Up for auction is this 1978 Porsche 911SC Targa finished in Silver Metallic over a black interior.  This first-year 911SC was purchased new by the seller’s family from Schneider Nelson Porsche/Audi of Oakhurst, N.J. and was eventually passed on to him in 2004 at approximately 93k miles.  The car features an early Turbo Carrera rear spoiler, classic Fuchs wheels, and a 5-speed manual transmission.  Having recently undergone nearly $2k worth of service in preparation for sale, this Targa is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner in Virginia while showing just over 100k miles on the odometer.

This Targa is finsihed in Silver Metallic and the seller reports the hood and driver’s side front fender to have been refinished during the 1980s and have since begun to fade, additional images are provided in the photo gallery.  The Targa top is described to be in fair condition, although the seals are in need of replacement.   This 911SC features yellow-tinted front fog lights, a lower front air dam, a 930 Turbo Carrera rear spoiler, and factory 15” Fuchs wheels dressed in older Kumho Ecsta tires. The original decklid is also included in the sale.

The black interior presents as highly original with a factory Blaupunkt radio remaining in place.  A protective cover has been placed over the steering wheel and the front seat upholstery has begun to separate.  A small crack can also be seen on the upper portion of the dashboard toward the defroster vent.  The rearview mirror has become detached and the driver’s inner door handle is broken, although a new inner door handle is said to accompany the sale.  The air conditioning does not blow cold at this time.

This SC is equipped with an air-cooled 3.0L flat-six engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission that sends up to 180 HP to the rear wheels.  Routine fluid and filter changes are reported to have been kept up to date throughout the lifetime of the car, and the front steering linkages and ball joints are said to have been upgraded in 2004.  Nearly $2k worth of service has been recently carried in preparation for sale including new spark plugs, replacement of an oil hose, and an oil and filter change.  The front and rear decklid struts are in need of replacement and the seller reports occasional hesitation on startup.

This sale will include the original decklid, a toolkit, the original sales envelope, and a clean title.  Do not miss your chance to own this first-year 911SC Targa.

@LongwoodCharger So it must be working intermittently. If you look at bad bad drivers post from earlier today. He mentioned the condition of the tires. Those tires have been on the car for well over 10 years. There's been very little miles put on the car over that period of time.

  • LongwoodCharger (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Pleskonk5155 I noticed the trip/odometer not moving during the closeup driving video. Over the course of 25-30 sec, it should’ve registered 0.2-0.3 miles, but it didn’t move.

Gears are often broken. I own 928, ask me how I know.

  • Pleskonk5155 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@LongwoodCharger Is this a thing with Porsches? I've not driven it much but it was recording miles on the test drive last evening.

Bid in the amount of $14,250

  • LongwoodCharger (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

    @#Pleskonk5155
Can you verify that the odometer/trip are not working?
Great car. Perfect example of what the "online car auctions" used to be and not every car is perfect. Just an honest representation of an used car without being on Craigslist/FB or trying to be perfect and be picked to the bone by us!
Currently working on my '78 928's CIS system, and this car's just needs to be driven to workout the old varnish in it.

  • BadBadDriver (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Full disclosure: I live near this car and got to check it out. I have not nor will I receive any compensation from this post. I am not a Porsche mechanic, just an enthusiast..
Cosmetically, yes, the car looks like it will need a paint job. The bent metal behind the front tires seemed to me like a curb hop impact. I have an 06 vehicle from Maryland as well as an avalanche that was driven here for only 6 years. I can tell you, compared with those vehicles, that this car appears to not have been driven during the winter in the mid Atlantic area. Pcar may have pics as I sent them to the owner of inside the front wheels and plenty of other under carriage shots.. Car seemed pretty solid, especially being this old, seemingly on original suspension. Tracked straight, took a picture of the Ecsta still stamped on the tire tread. (Not driven much since new tires) car is beyond my price now, which is why I am sharing. No smoke noticed on start up. Did see the slight difficulty on start up, but ran well after that. Owner seems to be representing this car accurately. I personally would drive this car immediately, without reservation.

@automotiveartist No, it was purchased new from a dealership in N.J.

  • Pleskonk5155 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@automotiveartist As far as what needs to be done on the car, that is pretty subjective. It runs very well now. Obviously, there are issues with the paint. Also the front leather seats show a lot of wear. Lastly, if you would review this thread fully, you will find where I discussed other issues with the car in answering questions.

  • Pleskonk5155 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@automotiveartist The car was purchased by my father brand new. They gifted it to me in 2004. So there have been only two owners. My father lived in Central Pennsylvania.

  • automotiveartist (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

I see you are the original owners… Doss Jerry Brown sell you the car? He used to own a Mocha Brown SC

  • automotiveartist (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

    Hello,
I grew up in Oakhurst in. Do you know who the original owner was? Probably knew them. What is need on the car of I were to purchase? Looking forward to speaking further,

    @castorhama
The driver's side and passenger side have been jacked up wrong bending the sill or lower part of the rocker panel if you will. That's a shame! How to repair and bend it back = $$$, or just enjoy driving the car as is. This is a barn find that I am still intrigued by. Porsche Passion is what I have, and this is my type of project car. Been there done that and it is satisfying to bring a car back to it's proper mechanical and cosmetic condition. This one, mechanically and safety would be my 1st priority, and possibly leave it as is with it's patina and history of car enjoyed by it's owners and kept as is as a time capsule. Restore it to much and it loses the history of the car. It's only an original Porsche once and continuing the history behind the barn find on this car would be the best!

