The pinnacle of the 987.2 generation, the Porsche Cayman R features a 330-horsepower 3.4-liter flat-six engine, a lowered sport-tuned suspension, a limited-slip differential, 19” forged lightweight wheels, an exterior Aerokit, and a lightweight interior with painted body-color trim. This 2012 example is finished in Black over matching leather upholstery and comes equipped with optional bi-xenon cornering headlights, auto-dimming mirrors, automatic climate control, BOSE Surround Sound System, manual Sport Seats, and a 6-speed manual transmission. Purchased by the seller, its third owner, in 2022 with less than 10k miles driven since, this rare 987.2 Cayman R is now being offered for auction out of Texas with approximately 59k miles on the odometer.

The Cayman R is distinguished from other 987.2 Cayman models by its Aerokit front and rear spoilers, contrasting mirror caps and side air intakes, Porsche script side stripes, black-framed headlights, and gloss black rear model designation. It shares its aluminum door panels with the contemporary GT3 and features 19” lightweight forged wheels from the Boxter Spyder. This example is finished in Black with silver contrasts and is equipped with optional bi-xenon cornering headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and auto-dimming mirrors. Other equipment includes LED daytime running lights, headlamp washers, fog lights, LED taillights, dual center-mounted exhaust tips, red brake calipers, and black-painted wheels. New tires were mounted in 2024. The seller indicates the car struck a deer in early 2024 and the exterior was completely refinished apart from the trunk lid, spoiler, and mirrors. Some minor rock chips are noted on the front end. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, the Cayman R features a special lightweight interior with painted body-colored trim pieces, red seatbelts, cloth door pull loops, a hoodless instrument cluster, and contrasting model designations on the door sills. This example is equipped with black leather manually adjustable Sport Seats, a black leather three-spoke steering wheel, optional automatic climate control, cruise control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, the BOSE Surround Sound System, a PCM head unit, and a Bluetooth audio module. Aftermarket Rennline pedal covers have been installed along with a Mr12Volt stereo upgrade which adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionalities to the head unit. The original CDR-30 stereo is included in the sale.

Rated at 330 HP, the Cayman R’s 3.4-liter flat-six engine boasts an increase of 10 HP over a contemporary Cayman S. This example is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential sending power to the rear wheels. The Cayman R comes standard with a lowered sport suspension including stiffer springs and anti-roll bars. The exhaust was modified with a secondary catalytic converter delete by the previous owner. The seller notes the radiator and A/C compressor were replaced following the accident in 2024. The car is said to have undergone routine maintenance every 6 months including a steering column service within the last year and fresh fluids in December 2024.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare trunk headliner, the original CDR-30 stereo, and a clean title (lien).

The seller would like you to know: “The Cayman R is a true driver's car. Perfect balance, handling, and performance for the last tribute to the 987.2 platform. This car is super special, rare, and has been a joy to own and drive. A great enthusiast vehicle that is meant to be driven and sounds amazing from start to finish. You'll always have a smile on your face.”

I sure like mine, and feel OK about paying a price comparable to this asking price.

  • SND9872911 (seller) 1 week, 5 daysago

@DonnieG and @CarDragon, thank you both. If you look at the PPI I had done in 2022, I was concerned about the track time but the DME back then shows that it likely wasn't at all, or maybe rarely. Hope that helps alleviate some of that concern. I can confirm that I have not tracked it at all. Just spirited drives through Texas Hill Country.

While the Bids aren't representative of what I feel the car is worth, I put it in DealTank to hopefully come to a happy medium with someone! Appreciate your comments and efforts!

  • DonnieG (registered bidder) 1 week, 5 daysago

@CarDragon I feel the same way.
Previous owner was a Porsche driving instructor, probably seen some track time.
Either way nice car for the right price.

  • CarDragon 1 week, 5 daysago

Time has spoken. Good luck in the DT as this will be a great driver, for the right price.

As a clarification that came up about the title. I do have a lien on the car that will need to be satisfied upon sale. It is with RBFCU here in Austin, TX. I've already contacted them and it will be good to have a third party handle the paperwork and transfer to the new owner. This shouldn't be an issue but I wanted to mention it here since it wasn't originally in the listing as I recently saw on some other PCAR Market listings.

@CarDragon - Thank you!! Totally understand and truly appreciate your insights. It's a hell of a car and I've enjoyed it thoroughly and hoping the next owner does too. Looking forward to fulfilling my long-term goal of getting into an air-cooled eventually!

@SND9872911 Thank you for the thorough explanation and I hope that helps the bidding community and all of your efforts for a successful auction. I am not criticizing the car, but rather the advice you were given. As a reserve auction we will see just how much the damage and cost of repairs hurt (if at all) the value of this R. Best of luck to you and all bidders.

  • SND9872911 (seller) 1 week, 5 daysago

@CarDragon - thank you for your insight. I just want to be transparent that it wasn't necessarily $50,000 in repairs, it was taking care of the front end damage and then restoring the overall car's exterior and mechanics to pristine or as much as like-new as possible. For example, they would've only painted portions of the car but they went above and beyond to remove any door dings, pitting, rock chips and ensure the paint blends properly so they resprayed almost all of the car and then notified me and took care of any other items by having Porsche of Austin look at it and do a final check for any mechanical maintenance items. Hagerty and the Body shop worked closely to restore the car given it's rarity and agreed upon valuation.

