This 1991 Land Rover Defender 90 was imported to the United States from Italy in 2020 after a major restoration including new factory-color Welsh Grey paint and a reupholstered Cognac Italian leather interior. It has also been fitted with LED lighting and Land Rover “Wolf” wheels mounted with BFGoodrich KM3 mud-terrain tires. Power comes from a 2.5L 200TDi inline-4 mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, a dual-range transfer case, and a locking center differential. Showing just over 1k miles traveled since the restoration, this 1991 Defender is now being offered at auction by its seller out of Wisconsin.

The exterior came factory-painted in Welsh Grey (LRC008) and was completely refinished during the restoration in Italy. Equipment includes a white top with Alpine windows, front and rear steel bumpers, fender vents, a full-sized spare mounted to the cargo door, mudflaps, and upgraded LED lighting for the headlight low and high beam. The seller reports some rock chips on the front end, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. A set of 16” Land Rover “Wolf” steel wheels have been painted matched to the body and mounted with BFGoodrich KM3 mud-terrain tires.

The interior has been completely reupholstered in Cognac Brown Italian leather with a quilted pattern on the center storage cubby, seat centers, and door panels. New tan carpeting has also been fitted along with a matching headliner. Other details include Land Rover badges embossed into the seats, a hidden Bluetooth stereo head unit, a locking cubby box with integrated cupholders, VDO instrumentation, and black floormats. The seller notes some wear to the shift knob.

This Defender is powered by a 2.5L 200TDi turbodiesel inline four-cylinder engine rated at 109 HP and 188 lb.-ft of torque. All four wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transmission, a dual-range transfer case, and a locking center differential. Upon importation, this Defender received an oil service, new brakes, a throttle helper spring replacement, and an A/C drive belt adjustment as well as replacements of the hydraulic slave cylinder, front drive shaft yoke, and fuel pump gasket.

This sale will include some maintenance records and a clean title.

@Autohandler cool! I follow them on IG, love their no-bling builds.

  • mad_max (registered bidder) 1 year, 9 monthsago

@Autohandler that’s great. For anyone bidding, a build like this from Brooklyn Coachworks costs about $120k. I personally think that’s a little too much for this level of restoration and the engine and running gear seems almost un-touched. But their cosmetic and leatherwork seems to be really good. So this might be a good chance for someone to get a decent truck at a nice price! BTW I have no skin in the game. I’m just a Defender enthusiast and some of you may know me from the other auction site and Defender forums. GL to both seller and bidders!

@PCARMARKET The most recent purchase agreement from the sale in 2021 has been uploaded for review. I most recently sold for close to $120,000. So it will certainly be a huge value here for somebody

This looks like a Brooklyn coachworks build, in case anyone wants to find the history of the truck.

  • mad_max (registered bidder) 1 year, 9 monthsago

Very similar to the Mid Gray D90 I sold on the other auction site. For a moment I thought it was the same truck!

  • Classicdreams (registered bidder) 1 year, 9 monthsago

@tegwj You do have to file EPA and DOT but they are exempt from the regulations. As there was a comment about the vehicle not having side markers. It would be exempt from that.

  • tegwj (registered bidder) 1 year, 9 monthsago

@Classicdreams Not exactly. It is exempt from requiring any modifications at time of import but there is still EPA and DOT and US customs paperwork generated when it enters the country. That is meant to accompany the car if there is ever any question about its status. Land Rovers are slightly higher risk for that due to some high profile cases that resulted in many trucks being impounded and crushed due to fraud by the importers. So dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s is good practice.

  • Classicdreams (registered bidder) 1 year, 9 monthsago

@bootsy1968 The car is over 25 years old therefore exempt from epa and dot. Perfectly legal.

@tegwj I do have concerne about the DOT and legal inspection . It looks like the VIN# is off by one letter. The "A" stand for the regular cab 2/3 seats in the front ( center box or center jump seat). But this model has the bench seat in the back and this makes it a 6/7 person. This means , it should have the letter "B"and be a Station Wagon. Something is not wright. Also DOT would not pass it because of the lack of side marker. American 110/90 Land Rover were different from the European version. Head light, tail lights, Markers, reflector. This to me does not look legit and if the Feds/Custom get their hands on it and do a search, they might just crush it (by law). This Vin# should exist on the European Land Rover, It should be possible to get more info. Just wondering.

@tegwj that was not supplied. We do have copies of the previous Valid titles, from New Jersey and Wisconsin, and it is currently legally licensed and titles in the state of Wisconsin. In our many years experience as a dealer this is all you will need to be issued new registration and title in your state of residence.

Do you have the DOT/EPA paperwork from the import showing it’s all correct and recorded?

  • Autohandler (seller) 1 year, 9 monthsago

@bootsy1968 Yes it’s completely Road legal for the United States, it has been license entitled in the state of Wisconsin most recently. There is no issue here. I’m sorry it’s against Pcar market policy to share with a reserve is.

    Question:
Is it road legal for the USA?
    I don't see side markers?
Can it be insured in the USA
    What is the reserve price
Has it been register before and driven on the road in the USA
mileage before restoration and water restoration ?

@Aquaboy2u the motor and transmission were not rebuilt when this vehicle went through its restoration, unfortunately when we received it in there was not any accompanied documentation or photos of the restoration. We have documentation for the work that we did to button things up as well as some maintenance receipts from the prior owner. It was purchased from GasWerks garage about two years ago I believe. I have checked with them and they were not able to offer any supporting documentation/photos

  • Autohandler (seller) 1 year, 9 monthsago

@tegwj thank you for your questions. To confirm yes all electronics works well and we’re gone through in this restoration, all instruments work and are new, air conditioning lows ice cold clutch is in good condition. We did have to replace the the slave as it failed. I’ve seen this happen on other examples, it’s a simple repair. The suspension ie shocks/springs etc are also new and in good condition. This is not a complete power train/chassis restoration. Rather a donor rolling chassis was cleaned up and refreshed and used. All body interior electrical, instrumentation suspension brakes wheels tires are all new and in like new operating condition.

  • Aquaboy2u (registered bidder) 1 year, 9 monthsago

    Were, no we’re

  • Aquaboy2u (registered bidder) 1 year, 9 monthsago

We’re the engine and transmission rebuilt during the restoration? Any paperwork or photos to confirm what all was done during the restoration? Thanks!

  • tegwj (registered bidder) 1 year, 9 monthsago

@autohandler ok thank you, I had seen a reference to ~149lb-ft for the 200 but perhaps that was itself an error and in reference to the older 2.25l diesel. Some other questions on the refurbishment please:
    1) what suspension components are on the vehicle? (shocks, springs)
    2) please confirm *all* the electrical accessories are functional (even the little things -- dome lights, bulbs in the dash cluster, etc?)
    3) given how recently the restoration was done, the list of things required upon importing the vehicle is surprising. Any idea why the restoration work hadn't already addressed them?
    4) condition of clutch and related components?
    5) How well does the A/C work?

    Many thanks!

@tegwj-thank you for your interest and question if you look at the engine bay photos it can be confirmed that it is a 200TDi by looking at belts. According to several sources the 200TDi torque spec is accurate in this listing

  • tegwj (registered bidder) 1 year, 9 monthsago

Can you confirm that torque spec? Sounds more like a Tdi 300 than a 200.
