Designed and built in collaboration with Porsche, the Mercedes-Benz W124 500E/E500 uses a 5.0-liter V8 engine from the SL-Class roadster along with supporting chassis and performance upgrades culminating in one of the greatest sports sedans of all time. This 1994 example was delivered new by Wetzel Motor Works of Pittsburg, PA, and acquired by its second owner in 2003 who drove the car for the next 13 years while overseeing routine maintenance at a local Mercedes-Benz dealer. The car changed hands once more before joining a Mercedes-Benz collection in November of 2022 with the goal of entering Cars & Caffeine at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. Having remained in the hands of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche enthusiasts its entire life while retaining a thoroughly documented maintenance history, this sought-after 500E is now being offered for auction with just under 132k miles on the odometer.

Each 500E, or E500 as it was named after 1994, was hand-assembled by Porsche at Zuffenhausen during a highly specialized 18-day production process. Compared to the standard W124 models, it could be distinguished by its wider stance, flared fenders, side skirts, and front air dam. The 1994 model also received cosmetic updates along with the rest of the E-Class model range including a new trunk lid, front grille, and headlamps.

This example is finished in Black (040U) and rides on genuine NOS 18” AMG monoblock wheels dressed in new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. The seller states the original wheels are included with the sale and the hood was refinished in 2018 to address some imperfections along with the replacement of the hood insulation pad and headlamp washer nozzles. Some very minor rock chips are also noted on the lower portion of the front bumper as well as a crack in the upper left corner of the rear windshield. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The Anthracite black leather interior includes a unique 4-passenger configuration with individual Recaro sports seats. The cabin is accented by burred walnut wood trim and features heated electrically adjustable front seats with memory, an electric rear window blind, an electric sliding sunroof, and an updated Blaupunkt Frankfurt stereo with Bluetooth. The seller notes the original AM/FM stereo is included and some leather distortion is present on the door map pockets.

This E500 is powered by a 5.0-liter M119 32-valve DOHC V8 engine producing up to 322 HP and 354 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 4-speed automatic transmission. As a 1994 model, this example benefits from larger factory disc brakes borrowed from the R129 SL600 roadster. The second caregiver of this vehicle purchased it from the original owner in 2003 and after about a year into his ownership he drove the vehicle at speed over a flooded section of the road, causing the vehicle to stall initially. After this incident, the owner drove the vehicle to the Mercedes-Benz dealership and complained of a ticking noise coming from the engine. At the client's request, the Mercedes-Benz dealership replaced the entire engine with a new crate motor per warranty. The final warranty invoice on October 19th of 2004 added up to $19,221.51 and the car had 61,444 miles at the time. In addition to receiving a new engine from Mercedes-Benz of Cary, NC it also received new hoses, filters, MASS sensors, belts, engine mounts, new wiring harnesses, power steering service, transmission service, and more.

This sale will include the original owner’s manuals, a window sticker, a toolkit, a spare tire, a car cover, a set of four keys, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know:Welcome to my auction, I am proud to present this beautiful Mercedes-Benz E500 for your consideration. Do not let the approximately 4,500 annual miles per year fool you. This 29-year-old Autobahn stormer has been cherished by Mercedes and Porsche enthusiasts and as a result, it looks and drives better than most cars with a fifth of the mileage. Those familiar with the famous "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" know that meticulous ownership and documented services make all the difference between acquiring an appreciating classic or throwing money into a bottomless pit. This is a prime example of the former. And it comes with 29 years of service records and ownership history to prove it. Everything looks, feels, and works as intended; and saving for minor imperfections consistent with cared-for classic (see general description and photos), this appreciating slice of Mercedes and Porsche history is ready to drive or show at your local Cars & Coffee. Thank you again for considering this amazing machine for your collection, good luck bidding!”

@Tuttebenne Nothing wrong with having TWO 040 Black Mercedes! I have four 040-Black AMGs in storage and love seeing them side by side :)

Thank you for the thoughtful accolades!

  • EnzosDad (seller) 1 yearago

@Archer1 Thank you for the gracious assessment; this is top-two of the nicest 500E/E500s I have seen. While my cellphone pictures may be adequate, this E500 looks better in person. Yet it's the way it drives, documentation and the feel of its factory surfaces that distinguish it from others I have seen.

