Up for auction is this 2005 Porsche 987 Boxster finished in Basalt Black Metallic over a Black standard leather interior.  Offering naturally aspirated mid-engine performance as well as an engaging 5-speed manual transmission, this 2005 example makes the perfect daily sports car for any aspiring Porsche owner.  Having undergone a major engine-out service at an authorized Porsche dealership within the last 6k miles which included an IMS bearing upgrade and new clutch, this 987 is now being offered in excellent driving condition by its seller in New Jersey showing approximately 30k miles on the odometer.

The Basalt Black Metallic finish is said to be in great overall condition with the exception of some imperfections on the rear trunk lid (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  Clear side marker lenses have been installed and the side air intake grilles have been painted black.  Other modifications include Boxster S dual exhaust tips, a rear model designation delete and LED bulbs for the low beams.  This example rides on factory optional 18” Boxster S wheels which are currently dressed in healthy Continental DWS Extreme Contact tires.

Inside, the Black standard leather interior is shown to be in very nice condition with only minor wear exhibited on the seat cushions.  The audio control knobs have been replaced with OEM pieces, although the climate control knobs are said to be worn.  Some convertible top parts have been replaced to maintain proper working order and the seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be fully functional.  The original $48,890 window sticker also includes heated front seats, Sound Package Plus and automatic climate control.

A naturally aspirated mid-mounted 2.7 L flat-six engine sends approximately 240 HP to the rear wheels by way of a desirable 5-speed manual gearbox. 0-60 is achieved in approximately 6 seconds while reaching a top speed of over 150 MPH.  Following an engine failure under previous ownership in 2019, this 987 was brought to an authorized Porsche dealership where a comprehensive engine-out overhaul was performed at a cost of over $11k.  During this time the IMS bearing was upgraded along with the installation of a new clutch (invoices are provided in the photo gallery).  With approximately 6k miles driven on the refurbished engine, this 987 is just waiting to be enjoyed.

This sale will include a set of 2 keys, service records, owner’s manuals and the original tools.  If you are in search of a stick-shift 987 Boxster, this 2005 example makes an excellent choice.

    Hi all, a small gift to the buyer - I will also include a 'Boxster' emblem (in titanium) with the sale I bought it from Pelican parts some time (I can't add links here, sorry), but never had a chance to install it. Good luck with the bidding!

    @twallc4 No, no oil leaks. It was recently serviced, and nothing was reported to me. I keep it in the garage, and never saw any oil drops on the floor either.

  • twallc4 (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

    Any oil leaks of any kind coming from the engine?

    @flashnine1974 There are 2 reasons.
    First, a friend of mine left for London for work for a year or so. He left me his and his wife’s cars, so now I have 4 - simply too many cars (the Boxster still gets its spot in the garage!)
    Second, we are moving to Poconos (PA), and I don’t know how easy it will be to maintain it here - I don’t wanna go to a random shop for service. Although I have to admit, there is plenty of beautiful twisty roads in PA.

  • flashnine1974 (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

    Why is it that you want to sell.

  • ikromanov (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

    Hi all, I tried to find out any information about the installed engine, but no luck. At Porsche of Conschohoken they told me the engine was provided by an aftermarket warranty company, and I don't even know what that company was.

  • rotarychainsaw (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

    @flashnine1974 I agree. This feels a bit risky with gaps in the history. I guess if seller has the reserve low enough a roll of the dice might be worth it.

  • flashnine1974 (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

    Can't believe the previous owner could not remember how many miles were on the engine. So my understanding is buying this car is a big risk.

  • WRENCH.56 (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

    @ikromanov Yes, you did. Thanks much.

  • ikromanov (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

    @WRENCH.56 Thank you!
    You are absolutely correct about the engine replacement. Being the third owner, unfortunately I don't have much details besides what I saw in the receipt myself. I know it is a 2.7 - I changed oil on it, so it must be from another Boxster/Cayman (I don't think 2.7 were ever installed on 911s). I also know the IMS did go into the used engine, I just confirmed it with the previous owner. He couldn't remember how many miles were on that engine though.

    Regarding other parts - everything you see on the receipt, as well as a battery replacement shortly after that, and recently I replaced the air oil separator (AOS).

    I haven't seen a compression/leak-down reports. I blindly trusted the Porsche dealership logo on the receipt, and so far so good after 6K miles.

    Hope I was able to answer at least some of your questions!

  • WRENCH.56 (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

    Nice car! It's encouraging that you have put 6K miles on the used engine, but some detailed info would be helpful.
    What do you know about the engine replacement? I read that the original engine rebuild was unsuccessful, so a used engine was installed with the new parts transplanted from the failed re-build. How many miles were on the used engine? Is it still a 2.7 or a 3.2? Did the IMS replacement go into the used engine? What other new parts were transplanted? Was a compression and leak-down test performed on the used engine after installation? Was the used engine from a 987.1 or 987.2 or something else?
    If I were able to fully ascertain this info from the rebuild invoice, I wouldn't bug you with this. Thanks in advance for whatever you can clarify.

  • ikromanov (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

    @rotarychainsaw The receipt states 'engine will not start, internal failure of engine', so it must be the IMS bearing.

  • rotarychainsaw (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

    Why did the engine blow the first time around?

  • ikromanov (seller) 3 years, 6 monthsago

    Hello everyone and welcome to the auction! Please let me know if you have any questions, and I will answer those to the best of knowledge. Thanks!
