1994 Porsche 968 Cabriolet Speed Yellow

It is our pleasure to offer this 1994 Porsche 968 Cabriolet. This example, 1 of only 10 Speed Yellow Cabriolets built for North America, came well-equipped from the factory with a limited-slip differential and its history of ownership has been thoroughly documented. Today, RS840526 is extremely well-preserved and is now being offered for auction with just over 61k miles on the odometer by its seller in New Hampshire accompanied by a clean title, CARFAX report, and extensive historical records including images of the vehicle on the dealership grounds.

The rare Speed Yellow (L12G) finish is reported to be in great overall condition and the seller describes the car to be free of any cosmetic imperfections (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery). Inspection of the vehicle and its records are also said to suggest the paint to be original throughout. The factory Cup 2 wheels have been retained and come dressed in staggered Michelin Pilot Sport tires.

The Black partial leather interior remains in excellent condition with only very slight patina. A set of custom fit covers are said to have preserved the front seats. The dashboard is free of any cracks or discoloration, and the seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be working properly including the air conditioning system and cabriolet top. The original cassette radio has been removed but will also be included in the sale. This particular example, a true 1994 with updated features such as 993-styled seats, is incredibly well-equipped with factory options including:

  • Partial Leather Seats in Black
  • Dual Heated Seats
  • Limited Slip Differential
  • 17” Cup 2 Wheels
  • Full 8-Way Power-Operated Seats
  • Hi-Fi Sound System with 8 Speakers and Amplifier

This 968 is equipped with its factory 3.0 L inline 4-cylinder engine paired with a 6-speed G44 manual transaxle featuring an optional limited-slip differential. A 968’s power train includes the “VarioCam” variable valve timing system (a first for road-going Porsches), newly-optimized induction and exhaust systems, a dual-mass flywheel, and updated engine management electronics compared with the outgoing 944. This car is said to have been kept in excellent running order in a temperature-regulated/heated garage in New Hampshire and service records are provided in the photo gallery.

This sale will include a set of keys, custom seat covers, service records from new, sales records from new, a window sticker, books, tools, an air compressor, cabriolet keys, factory tequipment leather mirror covers, an extremely rare set of factory seat covers for use during routine maintenance by a dealership, cabriolet boot bag and its original tire changing bag and gloves. For any Porsche enthusiast looking for a fine transaxle car, your search ends here.

did we get an answer on whether the yellow seat insert is permanent?

  • bibit (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

Hi All! I’ve asked PCAR to upload more images. I took the cover off the passenger seat today so you may have a closer look. Yes, the power switch for the seat has been replaced and the seat now works (see invoice).

@notsofast thanks! You must have Speed Yellow Cab 1?

@PaulLittell I’m delighted to hear this! The large denim object is a rather unusual factory seat cover- it has been with the car since new. To my knowledge and with the help of some collectors and historians, these covers would be used during routine maintenance at the dealership. They are really well-made but I haven’t ever seen another set so I can’t really validate them.

Jeff Coe at the 968Registry advised that the water pump was improved on the 968 and in need of changing every 100k miles, and to change it during every other timing belt change. There is no sign of seepage or whine from the bearing in the water pump today.

The car to my memory has never had a clear bra. The paint is flawless and original throughout. We had a technician give her a very thorough detail at the end of the 2017 season. We ordered a bottle of touchup paint at that time to keep with the car as we thought every car should have one. The technician recommended touching up two small spots on the lower valance panel. We agreed for the spots were very very small. You can see this in images 7 & 8.

We’ve treated our 968 as a piece of artwork. We keep it preserved and original and are very cautious with our usage.

    Hi bibit,
Thanks for bringing such a lovely 968. I’ve been waiting for this one.
I echo a lot of the comments, concerns and questions from earlier, particularly as regards the timing belt.
I have a couple of questions to add.
May we see both seats without covers and both covers?
What is the large denim object in #37-39?
When was the water pump last changed? [Should this be part of the immediate timing belt replacement?]
May we see close-ups of the hand touch-ups?
Has the car ever had a clear bra on the nose?
    Many thanks

There is a good resource for 968 cabriolets here, http://968register.org/production-data/speed-yellow-968s/. This is listed as the second to come in the series of 10 speed yellow cabs. I proudly own one them and enjoy the handling immensely on Colorado mountain roads. I drive it in all seasons, and there may be nothing better than a top down drive on a sunny winter day. These are great handling cars. The one for sale here looks absolutely fabulous.

