This final-year 1995 Mercedes-Benz W124 Wagon was originally sold in Japan where it became one of only 170 examples upgraded to E36 AMG specifications. It features an AMG-built M104 3.6-liter straight-six engine, an AMG exterior aero kit, 17” AMG two-piece wheels, an AMG-branded instrument cluster, and stainless-steel AMG-logo door sills. After spending time in Germany, the car was imported to the United States in 2020 and was recently serviced including an overhaul of the transmission. This extremely rare pre-merger AMG wagon is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.
Finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic, this W124 features an AMG aero kit including revised bumpers, side skirts, and integrated front fog lights. It rides on 17” AMG Aero II Monoblock wheels dressed in Kumho tires (3720). Other equipment includes a chrome-trimmed grille and door handles, headlamp wipers, roof rails, a rear window wiper, an electric antenna, and black wheel arch flares. The seller indicates the tailgate has been refinished and the body presents very well with straight lines and even gaps all around. All original glass is also said to remain in place. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
Inside, this E36 AMG features a black leather interior decorated with burl wood veneers. Accessories include automatic climate control, cruise control, heated and power-adjustable front sport seats, power windows and mirrors, an electric sunroof, a stereo system, stainless-steel AMG door sills, an AMG-branded instrument cluster, and optional rear-facing third-row jump seats. The seller describes the cabin to be in excellent condition with only a small blemish noted on the driver’s side D-pillar frame. The seller adds that the car's mileage is undocumented and the accompanying Florida title is mileage-exempt.
This W124 is equipped with an AMG-built M104 straight-six engine featuring a 3.6-liter displacement, an enlarged plenum, and an original output of 280 HP. The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. The seller states that the engine block is correctly stamped by AMG and documentation shows the car previously registered in Germany as an E36 AMG with 3600cc engine displacement. Recent service reportedly includes fresh fluid and an overhaul of the transmission due to contamination in the fluid. Invoices are provided for reference in the galley.

The seller would like you to know: “Documented Authentic E36 AMG / Major services just performed and low mileage shown. Originally a Japan market car, exported to Germany, this car was subsequently equipped with pre-merger AMG upgrades. 1995 is the last year for the chassis 124 Estate making this car a very rare find. It was imported to the US in 2020. It is believed that around 170 units of the 124 Estate were upgraded to E36, of which according to reliable sources in Japan, only 30 were completed in 1995. The body is finished in factory Brilliant Silver Metallic which presents very well with straight lines and even gaps all around. All original glass is also present all around the car. The black leather interior is also in great shape, the headliner is in perfect condition, and the seats and carpeting feel soft to the touch. A small blemish can be seen on the driver-side D pillar frame, but the rest shows in great shape. The interior features also the optional rear-facing third-row jump seat. 276 HP AMG 3.6 engine features the impossible-to-find enlarged plenum identified with "3.6" as well as the correct stamp on the engine block showing authenticity. This Bio Harness been used until 1996 - so could be this baby is affected from it or not cuz it gets a engine swap and maybe AMG use other harness. Regarding the rims - wich looks still odd and ugly to me (1st thing i would change) they wear according to the german registration paper a 124 partnumber. AMG numbers alkways start with HWA. Also car never have 12K KMs - otherwise it should appear like new. Acoording to lastvin com this car been delivered as ordinary 320. My guess is car got Odo swapped to a AMG Odo when they modified the car in JP. But dont think car made more than 100K miles cuz state is not pristine but for a wagon very nice. See seat- and steering wheel wear.

@RonSusser For MY 95, they stop using soy as the main material for the wire coating (yes, soy). It doesn't seem that this car has a deteriorated harness and with the age and mileage, If there was ever any issue had to be corrected already through the life of the car

@Igor964 The were available in Germany and the US as well. Most common use was on S600 AMG (W and C140) and S124 Wagons. I have seen them on 3.4 Baby Hammers as well

