This 2006 Porsche 987 Cayman S had been sold new in Beverly Hills and spent life in California registered to a single owner before recently being transformed into the one-off safari-style rally build we see today.  The conversion was carried out by the specialists at Vali Motorsports (VMS) at approximately 72k miles and included custom modified bodywork, Bilstein/Tarett suspension, underbody coating, and a rebuilt 3.4L engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, new clutch, Guard LSD, and Auto-Blip system.  Other features include a hydraulic handbrake, a custom roll cage, suede headliner, Carrera GT-style racing seats, and 16” Braid rally wheels with BF Goodrich tires.  Engineered to maximize off-road capabilities while maintaining comfort for regular driving, this unique and beautifully executed Cayman S rally car is now being offered for auction by its builder out of California.

This 987 has been refinished in Porsche’s standard shade of White and features a VMS modified hood with a rally light pod along with a functional roof vent and camera mount.  Custom bumpers and rocker panels have also been installed along with a front splitter, front and rear fender flares, a fiberglass ducktail rear spoiler, and a custom spare wheel mount.  Other additions include a kill switch, mud flaps, Cup Car hood pins, wheel spacers, wheel studs, and 16”x8” Braid rally wheels mounted with BF Goodrich rally gravel tires sized 215/85.  The underbody has also been completely coated in a protective bed liner material.  Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The original Stone Grey interior has been outfitted with a custom suede headliner along with Carrera GT-style racing seats, 2” Sabelt harnesses, VMS seat mounts with lowering anchors, an integrated hydraulic handbrake, and a custom 1.75” roll bar.

The 3.4L flat-six engine was rebuilt by Vali Motorsports and features an upgraded IMS bearing, deep sump oil pan, and GT3 muffler.  The 6-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels and has been paired with an Auto-Blip system, oil cooler, new clutch, pressure plate, and Guard limited-slip differential.  The suspension consists of Bilstein and Tarett components with custom springs and custom sway bar drop links.  Additional features include a lightweight battery, custom stainless steel braided brake lines, and a custom wiring system to operate the engine, lighting system, and power windows.

This sale will include a clean title.

@Cpersico27 Still interested in the car

Great looking car. I wasn’t willing to go any higher even though it’s worth more. I just want all wheel drive for Utah winters and I won’t fit in those seats.

@Atomic1 Used for autocross and spun a bearing. Rebuilt by Vision Porsche shop in Laguna CA

@Cpersico27 What was the reason for the rebuild at 70K miles?

  • Cpersico27 (seller) 1 year, 12 monthsago

@Atomic1 Yes rebuilt to stick specs with IMS bearing fix and deep sump.

  • Adrenalinsports (registered bidder) 1 year, 12 monthsago

@Cpersico27 I used the contact seller link

  • Atomic1 (registered bidder) 1 year, 12 monthsago

@Cpersico27 The description describes the engine as rebuilt. Is it rebuilt to stock specs with the deep sump and IMS upgrade?

  • Cpersico27 (seller) 1 year, 12 monthsago

@Adrenalinsports I have not received PM

  • Adrenalinsports (registered bidder) 1 year, 12 monthsago

@Cpersico27 I sent a PM. Can you call me?

  • Cpersico27 (seller) 1 year, 12 monthsago

@Adrenalinsports I'm 6ft and 200lbs and ok. I'm sure we can awap for larger seats if needed.

  • Adrenalinsports (registered bidder) 1 year, 12 monthsago

I’m 6’3 250 lbs. will I even fit in those seats?

  • Cpersico27 (seller) 1 year, 12 monthsago

@gpmotors The engine is stock with the exception of the IMS bearing fix and a deep sump oil pan.

  • gpmotors (registered bidder) 1 year, 12 monthsago

is the engine still stock? Or has it been rebuilt and upgraded?
Saw there was mention that the motor had a custom wiring harness. Is it still on stock ECU?

  • GTBman (registered bidder) 1 year, 12 monthsago

If this Porsche doesn’t meet the reserve I have a 2018 GT3 with under 5700 miles that is obviously worth a lot more than this Porsche to trade for this cayman S. Not sure this is allowed or even an option on this auction site so I apologize as I’m new here. Thanks

  • Cpersico27 (seller) 1 year, 12 monthsago

@GTBman Hi, we have and can build a variety of Porsche rally/safari vehicles. We have done g-body, 964, Cayman, Cayenne, Subaru WRX models. thanks

  • GTBman (registered bidder) 1 year, 12 monthsago

Will you be making anymore rally type Porsche’s? And if so how can we contact you besides here. Thanks

  • Adrenalinsports 1 year, 12 monthsago

Bid in the amount of $38,000

  • Cpersico27 (seller) 1 year, 12 monthsago

@BScifers hi, The roof vent is fully functional rally roof vent. The smaller vent is camera housing for bullet camera with AIM or VBOX. thanks

  • BScifers (registered bidder) 1 year, 12 monthsago

Cool build! What is the purpose of the scoops mounted to the roof? Picture 87 seems to indicate the larger one is for a vent, but what is the smaller scoop for? TIA and GLWTA!

@Giant0047 Hi, the car has Fabtech system with catalytic converters.

  • Giant0047 (registered bidder) 1 year, 12 monthsago

    @Cpersico27
the car retains the catalytic converters for emissions, correct? I see the muffler swap but no mention of the cats which I believe are on the headers for 987s.

    @Atomic1 Hi
We can do front and rear skid plate package for $2500. Thanks

  • Atomic1 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

@Cpersico27 Thanks for the info. Can you give a rough idea of what a skid plate package might cost should the winning bidder want to add that option?
    Thanks

  • Cpersico27 (seller) 2 yearsago

@Atomic1 Hi, there is a 4 inch raise and soft long springs which offer a comfortable ride on mild off road section. Thanks

  • Atomic1 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Approximately how much suspension lift was added? Does the Bilstein/Tarett suspension provide for a slightly softer offroad ride?

  • Cpersico27 (seller) 2 yearsago

@Version2.0Car Hi, on this build we have not put on front and rear skid plates. So mild off road use. We could make skid plates if desired. Thanks

  • Version2.0Car 2 yearsago

Has anything been done to protect the radiators? Looks like a fun car for forest service roads.

  • Cpersico27 (seller) 2 yearsago

@Manpot Hi, no noise(s) what so ever. Very solid and firm on/off road.

  • Manpot 2 yearsago

Does the spare mounted like that create turbulance..much wind noise?

  • Cpersico27 (seller) 2 yearsago

@scuderia Medium size European brand no name on it regarding the seats.

Love to see an off-road inspired build with LSD. Shocked when I see them without. Hopefully the new owner will actually use it as intended (I will if it's me!). The front splitter looks cool but the car seems better suited for skid plates. @Cpersico27 would you please provide more info about the suspension setup? What's a ballpark budget if one were to have a Cayman built to replicate this?

  • scuderia (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Nice build. What size and brand/model seats are those? thank you

  • Uiraca0 2 yearsago

What an awesome car. As an owner of a Cayman, this would make the perfect balance for winter and summer driving.

  • Cpersico27 (seller) 2 yearsago

hi, we have built several rally safari cars. It is suitable for light off road duty. No skid plates on this build, so don't recommend aggressive off-roading. If needed we can add skid plates. Regards

  • Jamesboyd58 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Uhh. I mean, “huh?” and “wow” at the same time. A Cayman safari! Intriguing for sure. Has it seen unpaved roads?