@bibit thanks for the follow up.
I was unaware of that 25 year alternating yearly inspection. I sold my '94 E320 cab last spring so I had been inspecting it yearly unaware it was going to change going forward.
Also, thanks for posting the Carfax, and the offer to potentially inspect the car under the prescribed conditions. I don't think that is necessary. Seems like a well cared for 968.

  • bibit (seller) 1 month, 2 weeksago

Hi @manuals4ever, thanks for writing! The sticker itself is expired but the inspection is up to date- it was last done in September and now that the car is over 25 years of age, we need only to inspect the car every other year.

We absolutely recommend DTM. Their entire staff is professional and well-versed.

I just spoke to PCAR and they’ve added the CARFAX. PCAR also added images of the trophies we've received over the years at various concours events! We don't go to many but when we do, people are always enamored by the car.

Yes the car can be made available for inspection so as long as a shop collects it in an enclosed carrier. The car has never ever been out in the winter and stays in a temperature regulated environment during the cold months. Taking photos of her in our driveway was the first time in our ownership we had her outside during winter!!

Hello @bibit good looking 968 you have there from a fellow New Hampshirite. A couple of questions...
1- the inspection sticker expired 8/31/2019, has the car not been driven since then?
2- I see receipts for Precision Imports and DTM Autowerks . I am familiar with PI, but not DTM. Looks like the more recent work was done by DTM, would you recommend them for Porsche service?
3- in the write up it mentions a Carfax, but I do not see one. Am I missing it?
4- Is the car available for inspection?

  • Spokayman (registered bidder) 1 month, 2 weeksago

Yes, timing and balance shaft belts are recommended to be replaced every 4-6 years and 40-60K miles.
So the belts on this car have aged out unless they were replaced more recently than the 2013 receipt shows.
It’s a $1500-$2500 job depending upon where it’s done and what else is addressed while you’re in there.
It’s just normal maintenance and this shouldn’t discourage anyone one bit.
Speed Yellow 968s are a very desirable collectible and I know that many 968 aficionados will be watching to see the bidding results.

Hi @ Stryker144 thanks for commenting. The pinion gear was sorted as part of the transmission repair in fall 1999. It's the passenger seat that was without power. It turned out to be a faulty switch and it was exchanged, see image 75. We last exchanged tires in late summer, 2017.

If anything needed to be done on the car, it got done. Taking photographs of her in the driveway was the first time it had ever been taken it out in the winter.

  • Spokayman (registered bidder) 1 month, 2 weeksago

These engines do have a timing belt and therefore it is a wear item needing to be changed regularly to avoid valve and piston damage.
The receipts indicate that this car needs a belt service as the last such service was about 8 years ago.
The 968 engine also has a cam chain (from one camshaft to the other) that is typically good to around 100,000 miles. It’s the chain tensioner that is susceptible to wearing out.

  • Stryker14 1 month, 2 weeksago

I'm also curious if the common pinion gear whine issue on 968s was taken care of when the transmission was worked on at 20k miles?

  • Stryker14 1 month, 2 weeksago

Interesting car in an unusual and fabulous color! I'm confused on the seats, so I can see the passenger side has a yellow insert but the drivers side does not. Is the yellowfins the seat cover that is removable?

I also see a repair receipt where the drivers side power does not work and the owner asked the repair shop to just put it in a good position and not repair the electrics. So does the power seat work now?

Also intersting that the transmission had major repairs at 20k.

I see a receipt for tires in 2013. Are those still the tires on the vehicle or have they bee replaced since then?

I'd love to see a driving video and also some close ups of the paint touch up areas.

  • WarBonnetPres (registered bidder) 1 month, 2 weeksago

It's a timing chain with cam followers. It's a $1000 job in most independent shops give or take. Regardless of records, the car looks great and I would encourage anyone not familiar with 968s to read unbiased literature or ask their local shop. Forum talk usually represents the unhappy or unfortunate few so talk to the experts sir.
