Produced by International Harvester in Fort Wayne, Indiana, from 1960 until 1980, the Scout is a utilitarian off-road vehicle designed as a competitor to the Jeep CJ. This 1964 International Harvester Scout 80 4x4 represents the original Scout model, featuring a 152ci inline-four engine paired with a 3-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case. It was purchased by the seller from the original owner’s family in Montana in 2012 and has since been completely stripped, refinished, and refurbished with new upholstery. Diligently maintained by its caretaker for the past 13 years, this International Scout is now being offered for auction out of Mississippi.

The exterior was completely stripped and refinished in two-stage tan paint with a contrasting white Travel Top under current ownership. The seller states the body was found to be in excellent condition with mostly original paint upon their purchase, was nearly free of rust, and showed no signs of accidents. Some metal repair work was used to address a minor dent on the passenger door during the restoration, along with replacements of the rubber seals and weatherstripping. The original bumpers, front grille, lights, and trim pieces were also refurbished and reinstalled. The truck rides on polished aluminum 15" Ford Bronco wheels with new Goodyear Wrangler Trail Runner A/T tires mounted in 2024. A matching full-size spare wheel and tire are mounted on the split-folding tailgate. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The body-colored interior features reupholstered grey vinyl front bucket seats and a rear bench seat. Accessories include a fold-down windshield, removable doors, a four-spoke steering wheel, a floor-mounted shifter and transfer case lever, black rubber floor liners, chrome door handles and window cranks, front vent windows, sliding rear side windows, sun visors, a heater, and an AM/FM/cassette stereo.

The 152ci inline-four engine was factory-rated at 93 HP and 143 lb-ft of torque. A 3-speed manual transmission distributes power to the rear or all four wheels through a dual-range transfer case. The truck is equipped with manually locking front hubs and four-wheel drum brakes.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a spare tire, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “At the time I purchased this Scout in 2012, I already had two other Scout projects and had learned enough to know that the best Scout to buy for restoration is the best one you can find. This Scout had been owned by one family in Montana since new, always garaged, and periodically maintained.  It was being sold by the daughter who had used the Scout to commute to high school, after which it spent some number of years stored away in the family garage.  The dry Montana climate allowed this Scout to be very close to rust-free, which can only be said about a very few Scouts in dry climates and garaged with low mileage.  There were only a few pinholes in the rocker panels near the fuel tanks, which are partially enclosed and tend to hold dirt and debris out of sight from routine washing. Virtually all original Scouts have some degree of rust in this area.  And this Scout was also accident-free, so there was no prior accident damage still needing to be dealt with.  I have driven the Scout very little, but stored it inside.  Now approaching 80 years of age, I wanted to finish the project and undertook an extensive, high-quality renovation over the last several years.  Overall, a far above average project from the start, which will give future owners much pleasure.”

This Scout is not a project. I has been carefully refinished and refurbished as photos indicate and current pricing is below my original reserve, which I thought was low for a Scout in this condition. It is ready for a new owner to enjoy. Similar Scouts have sold recently for over $50,000.

Thanks for bring the Scout to Pcar. Can you clarify what is left to complete the "project"? Does it run and drive reliably or need mechanical work?

Photos of undercarriage start around the 100th photo and follow with quite a few more.

The top is removable, and the windshield folds down. There are photos of the undercarriage in the gallery of photos, abut half to 2/3 down.