To answer your questions, this car was done in period in Japan, not afterwards. Car sports an AMG Japan plate on the door frame, including VIN, Commission number and order number. It is made in the correct material and fonts.
Please also note on the documents, the copy of the German registration stating the model as E36 AMG. Germans are very strict about paperwork.
I sent @PCarmarket new pictures of the following parts as per your request:
1. PU (not fiberglass) AMG-HWA stamps from all AMG parts. I haven't seen any of these dated (without removing a bumper or so, But the AMG Japan plate, I think could answer period and authenticity.
2. Photos of the back face of the AMG Monoblock II wheel with all corresponding marking and stamps, including ET 38 and date stamp 21/92, indicating in my opinion period manufacturing and not new or newer stock.
The wood veneer has the AMG logo embedded in the resin. Fakes or reproductions just have an EBay sticker on them; in my best knowledge I believe it is real.. In my experience, removing almost 30 year old wood from a Mercedes, does more damage than helping. I kindly pass in doing this in the benefit of the condition.
Regarding the odometer, this issue was addressed at the moment of advertising and we never represented the car to be Actual Miles as we ourselves could not verify the level, even the title is Exempt.
This car represents extremely well, even for alleged 300k kilometers. It has a real AMG engine with the correct stamps on the engine block and the enlarged plenum. It is complete, with stamps, markings, AMG branded speedometer and engine. Making this car in 2021 would be impossible and too expensive.
It's not a perfect car, but still the condition speaks volumes... and still is one of a handful E36 made, and a rare occasion to acquire one.

I wonder if the Speedo was replaced when it was imported to the USA in 2020. I could understand 18,000KM over the last 3 years. But that doesn’t change the Japanese milage reported at over 300,000KM.
Another I noticed is the “trip meter” first digit is stuck between 2 digits (showing half of each number above/below the window). I have always been told that numbers not lining up correctly in an odometer is a sign it’s been opened.

Is the front bumper, side lowers and rear bumper poly or are they fiberglass? They should all have part numbers built into their structure. And yes, even the cars that were "AMG Japan" had those as the parts did come from Germany.
These are all things that will help the sale and my future bidding. They are easy to take photos of, like the date codes on the Aero 2 wheels on the car. Thank you again, Christopher
Hello, no response to my question. It would seem that many of the parts came after its life in Japan, is that correct? Will you stand behind the fact that all the interior is factory (I would pull it out to date code)? Is all of the wood factory including the center dash "AMG" part (again I would date code)? There seems to be a few large elephants in the room that really need to be answered.
Also, looking at the trip odometer, the numbers do not look to be moving "when they should". I have real concerns that the gauge cluster has been opened and reset. Getting stuck with a mileage rollback is the kiss of death on the secondary market. I am not pointing fingers, just trying to get some answers.

@AutoAvvocato I have answered all your questions about the correct working order of this vehicle through this channel and over the phone as well. I am preparing cars for the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance at this moment and don't have the ability to do further additional videos on top of the all the ones requested by you before. Have you run any compression tests on the engine or inspected the timing chain and tensioners?
Are there any fluids leaking and how is the head gasket?

@993CupRSR Thanks for the new video. Please confirm radio, antenna, electric mirrors and everything works. We will all be interested in seeing all the wiring harnesses. Sorry to bother you, but I believe you need to also photo the connectors under the battery and ensure no cracking insulation on any of the wiring. Thanks also for explaining this started out as an E320 then engine upgraded by AMG JAPAN (not factory) and body kit added. It appears that suspension, exhaust, steering wheel, and interior are all stock E230 and owner did not opt for those other common AMG upgrades.

@AutoAvvocato I am uploading videos showing the electricals. For the harness, I need to take apart the harness railings to shoot the cables. There are no issues in the electrical functionality; harnesses are a concern in pre-1994 cars, this is not the case.
@993CupRSR Thanks for your time on the phone. As its impossible to get the PPI done in under a day, would you please post video demonstrating all electric seats, windows, locks, sunroof, wipers, signals, horn, radio & antenna working so we can see that EVERYTHING is working. Also helpful to show AC blowing cold if you have thermometer. Also can you show photos of the wiring harnesses upper and lower and confirm whether or not they were replaced as these are a serious concern in the W124 series cars. Thank you.

