Up for auction is this 2001 Porsche 996 Carrera 4 Coupe finished in Black over a black and Savanna Beige interior.  Offering all-wheel-drive performance, this Carrera 4 also came factory equipped with a Sport Chassis (030), a three-spoke leather steering wheel, the Advanced Technic Package, a 6-speed manual transmission, and several options from Porsche’s Exclusive Department including flared rocker panels, 18” Sport Design wheels, and Porsche crested headrests.  This 2001 example is said to have remained under the care of the same family from new and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California while showing just over 13k miles on the odometer.

This Carrera 4 is finished in Black and sports Exclusive GT3-style flared rocker panels along with 18” Sport Design wheels which feature colored Porsche center crests.  The Vredestein tires are dated from 2010 and the seller notes only one minor scratch on the right front fender which has been touched up.  Additional images are provided in the photo gallery along with a CARFAX report.

Inside, this 996 is appointed with a black and Savanna Beige interior featuring partial leather seats, an Alcantara headliner, a three-spoke leather steering wheel, and Exclusive Porsche crested headrests.  The optional Advanced Technic Package also includes Bi-Xenon headlights, high-pressure headlamp washers, a Hi-Fi sound system, and a 6-disc CD changer.  The cabin is described to have been very well kept with the original Porsche CR-220 radio remaining in place.

This first-generation 996 is equipped with a naturally aspirated 3.4L flat-six engine that sends as much as 296 HP and 258 lb.-ft of torque to all four wheels through a desirable 6-speed manual transmission.  The factory optional Sport Chassis (030) is equipped which provides additional rigidity and stiffer handling.  The condition of the brakes is depicted in the photo gallery and the seller reports the car to have been well maintained throughout the years with no outstanding service items noted at this time.  An oil analysis has been recently performed and the car is said to have passed a California smog test, there is no record of an IMS bearing replacement.

This sale will include a spare tire, toolkit, jack, the original window sticker, and a clean title.  With its impressive low mileage, 6-speed manual gearbox, and desirable factory options, this Carrera 4 may very well be the 996 you have been searching for.

    Somewhat puzzling why with only hours to go this super low miles C4’s bid is sluggish. Yes it’s not a C4S but has the same power plant (sans X51). Yes it has all wheel drive making it harder to drift around corners, big deal. The fact that the king dealership of super low miles classic Porsches is bidding should give all the go ahead.

    Excellent presentation by the seller! My barn is full so good luck and hopefully this one doesn’t slip away without a struggle.

    Folks, I replaced the side markers with Factory Clear ones, they look so much better, I've asked Pcarmarket to post new pictures so hopefully they'll post before auction end tomorrow.

    As mentioned on the window sticker this car has the Special Chassis Rigidity Tuned Pk, you can totally tell when going around turns, less roll in the body, nice addition on a AWD 911, you can dig into corners better.

    @CARS458 Gotcha… thanks for the prompt reply. I am bidding!

  • CARS458 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @jccaro just Double checked the window sticker, the AB code is for the 3 spoke Leather steering wheel. I noticed the window sticker copy on this listing is blurry, I'll get a new clear copy uploaded.

  • CARS458 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @jccaro car doesn't have leather stiching Airbag cover for sure, not listed in the window sticker either. if an Airbag was replaced under a re-call it would have been replaced with the same part. The steering is the 3 spoke leather with stiching . Hope that info helps.

  • jccaro (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    The options list the leather AB (which refers to the leather stitched airbag cover) and it is not present on the car. Do you know if and when the airbag was replaced and why the original leather cover was discarded?

    Thanks.

    @Mercyhealth @pcarmarket
    Just wanted to let you know and add to the listing that a set of Brand new (updated) version of these tires is on order and will go on the car in the next couple days. The current tires are great and have 90% life left but date is too old, we'll just toss them and put these Contis on there

    @Mercyhealth Thank you, I'm with you on the IMS, if it was done the new owenr would be more comfortable, but the last car I had IMS done on the shop used a factory replacement part, the buyer wasn't happy becasue he felt the aftermarket parts were better, therefore this time I left it for the new owner to decide.

  • Mercyhealth (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @CARS458 I agree with all your comments. 13k miles with 3-4 oil changes is about right. However you can’t go wrong with extra oil changes especially after the miles start piling up. As far as the IMS mitigation 2 thoughts. First risk management take it or leave it. Secondly in the all wheel drive versions its a bit more tricky and takes more time ($s) than the rear driven C2s.

    Good luck this should do well!

    @wadds1971 Our apologies, there was an error in the listing which has been corrected. There are no reported damages to this car.

  • wadds1971 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @CARS458 - Please reread my questions. It is not the Carfax that seems to be in error, but the description written either by yourself or PCarmarket. The description reads: “Additional images are provided in the photo gallery along with a CARFAX report which shows moderate damage to have occurred to the left front end in 1997.” Obviously, there is some confusion here, as the referenced date of the claimed accident came four years BEFORE your car was built! I was simply asking for a clarification. I also asked a few other questions, which you have not addressed as yet. FYI, I believe the IMS failure rate on these early 996’s was closer to 8-10%, especially if your car had the weakest, smallest single-row IMS bearing, as opposed to the heftier double-row bearing of the very earliest 996’s. It also seems well-accepted that very low-mileage (non-turbo) 911’s of this vintage are more prone to failure due to stagnation of fluids, and weakening of seals due to disuse. You may want to do a bit more research before criticizing the well-meaning comments of those who have shown an interest in bidding on your car. Thanks for any additional answers that you can provide to my previous questions.

    @wadds1971
    the car has had 3-4 oil services any more than that is actually not a good thing.
    13K miles, IMS would not be an issue according to Porsche, they say only 4% of their cars were effected, great PCA video on youtube for it. Oil Analysis was done by a shop for the previous owner at 9K miles, the count for metal shavings was measured below average but I dont have the print out, I hate to get into any arguments over the IMS, so any future owner could use his/her own judgement to change or leave factory IMS, I also didnt want to do it because there are too many options from factory part to aftermarket all the way to IMS delete options and I thought it would be good for the new owner to decdie all that.
    I don't follow the 1997 carfax issue, I think initially the carfax from the wrong car was posted but then corrected with the right VIN.

    @sirhcpark I believe they are the Sport design rims. So yes

  • Mercyhealth (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    Another great presentation of a gen 1 996. Ridiculous low miles and obvious excellent maintenance are here to see. Really love the pictures of the exposed suspension on all 4 corners. Outside of the whole IMS discussion the only thing needed is replacing the 11 yo rubber. This generation represents for me the best daily roller 911. Usable power and a blast to drive without breaking the speed limit while you are still in 3rd.

  • sirhcpark (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    Nice ride. Are those stock wheels? Also, what part of Marin? Would you be open to meeting up in-person?

  • wadds1971 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

    @CARS458 - Nice-looking 996 overall, beautiful wheels, and the low mileage is appealing, too, up to a point. Lack of regular driving does seem to be a worry for these cars as well, insofar as IMS bearing and bore-scoring issues are concerned. Can you provide evidence of regular oil/filter changes and other service over time? Oil analysis reports might be reassuring as well.

    I'm confused about the reference to an accident in 1997, four years before this car was built! The Carfax makes no reference to an accident. Maybe you could clarify this issue?

    Just to verify, this early 996 still does not have an under dash glove box and in-dash cupholders, correct? Any signs of heat/sun damage to interior surfaces, or has the car always been stored inside? Is the headliner intact and in place?

    Thanks for your feedback.
