Now available for auction is this 2001 BMW E36/8 Z3 M Coupe.  Reported to be 1 of only 74 examples finished in the combination of Black Sapphire Metallic over a Black Nappa leather interior, this first-generation M Coupe is also equipped with the desirable S54 inline 6-cylinder engine which was derived from the E46 M3.  Having undergone some significant refurbishments over the past 2 years to bring the car up to excellent driver-grade standards, this M Coupe is now being offered by its seller in New York with approximately 79k miles showing on the odometer.

The rare Black Sapphire Metallic paint is said to be in fair overall condition with a recent paint correction carried out to ensure the best possible appearance.  The front and rear bumpers exhibit wear, some dings are noted throughout the exterior and there is also some clear coat separation on the roof (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  This M Coupe can be distinguished from its standard Z3 counterpart by its revised front fascia, widened rear fenders, and side air vents.  Aftermarket Magnalfow exhaust tips can be seen in the rear and this Coupe rides on newly refinished 17” BMW 5-spoke wheels which were dressed in new tires within the last 4k miles.

Inside, this BMW features a Black Nappa leather interior with custom Alcantara upholstery.  Some noteworthy refurbishments have been done throughout the cabin including a Neverdone glovebox sag kit, a leather Z V2 cupholder with armrest, and a new ZHP shift knob in Alcantara.  Factory optioned equipment includes an in-dash CD43 Business Class CD player, Harmon Kardon Audio, heated seats, a power flip-up moonroof, and power seats as well as power windows and door locks. The original radio has been retained, the driver’s window regulator has been replaced, and the seller indicates all gauges and accessories to be fully functional.

For the final evolution of the Z3 M, a total of 678 coupe versions were built with the updated S54 engine sourced from BMW’s M3.  This 3.2L inline 6-cylinder engine sends 315 HP to the rear wheels through a ZF 5-speed manual transaxle with factory equipped limited-slip differential (3.15) allowing for a 0-60 time of approximately 5 seconds.  Compared to the standard Z3, the M Coupe is equipped with a firmer suspension, thicker anti-roll bars, more robust semi-trailing arms, and a strengthened subframe.  The original rod bearings and VANOS unit are in place and the following service items were addressed in the last 2 years to bring the car up to excellent running order:

  • Coil Packs
  • Brake Pads and Rotors
  • Brake Lines
  • Rear End Links
  • Front Control Arms
  • ABS sensor
  • Valve Adjustment (last 10k miles)
  • New Magnaflow 14815 Mufflers

This sale will be accompanied by 1 master key, an owner’s book, and a clean title.  Do not miss out on your chance to own this rare BMW E36/8 M Coupe.

Careful on title jumping. That's a felony in all 50 states unless there are extenuating circumstances, i.e. a death of the owner and family or next of kin wants to sell the car. If the car is ever searched, there's a record of the crime right here in the comments. I'm all for a clean transaction, but that's a huge red flag.

That would be too good of a deal for $27K

@993David I never registered the car, and never signed my end of the title so I can give you it the way I have it. If you’re not comfortable with that, I have a dealer that can process the paperwork

@seller if the car is not in your name are you selling it for the owner or are you skipping an open title from earlier this year?

  • NickMDominguez (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@Tomfitz73 Unfortunately I do not. The car starts right up and drives as it should. If there were more time in the auction I would happily add a video. my apologies

Are there any videos of the car running and driving?

@s8ilver Detailed photos of the common failure points of the Subframe will be uploaded today. Like stated previously, there are absolutely no signs of any failure anywhere on the car. The photos shown are the top right corner of the floor, both sides of the diff mount and the bracket on the top of the floor for the trim pieces. All have the spot weld Intact.

In the description you say that the vanos is "in place" what do you mean by that; has it been refurbished? Detailed subframe pics are a must to determine this shoes value. Any more info in this car being raced?

Photographs of the trunk floor on a Coupe are worthless, unless the insulations has been scraped away (I wouldn't destroy for photos). Best bet is to get under the car and photograph the diff ear and its mounting to the trunk floor. Check out some previous BAT Coupe auctions for the areas in question.

Thanks for everyone's interest and questions. First, the elephant in the room: The Subframe. There seems to be absolutely no signs of failure, separation of any spot welds, or and floor separation. I will provide a photo of the trunk floor in tomorrow, but you will not really be able to see much unless I take photos of every spot weld. I assure buyers, the car is fine. Cars that see extended track use (typically early cars) due to the lateral movement and aggressive driving will have subframe issues. While this car has been used on track before, it was never a dedicated track car in turn seeing lots of abuse. The subframe is a real problem on Z3's, it isn't as bad as most say it is, scaring buyers of any Z3 away. I daily drive my personal S54 coupe in New York with stiff suspension for years now and my floor is perfect. As far as the bearings, I did not have the oil analysis done on this car. The majority of the work I have done to this coupe just consist of repairs to the interior, cleaning up of the paint and turning the car back to a more stock form. I will contact the previous owner about the health of the bearings since we are friends (how I acquired this car) and will report back asap. The Carfax is not out of date. The car was never registered under my name due to it being clear I just wanted to put a little work into a coupe In need and pass it on for the next person to enjoy. Technically I would count as the 4th owner but I never used the car, I just put some money and time into it. Hope this answers any questions! thanks

Hi @seller. Can you please provide info regarding the subframe reinforcements, please? (pictures of this would be key for the auction)
I´ve read in the comments that you picked the car a year ago but Carfax shows the last and 3rd owner in 2017. This means that the Carfax is outdated?
    Thanks for your time.

Nice car! I don't know why so many insist that the M Coupe has "widened rear fenders." They're just as wide as any other 6 cylinder Z3 and identical bodywork to a Z3 Coupe minus the mirrors, fender grills, and bumper covers. The deeper dish ET8 17x9" rear wheels do give the impression of a wider body though. Any specifics on sub frame condition as mentioned? With original rod bearings, have you had an oil analysis done?

  • Tomfitz73 (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Great looking M Shoe, I have always wanted to own one! Do you know if the car has ever had the rear subframe reinforcements added?

  • NickMDominguez (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Hey everyone, bidders, watchers etc, Here on auction is me and my father’s m coupe we picked up only a year ago. As an enthusiast myself, I saw this car needing a bit of attention and decided to pick it up, hoping to help it out for the next owner. First things first, this car is a driver. The drivetrain is solid and it doesnt have any issues, but the paint is not perfect. I recently did a paint correction on the car, bringing back a lot of depth, but the front/rearbumper, and the roof could use a respray. There are a few tiny dings aswell which would be good PDR canidates. If someone is looking for a rare, fun, and unique car they can actually drive, this is the one for you. The milage sits at a comfortable 79,000 meaning the car has been just broken in, but not neglected or beated up. Ill be watching consistently to answer any questions anyone might have, I will be here to answer. Good luck, and thanks for Bidding!