It would be nice if the seller would post the entire foreign CarFax report and not only 2 pages as well as state the now known mileage and service history of this wagon. I too am interested and would like to bid, but the seller has not replied to my message to call me nor my questions as to what does and does not work. I also request videos be posted demonstrating all windows, sunroof, radio, antenna, gauges, signals etc working since time is running out for a PPI. Please reply to these requests. You are all welcome to perform a PPI which I agree should be in place. I can’t find evidence of any collision damage on the car. If it goes RNM I will keep it; it is still one of 170 made and a rare occasion to actually own one of these. I shall trust the process. Car is in Fort Lauderdale, auction ends tomorrow afternoon, and if any of you want to take a personal look at it and issue an opinion through this channel afterwards, I will be happy to assist.
What would also be useful is a PPI report given the issues.

Independent of @refusedname, I had the same idea to check the Carfax report.
Us Carfax report indicated an invalid VIN (no problem).
So I checked the European Carfax, and got the same report as what is uploaded by the seller, since this car was in Germany. This provide no additional information.
So I checked for a vehicle history report in Japan from carvx.jp. And I can confirm that this report is the same as what @refusedname reported, that on 2016-05-27 the mileage reported was 326,0000.
Also, this report indicates an accident, as well as an odometer rollback issue.
Also, if possible, can I get some photos of the date codes from the back of each wheel? Have the wheels been refinished? That would help quite a bit in trying to figure out the mileage on this wagon. Thank you again.
I love the wagon, I have a S210 E55 4matic. Can we try to get some clarification as to the mileage? 50,000km is not a big deal but if the wagon has seen close to 200,000 miles.....there would be some issue. The wagon looks to be wonderful regardless but hopefully you can clarify a bit. I would help me moving forward with bids. Thank you in advance.

@AutoAvvocato to place a lot at this auction, a copy of the title must be furnished to the auction to verify ownership. Car has a clean Florida title which requires furnishing the import documents to the State. Copies of the import documents reveal or suggest my purchase cost and that information is reserved for my internal use only.
Wow. The odometer reads under 13k yet refusename says it's over 326k from years ago. That is substantial and important. Thanks for sharing... Do you have documents or links to post for the Japan records? I would also like the seller to post copies of US Customs paperwork and title before bidding.

@993CupRSR, I just pulled records from Japan on this car. It had 326,000 km on May 27th of 2016, this explains the transmission issue. I'm glad it was fixed before the auction. I have to say that the car presents very well inspite of km it traveled.
@refusedname Thanks, it is a great looking wagon, I am a huge long roof fan. You can have a defective transmission in a brand new car from the factory, which would be covered under warranty, in this case was repaired. Struts are OEM and springs are all black covered in thick cosmoline, visually comparing to my other stock wagons, they are shorter. Requested pics are being uploaded.
@993CupRSR, please post better pictures of the springs and shocks. I would like to see if the car still retains AMG suspension. Thank you again.

The devil is in the details. On picture #23 you will find something very unique and rare. True AMG cars have two tire pressure decals (one for front tires and one for rears). Sedans and Coupes have these in the luggage compartment under the rear tray and wagons have these on the gas lid. These decals can't be reproduced and add another layer of authenticity to this car. These are very delicate and fade away with time and weather, being possibly also another evidence of low mileage. Though it is something interesting to look at.
@Hobbsm3 Miles could possibly be real, just don't have paperwork for them. Look at the pictures and you will see brilliant plating on the engine hardware and an overall excellent condition. High mile W124 Benzes usually don't present this well.

@GarageGuy the record for the repair is what is furnished in the pictures, no further detail. Car runs great, has the expected power level, transmission shifts through out the range, and also on kick down. Windows, seats, A/C, sunroof, even the tailgate soft close works. It’s factory radio has Japanese FM range, so if you need music, and don’t have a cassette with a nice driving mix, you should look into getting a US spec MB radio which is a direct replacement.
If you win the auction, I’ll look for the box of the old tranny parts and if I still have it, I’ll give it to you ;)

@GarageGuy internals of the transmission were replaced (discs and other). I received a box with old parts from this repair with this car. Good luck bidding!
Can seller please explain how transmission was ultimately fixed? Documentation doesn't seem to show conclusive evidence of final repair, only signature of release for Auto Critic to release the vehicle.