If you have more questions, I'm more than happy to help answer!

  • DonnieG 1 week, 5 daysago

Bid in the amount of $27,000

  • CarDragon 1 week, 5 daysago

Time will tell, but I don't feel as though you got good advice as stated below: "The Cayman R was a limited run production (I believe only 1,600ish made globally) so Hagerty and Porsche of Austin assured me that given the high quality restoration, that value shouldn't be impacted significantly."
I think any car that has had more than $50,000 in repairs suffers a negative impact on value. GLWA.

Beautiful in real life. Shines better than new.

@Banshee_001 I was unfortunately not able to get some good undercarriage shots. I'm currently traveling for personal reasons so I may not be able to get them before the auction closes. The startup video from the exhaust view is probably the closest. Most of it is plastic protection.

  • Banshee_001 (registered bidder) 1 week, 6 daysago

    Any pictures of the undercarriage?

  • SND9872911 (seller) 2 weeks, 2 daysago

@solidovale of course! Thank you! It's been wonderful to own but excited for a path to an air cooled 911.

I never tracked the car during my ownership. Just spirited drives through Texas Hill country. Always garaged.

I bought the car when it was on consignment at RAC. What they told me was the previous owner was a Porsche experience driving instructor and this was her personal weekend car. I tried to find the DME report which I think should be mentioned in the inspection report when I bought it in 2022. I tried to get a new DME report but was tough to find someone this weekend. I can provide it to whoever wins the auction assuming there's a winner!

  • solidovale (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 2 daysago

Thanks for your quick responses. You have a gorgeous car. Was the car ever tracked during your and/or previous ownerships? Any info about previous service records ?

  • SND9872911 (seller) 2 weeks, 2 daysago

@solidovale unfortunately I do not. I bought the car this way from the previous owner and my understanding was they sent their exhaust and received the modified one to install.

It currently passes emissions in Texas and does not throw any codes or lights but I'm unsure of other states.

  • solidovale (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 2 daysago

Do you have the secondary catalytic converter that it can be welded back in to make it legal?

  • SND9872911 (seller) 2 weeks, 3 daysago

@sshjd - From my understanding, it's all dependent on the insurance company, body shop, and Carfax's determination of what and how they report it. My guess (so don't take my word) is that because most of it was aesthetic it slipped under the radar. The bill was high due to my choosing to respray most of the car, take care of maintenance items at the same time, and the fact that the Cayman R parts come at premium (the side decals were $1,500 alone!). I did want to be honest so that's why I'm providing the claim information and pictures so folks know.

The Cayman R was a limited run production (I believe only 1,600ish made globally) so Hagerty and Porsche of Austin assured me that given the high quality restoration, that value shouldn't be impacted significantly.

  • sshjd (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 3 daysago

Astonishing that a $50,000 damage claim doesn’t show up on Carfax. How’s that happen?

  • daniel.kinsella 2 weeks, 3 daysago

Bid in the amount of $20,250

  • SND9872911 (seller) 2 weeks, 3 daysago

@spring2010 - thank you for your comments!

Only the passenger side headlight was replaced, driver's side was polished. I believe the only maintenance they suggested was the control arm be replaced on the passenger side front, other than that suspension wasn't affected and it's still in good condition.

  • spring2010 (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 3 daysago

Beautiful R. Were both headlights replaced during the repair, or just right side? Also were any repairs or adjustments required to the right front strut or other suspension components? Thank you

@daniel.kinsella - additionally, the work was done at Berli's Body and Fine Auto Finishes (https://berlisbody.com/) they are Porsche approved/certified and one of the best places in Austin, TX.

@SND9872911 And new tires as well!

  • SND9872911 (seller) 2 weeks, 4 daysago

@daniel.kinsella - thank you for looking! I love this car. It's a blast and drives amazing. Just looking to get into an air-cooled which has been my ultimate goal, and this was a nice distraction for a few years.

I believe I have a picture from the accident and the work. I'll try to get that posted as soon as possible. Were you able to review the Included insurance claim documentation? That showed all of the aesthetic and maintenance items done to the car while they had it. The passenger fender, headlight and front bumper were replaced and painted. The entire car except for the rear decklid, spoiler, and mirrors were resprayed to have a cohesive blended look and to take care of previous rock chips and pitting. At the same time, I had the radiators, and A/C Compressor replaced, and had the steering column serviced, along with an oil change. Wheels were re-finished as well to make the exterior as close to perfect as possible (some regular driving post incurred a few other rock chips, but nothing major). Windshield was also replaced, and they put new official Cayman R badging on the sides and front bumper. New Battery as well.

I'm in the process of trying to get a DME run before the auction ends but if not, I can definitely include that post sale.

  • daniel.kinsella (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 4 daysago

Gorgeous car. Is it possible to get photos of the car right after the accident? I see it has had a significant amount of work done and am interested in the car and would like to know the extent of damage prior to being fixed. Additionally, can a DME be run on the car? Thanks, again beautiful car. The R is a terrific machine.

  • nameisbauer 2 weeks, 4 daysago

Nice. Shiny Black R, doesnt get much better. Everything you need, nothing you dont.
