top release button.  The seller also notes that the air condition system has been updated, though is currently inoperable.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 3.0 L 4-cylinder engine which is mated to a numbers matching 5-speed manual transmission with a factory limited slip differential.  208 HP is sent to the rear wheels making for a 0-60 time of approximately 6.5 seconds.  The seller notes that a binder full of records since new will be provided with the sale that shows consistent maintenance including a recently replaced timing belt.  The following items recently performed within the last 3k miles:

  • New clutch
  • New flywheel
  • Rear main seal replaced
  • Koni front strut inserts installed
  • New font control arm bushings
  • New caster blocks
  • Fluids and filters changed
  • New belts
  • New stainless steel exhaust system installed

The sale of this 944 will include a set of two keys and a collection of service records dating back to the original purchase.  If you’re in search of a vintage Porsche, this 5-speed 944 S2 makes an excellent choice.

@Skindoc Will try to reply tonight about mileage when belts were replaced.

@Skindoc Don't know U.S. procedures but imagine for a U.S. spec car it should be easy. It was easy to get the car up here. Have a safety inspection, fix the things that are worn. have the car reinspected, register. No different than a car already in Canada. And U.S. has 25 year law so getting a U.S. spec car that was already registered in the U.S. and everything safety related is new should be easy.

When was the major timing belt/water pump, etc, service last performed? I see the comment on “new belts”, was this the service performed?

I believe for importation back into US, retaining a registered agent at the border is recommended along with tax payment? Do you know anymore about the process?

@Viperbmw69 I admit I don't know the shipping costs but I do know getting it back into the U.S. will be easy. Like any car this old there are things to fix. But all the pricey things have either already been fixed or are very good. I have a coupe S2 and a Datsun 2000 to restore and I just need the room and up here I use the coupe much more and I still put the coupe away in winter. I think the car is exceptional value at $12,500 and I would sell it for that. Below that I'll just store it until next spring and try again.

Ok thanks. I am very interested. What is a realistic number for you? I live in north Georgia so it would be very pricy for me to ship.

@Viperbmw69 I will try but it may take some time. However, for now I will tell you there is no rust anywhere on the car period and the car is from the U.S. not from Canada. Also, it was clearly not a daily driver so was not used in winter anyway. But I will try.

I would recommend getting your Alberta registration/miles fixed there or on carfax. It will kill your car's value due to the erroneous reporting.