To answer your question, we are fanatical about Mercedes-AMG. We are also NOT rich, so must sell great cars to drive more great cars.

A little more history on how this E500 came to us:

I had known this car for years and at some point, I asked the Mercedes tech to call me if its owner, a German expat with top Mercedes and Porsches in his climate-controlled garages, ever thought of selling.

Fast-forward to 2022, we were daydreaming about bringing a proper 500E/E500 to represent the brand at the 2023 The Amelia weekend. Something worthy of the Ritz Carlton's main field during the Cars & Caffeine display.

We looked for months, passing on a few tired examples. And out-of-the-blue we received THE CALL; right around registration time for The Amelia. Went to see the car and bought it on the spot; easy to do when you've known the car and its history for so long.

Despite of being registered at the last minute, event organizers accepted the E500 and it was displayed next to my CLK63 AMG Black Series; the one next to it on those pics. Both "040 Black" Mercedes parked next to the official Rolls Royce booth :)

    Cheers!

@EnzosDad (seller)- Such a beautiful and well kept E500 , why would you be selling so quickly?

  • Tuttebenne 1 yearago

Beautiful example, well presented. So many were painted metallic black but this color , 040, is the classic color to have one in. Those drizzle flippers on the headlights look limp and are driving my OCD batty. But an 8mm socket and five minutes will have them both positioned perfectly. Wish I could justify having another in 040 but things might get confusing. :) GLWTA

Saw this car again ! It was at the Porsche cars and coffee in Fort Myers FL this morning. What a gem! The Porsche guys were all over it. I followed it out of the show and the photographs really don’t do it justice. The morning sun off of that black finish was almost blinding!

  • mpiedrahit (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

Excellent example of a well taken care of E500

  • EnzosDad (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

IMPORTANT: In-person inspections or video calls are most welcomed and encouraged. Monday and Tuesday morning are already booked. This auction ends on Tuesday afternoon, so now it's the time to message me if you want to see this E500 in person (or send someone on your behalf) over the weekend. Do not wait until the last minute.

Thanks to those who have placed their bids so far.

So this is the one that I saw at “the Amelia”! I have a great photo of it after the rain. It certainly was the star of the show, standing proudly out front, and sometimes it was difficult to get a picture of it, because of the appreciative crowds!

@EnzosDad Thanks. Do you have "those ... SLK wheels" for sale"? The car should do well with or without them.

    Cheers,

  • EnzosDad (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@maw1124 Those are SLK wheels. The car comes with NOS monoblock set, as well as the factory as pictured.

  • maw1124 1 year, 1 monthago

@EnzosDad I was thinking of these, which were on the car when it was for sale previously. I believe it was at Prestige Motors in Ft. Myers with these wheels.

  • Jimbo1907 (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

@EnzosDad , that makes total sense. The owner was fortunate, considering what it cost to put a new MB crate motor in the car. It also enhances its value now.

  • EnzosDad (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@Jimbo1907 Documents seem to show it was an extended warranty.

    Good morning Pcarmarket enthusiasts!

Thank you for all the interest in the early hours of this auction. Several people have asked about recent service of this E500, so here it is:

    - Oil/filter service.
    - New distributor rotor & cap.
    - New brake pads all around.
    - Brake fluid flush.
    - Differential fluid service.
    - Transmission fluid service.
    - New rear accumulators.
    - NOS AMG Monoblocks fitted with new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S all around (factory wheels included with sale)
    - New Bluetooth-capable Blaupunkt Frankfurt stereo (factory stereo included with sale), and more.

Receipts for the above included with sale. Only OEM parts used.

In fact, there are receipts for every service performed since the first oil change at 1,432 miles in April 27, 1994. Twenty-Nine years of Mercedes dealership maintenance and ownership records.

Accordingly, this E500 looks and drives as intended, completing a 679-mile roundtrip without a hiccup three weeks ago after being selected to represent the brand at The Amelia's Cars & Caffeine main show field.

Superb cosmetic and mechanical condition, whether on display at the Amelia Island Ritz Carlton, or driving across the country.

Thank you again and good luck bidding!
