Now up for auction is this 2003 Porsche 996 Carrera Targa finished in Orient Red Metallic over a Graphite Grey interior. Accounting for only a small portion of total 996 production, the Targa model features a unique sliding glass roof system that provides an open and airy driving experience. This 2003 example was designated as a promotional press vehicle with production code 741, and features optional power-operated heated seats, the Bose High-End Sound Package, Xenon Headlamp Package, and a 6-speed manual gearbox. Currently showing just over 90k miles on the odometer, this rare 996 Targa is being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.
This Targa was ordered in Orient Red Metallic and features a sliding glass roof system with an opening glass rear hatch. The car is believed to have been completely refinished at some point during prior ownership and the seller notes several minor cosmetic imperfections throughout the exterior as well as a dent on the driver’s door. Additional images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. This 996 rides on upgraded 18” Sport Classic II wheels with Pirelli tires.
Inside, this Targa has been appointed with a Graphite Grey standard leather interior featuring heated power-operated seats and the Bose High-End Sound Package. The optional Xenon Headlamp Package is also equipped, and a set of aluminum pedal covers have been installed by a previous owner. The seller reports wear on the driver seat bolster and notes that the cupholder cover is missing. The retractable sunshade for the Targa top is currently nonfunctional and the sliding glass roof itself is said to operate rather slowly.
This 996 is equipped with a naturally aspirated 3.6L flat-six engine rated at 320 HP and 273 lb.-ft of torque. Power is directed to the rear wheels by way of a 6-speed manual transmission. An aftermarket exhaust has been installed and all available maintenance history is provided on CARFAX which shows the rear main seal to have been replaced in 2011 at 45,280 miles. There is no record of an IMS bearing replacement.
This sale will include a clean title. Among the rarest models of the first water-cooled generation, this 6-speed Targa presents an excellent value for any enthusiast in search of a Porsche 996.

I'm a former 996 Targa owner. These are great cars. This price is WAY below market. There is a lot of room to keep bidding.
Also, for any future owners, do NOT lubricate the roof. They are not built to take extra lubrication and you could damage it. They tend to operate slow over time. If it's still working, leave it alone.

@Adoptagreatpet We're a Porsche shop, and we usually go through all the cars that we sell and address as much as we can. As always, we would be willing to work with the buyer to address any of the mechanical needs and/ or preventable work. I.E. The IMS bearing.
As for the roof. I'm sure some grease will improve the speed. In the video you can see and hear that it could benefit from some lubrication. The roof does open and close UNASSITED with no issues.

Have you brought the car to a qualified mechanic to determine what is causing the Targa roof to move slowly. This cold turn into a significant issue. As far as the IMS bearing, it has to be done or your gambling with the engine especially given the mileage. I’m sure this was one of your main concerns when you bought the car. Thank you!

The carfax shows the transmission was replaced early in its life and the clutch at 34,000 miles., otherwise very limited information. Have you looked it over in detail? Is the clutch soft (or very hard)? Any other prep done for the sale on this?
