Now up for auction is this 2004 Porsche 996 GT3 3.8L.  Reported by the seller to be one of only 23 examples finished in Basalt Black Metallic, this very unique 996 showcases a flat-six Mezger engine that has been upgraded to a 3.8L displacement by DeMan Motorsports along with some other modifications at a cost of over $32k.  Offering a custom close-ratio 6-speed manual gearbox and an upgraded output of approximately 450 HP, this exceptional 996 GT3 has been previously listed on PCARMARKET and is now being offered by its seller in Missouri while showing just over 20k-miles on the odometer.

The rarely seen Basalt Black Metallic finish is preserved by clear paint protection film applied over the front bumper, hood, fenders, and A-pillars.  Detailed images and paint meter readings are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.  Compared with a standard 996, unique aerodynamic features on the GT3 include a fixed rear wing, flared rocker panels, and a revised front fascia with a lip spoiler. This GT3 is factory optioned with Bi-Xenon headlights, a painted rear model designation, and standard GT3 wheels which are finished in silver and dressed in Michelin Pilot Sport tires.

Inside, this GT3 highlights a nicely appointed Black leather interior with Alcantara upholstery on the shifter and handbrake lever.  A custom thickened three-spoke steering wheel has been installed along with a Rennline pedal set, and the seller confirms all gauges and accessories working properly. This GT3 has also been equipped with the following exclusive facotry options:

  • 446      Wheel Caps with Colored Crest
  • 454      Cruise Control
  • 573      A/C with Full Climate Control
  • CJJ       Belt Outlet B Pillar in Carbon Fiber

  • X71      Aluminum Instrument Dials
  • XSC      Porsche Crest in Headrest
  • XSX      Seat Belts - Guards Red
  • Z0997  Custom Tailoring

The legendary 3.6L flat-six Mezger engine in this GT3 has been upgraded to a 3.8L displacement with 102.7mm pistons and cylinders.  DeMan Motorsports carried out the engine build in 2012 along with re-gearing of the 6-speed manual gearbox at a cost of over $32,000 (invoice provided in the photo gallery). There has been no track use reported and the following upgrades were also installed by DeMan Motorsports providing for a claimed output of approximately 450 HP.

  • Custom ECU Performance Tune
  • DeMan Stainless Steel Headers
  • Fabspeed 200 Cell Sport Cats
  • Fabspeed X-Pipe and Performance Mufflers
  • Fabspeed Carbon Cold Air Intake
  • GT3 RS Lightweight Clutch and Flywheel Assembly

Transmission gearing for close-ratio track use:

  • 3rd: 1.68
  • 4th: 1.375
  • 5th: 1.133
  • 6th: .970

This sale will include owner’s books, the original window sticker, and a clean title.  Offering performance far beyond that of a stock 996 GT3, this thoroughly upgraded 2004 example is an absolute dream come true for any serious driving enthusiast.

    @ksdaoski , @ Robert F. U. Hastings, agree with comments. Very nice car but for this crowd, originality is paramount. Low enough miles to be collectible, enough mods to track the daylights out of her. Tough situation overall.

    @Ksdaoski it has been an interesting 3 months in the used car market. I guess we’ll see in about 30 minutes. 6GT3 prices have soared but I think the engine mods might keep away the purists

    So this hit $81k 5 months ago, RNM.
    Hit $87k 3 months ago in the DT, offer not accepted.
    Asking price on other sites was $98k.
    We'll see if the market is really that much stronger 3 months later....

    @MezgerTT ....
    I did not photo or meter this GT3. PCAR did the honors on that. I have done no paint work or the clear bra, all done before my ownership. So to summarize any guess you may have is as good as mine. I trust they know how to use their paint meter.
    Good luck on your bidding.
    Jim

    @PORSCHE1 @jd-gt350 Thank you for the response. I like the car and I was just curious if you knew where the extra 3 to 4 mil of paint came from on the passenger fender. I didn’t know if you had a scratch touched up or if you held the paint meter less than flush on the panel in the picture as that will throw off readings. Curious if that passenger fender is 14 mil every location. Regarding CarFax, no need to re-read as I’m sure you know paint blown onto a fender due to a scratch or small dent will not show up on CarFax unless a collision, a police report or an insurance claim. Regarding your suggestion that 3-4 mil may have been buffed off the other fender and hood, that’s likely implausible. That said, it would be helpful if would post a few more readings on that fender as maybe you held the meter less than flush and the reading was thrown off. Also, unless I’m mistaken, the paint meter won’t read on the rear wing or the bumper covers as they are non-ferrous. There appears to be a picture of you holding the meter above the wing with a reading. Said would likely be a legacy reading from a ferrous panel, not a reading on the wing. Thanks.

