2003 Porsche 986 Boxster S Race Car

Now up for auction is this 2003 Porsche 986 Boxster S race car finished in Orient Red Metallic.  Purchased by the seller as a stock example in 2016, this 986 was transformed into a highly competitive racer with track-going safety features and upgrades including an adjustable suspension with Bilstein PSS9 dampers and GT3 control arms, a cold-air intake, Schnell headers, a Fabspeed Supercup exhaust, and much more.  It was first raced in 2017 when it won the PCA Stock F National Championship before being raced at only a few more events in 2018 and 2019.  With just over 67k miles showing on the odometer, this 986 is now being offered for auction with a clean title by its seller out of Vermont.

This example is finished in its factory color of Orient Red Metallic, detailed images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX.  Externally, this 986 has been fitted with removable vinyl graphics, a black painted hardtop, and a set of 18" OZ wheels dressed in newer Hoosier H2O tires.

Inside, the cabin has been stripped and converted to a lightweight racing cockpit.  Safety features include a Safety Devices bolt-in cage with welded gussets, an electric kill switch, an OMP fire suppression system, and a Recaro Pro Hans Halo racing seat.  Other additions include a MOMO steering wheel, a Cool Shirt setup, and a transponder.

This Boxster S is equipped with a 3.2 L flat-six engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. Performance upgrades include a deep oil sump with windage tray and Accusump accumulator, stainless steel brake lines, a cold-air intake, Schnell headers, and a Fabspeed Supercup exhaust.  The handling has also been improved with an adjustable suspension featuring GT3 control arms, Tarett sway bars and drop links, newer Bilstein PSS9 dampers, and Swift springs.  Professional oil analyses from Blackstone are included in the photo gallery along with compression test results and a dyno test from September of 2020 which shows 243 HP and 215 lb.-ft of torque at the rear wheels.

This sale will include a clean title. If you are eager to hit the track in a highly competitive mid-engine racer, this nicely equipped 986 Boxster S may just be the one you've been looking for.

@DarkMagic , Hi Steve , Altho you might have overlooked to answer my very first important question
about the "IMS Bearing " upgrade that I originally started my first comment concerned about it, I still like to thank you for getting back to me with all your detailed and honest ifos on the oil analysis and the dyno test results and more on your gorgeous Orient red metallic Porsche Boxster S race car !
Yes, eventhou there are no documents of the oil & Dyno test posted so far, but I genuinely believed you and based on your previous comments that are still available ( from your auction), it's a wonderful race car for what it has to offer from the whole package (the stock engine and tranny and all the great mods that you have puin in it) !
Also thanks for your counter offer, but I'm sorry for rejecting your counter offer as my offer, was already stretched beyond my practical highest bit that I would have normally made !
My intentions or wishful thinking were, to turn this car to a dual purpose car so, I could register it for the road leaga drives from home to the track (while keeping the car basically untouched, but adding windows and the Cat (s), etc.) So, I won't have to Trailer it !
So, these are the reasons why I had to reject your counter offer ( and I'm not saying yours wasn't fare enough) ; Based on my quick calculations, starting with my original and only offer, I would have to pay a 5% premium ($1,100) then ship the car from Vermont to California ( $1700 to $1900), pay a round about # of $2,600 tax & registration in California and then put new cats to pass the California smog test ( hoping that's all it would take to pass the very strict California's smog test rules) and then, last but not least, the door cards, windo glass and all the window parts and hard ware on both doors, we're talking about well over $30,000 car !!!
Thank you and the best of luck to you,
    Efariab

@Efariab I can't figure out how to add PDFs to the listing now, there's no place to click to add more pictures or PDFs.
The report itself says: STEVE: Lead dropped nicely to its lowest level to date, so while it's still a little elevated next to averages, we don't have any serious concerns about the current state of bearing wear. And with the rest of the metals in fine shape, it really does look like this engine is doing well overall. The viscosity is a little low, but that's not a big deal as the fuel dilution that caused it is probably just from normal use. The TBN is still going strong at 4.1, so the oil had plenty of active additive left in reserve. Just have fun out there and check back at the next oil change for comparison.
There were 1600 race miles on the oil.
The dyno sheet is just a bar graph, I can send it to you by email if that's allowed by PCar.
I never had a compression test, never needed one. That is an error in the ad. Sorry about that, I didn't catch it. PCar drafted the ad from a summary that I sent them, I didn't pick up on the reference to a compression test in the text.

@DarkMagic, for some reason , I don't see the "Oil Analyses", compression test results and the Dyno test documents (that are all mentioned in the description by Pcarmarket) in the photo gallery !
Could you please provide those. As well ??
    Thanks.

@DarkMagic, Hi there, I hop you're doing well!
I'm a 35 year PCA veteran/member and early Porsche 911 (air cooled) racer ! I'm intersted your beautiful Boxster, I love the set up and more ! So, I have these questions; A) since I didn't see (unless I missed it) anywhere mentioning about the Infamous and dreaded "IMS" Bearing, so, I thought to ask that dumb question!
    B) Price, would you take less (please see my offer that you should see in the "MAKE OFFER" coming soon !
    Thanks,
    Efariab

@JBoxerGT2 Car weighs about 2,850 pounds.

This car can be street legal in Florida. Add a tag , insurance and go. I've seen more far out hot rods and drift cars on the road and Cars and Coffee events. What is the weight of the car as it sits?

@LVCMLC-Rx It would depend at least in part on what state you're in. At a minimum I would unbolt the cage, put in different seats, door cards, perhaps airbags, cats for exhaust. You'd probably be better off getting a street car and adding some sporty bits. Thank you.

  • LVCMLC-Rx (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

May I ask, as the car stands today, what would you need to add/subtract for you to legally drive the car on public roads?

  • DarkMagic (seller) 4 monthsago

@damebash I don't have any interior parts, sorry. I get rid of that stuff right away so it doesn't pile up.

  • damebash 4 monthsago

Do you happen to have any of the parts that you have removed from the interior of the vehicle?

  • DarkMagic (seller) 4 monthsago

@LVCMLC-Rx In my experience, the 3.2 is super-reliable. My last one got to 125,000 miles, with heavy track time for the last 30,000. The oil reports are clean, the power is good per the dyno, there are no tell-tale issues with smoke or funny noises, so should run well for seasons to come - no guaranty unfortunately - but good history. Never had a transmission issue with a 3.2 six speed. If the motor or trans were to have issues, junk yard replacements are good value and plentiful. Thanks for your interest!

  • LVCMLC-Rx (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

How many seasons/miles should you expect to get out of an engine before a re-build is in order?

  • DarkMagic (seller) 4 monthsago

@badboss I've posted some qualifying and races on YouTube. If you search "Schindler PCA" several will pop up. If you add "Watkins Glen" or "Lime Rock" you should get qualifying at those venues. If the car's passenger mirror is red, it's this car. If you can't see the passenger's mirror or it's black, then it's me in another car. Best times for me in this car at the Glen, 2:09.3; at Lime Rock, 59.4. You can also see races at those and other tracks. Thank you!

  • badboss (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

@DarkMagic can you provide any in car video on track to get a sense of the cars abilities?

  • DarkMagic (seller) 4 monthsago

Welcome to the auction. I'd be happy to answer questions.