    @Skindoc thanks I already checked Tire Rack 1300 for Ms on all four corners. And I agree no performance driving for me without good slicks.

  • Skindoc (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

    @Mercyhealth I would just factor in a new set of your favorite tires.

    Mine would be Michelin. ?

    On a car of this performance level, I wouldn’t trust tires this old. Of course tires are such a subjective issue. If I were the owner and planned on keeping her in storage with the occasional short drive to shows and coffee, I’m sure these will do. Rollers really.

    My dad pointed out some years ago how many, many show and display cars have full tread old tires because they aren’t driven (trailered) or only driven on special occasions at low speeds and short distances.

    I used to hate it when he was correct, now I call it wisdom. Trying to impart that on my kids lol!

    @MezgerTT ...

    Difficult to determine on a 17 year old car, with multiple owners, built and maintained by humans. Where did the 2 mils. originate? Perhaps a panel overlooked during buffering? All I can suggest is rereading of the car fax.
    I hope yours is the winning bid.

    @jd-gt350

    Great car. Do you know anything about why the passenger fender was repainted? All other panels covered in PPF read 10 - 11 mil which is expected as the film is 6 mil. The pass fender reading 14 mil with PPF appears to have been painted. Curious if know the reason. Thanks.

  • PORSCHE1 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

    @Mercyhealth ...
    Please review the start up video included already. Milage @ previous listing 19993, this listing 20070, as of today 20095 + 25 miles yesterday to and back to PCA SHOW.
    Tires are a testament to MICHELIN quality and proper storage.
    Hoping yours is the winning bid!

  • Mercyhealth (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

    @PORSCHE1 @jd-gt350 what is the actual odometer reading now? From the pictures of the last auction it appears to be unchanged. Also the tires are dated 10-18 years old. Is that correct? Finally any chance of a start up and engine running video?

  • Ksdaoski (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

    Yeah I was trying to understand why there were both 4's and 14's?

  • PORSCHE1 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

    @Ksdaoski ... please check the paint meter readings. Also recall this GT3 was treated to a full clear bra package the very reason no real damage after 20k miles.

    @SamE36 .....
    I do not have any... all are very available from folks who choose to improve their GT3’s. Many times I’ve collected parts, just to have to dispose of them later.

    @PORSCHE1 @jd-gt350 great job not that I have any beefs here but I was somewhat criticized for refurbishing/cleaning the leather of an older car and that I committed some sort of party foul. IMO it looks fabulous and makes this 911 even more desirable. If someone wants to drive around in a worn out car.... you be you. This 996 GT3 is my fantasy car. In Jet Black Metallic no less

  • SamE36 (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

    Do you have the factory parts (Air box, exhaust system)?

    @FLCarNut .....
    I just spent a marvelous morning on cleaning our GT3. This Saturday our local Porsche dealer is sponsoring a PCA club show and luncheon. Many of our members have inquired on the GT3 due to not having seen it recently.... I’m trying to keep the mileage down and have others to exercise. I had just used leather cleaner and polish on the interior. Dylan has some current photos for your review.

    I had a very similarly DeMan modified black '05. It is THE one I shouldn't have sold. A stock 6GT3 is a fantastic driver's car but the additional power and song makes every drive something truly special! Interested to see where this lands as the previous price seems like a bargain in the current market.

  • PORSCHE1 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

    Yes...brownan, it is most likely the most refined 2004 GT3 in existence.
    The best part is, it is ‘the wolf in sheep’s appearance’ the only obvious enhancements are the headers and air intake.
    Jim

  • PORSCHE1 (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

    I do not possess the dyno report from DeMan.
    Their invoice shows 450 H.P. So who is DeMan....check them out here...

    Hi to all...Yes we will again offer this fantastic GT3. The last time on PCAR it neared the reserve but didn’t close, but what it did do is register thousands of views, I assume a record, so interest is high.