@tampagarage Sorry, it was some over $1200. Dealt with fuel system mostly. See a previous post of mine

  • tampagarage (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Hi Seller- I would be interested in knowing, specifically, what was done during the recent service for $2k? Can you post the receipt? If not, can you simply specify each item and the cost?

  • Pleskonk5155 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

I sent a PDF of the bill from the mechanic to PCar. Hopefully they will post it tomorrow. He didn't clean the engine. Mostly dealt with the fuel system and changed the oil and filter.

  • Pleskonk5155 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@CastorHama I may have bent them slightly. Used to keep it in another garage on blocks. I'll try to take photos tomorrow. I don't believe there is any significant rust anywhere.
It wasn't tuned by the mechanic but it's not missing a cylinder when driving it.

  • CastorHama (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Hi, must say this car is in a lovely used condition :)
I see that the sills are bent on both sides. Has someone jacked the car on the sills by mistake or has it fallen of the jack stands some time? Is there rust in that area now? Do you have, or could you take any close up pictures of that area?
I see there's a some oil there in the latest pictures you posted. Didn't the mechanic clean up the engine after fixing the leak or does the pictures imply there is still a leak somewhere to be taken care of?
Oh, and last question, from the video it sounds like its idling a bit rough and might not really be firing on all cylinders. Have any part of the ignition system been serviced lately?

  • Pleskonk5155 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Pleskonk5155 My mistake, they are up at the end of the photo reel

@AlexM Sorry, just saw your post. The repair is a complicated story. My father as a dentist in a very rural part of Pennsylvania, had a patient who had a body shop that specialized in foreign cars. This person convinces my dad that he was the best person to repair the Porsche from the deer strike. The paint and repair did well for a couple of decades to be fair. Also to be clear, I can't see any problem with the body work if there is any at all, only the paint. Also I think I figured out how to post videos and more pictures on this forum. I'm going to work on that Tuesday.

@Pleskonk5155 Terry, thanks for reply. If it was serviced at a dealership and your folks carried car as a baby, then car accident happened in 80s, why the car was repaired so poorly? A
Did you spray Fuchs (pic 73) or you got it like this?
As everyone here waiting for a cold start and driving videos, underbody pictures.
    Thank you

  • JBoxerGT2 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Pleskonk5155 My SC was stored in a barn on jack stands. Little did the owner know, mice can climb. I bought the car, pulled the engine out, replaced seals, oil leaks, etc etc pulled the carpets out, vacuuming mice poop, heck even blowing out of ac vents. Pulled three dead mice out of the car, one in the smugglers box. I laugh about it and had fun restoring the car. Today looks amazing n drives phenomenal

  • Pleskonk5155 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@JBoxerGT2 I mostly agree with you. I've learned that 'Porsche People' are different about their ride. I sadly aren't one. I really like the car. It is a really a joy to drive but I recognize it is at a time in it's life where it needs someone with that Porsche passion.

  • Pleskonk5155 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@normanbettle My folks didn't keep their receipts but took it to a dealership in State College, Pa. I know it was very well maintained, it was their baby. I did very little with it since I've had it as we didn't drive it much.

  • Pleskonk5155 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@AlexM The only time their was any collision was sometime in the early 80's to the drivers fender and hood by a deer. As I look at the car now the original paint on the rest of the car looks good. I looked closely at the passenger hoodlight ring. I think it was repainted too. I will post the latest repairs from the mechanic. Not sure about start up. I'm pretty sure the fuel filter was replaced. You do have to crank it some when cold. Once warmed up even a little it starts at once.

  • JBoxerGT2 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

This one has all the looks of a barn find. It's going to take some TLC to get this one up to par. I like it! Trouble on start up more than likely needs a new fuel accumulator, or fuel filter. Set aside at least $10k to bring this car up to date. Love affair and sentimental value on this one, but clearly not kept up as it required. I am sure the owner is sad to see it go, but understands it should go to a new owner and let this car live on and create new memories with its new owner.

  • normanbettle (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Do you have service receipts you can post? Can you take pics of the underbody. Thanks

  • AlexM (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Dear Terry, thank you for such detailed pictures,

    few questions:
    1. what was the reason for the hood and driver’s side front fender refinishing?
    2. any accidents?
    2. why the passenger`s side headlight scoop`s color isn`t match?
    3. what is your Porsche mechanic said about occasional hesitation on startup?

tbh I`ve never seen one family car in such condition.

  • Pleskonk5155 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Jb423 So sorry, we didn't even know that those were typical problem areas and so have not had any of that addressed. It has been running well and we are hopeful that these issues are not a problem.

  • Pleskonk5155 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@normanbettle Sorry, VIN number not phone number.

  • Pleskonk5155 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@normanbettle The VIN number on the photo from the door jamb is the only phone number that we have. It is the number that is listed on our title from the Commonwealth of Virginia. I do have a plastic card that came from the dealership that puts an s in front of the VIN on the photo. If this doesn't help let me know.

  • Pleskonk5155 (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

    Koolbilly,
I had an oil leak from the hose running up to the oil pressure sensor. This was repaired by our Porsche mechanic recently. I don't think that there's any fresh oil on the garage floor where I park the car since. We've had no smoke while the car is running.

    Hello All,
My name is Terry. My folks bought the car in '78. They were big into Amway at the time. Most of the miles they put on it was on I-80 in Pa to Jersey and back. I've had it since 2004, garage kept and put about 7000 miles on it. Great car but busy life, 4 kids, etc. It deserves someone to give it more attention. I'll answer any reasonable questions. Someone is going to get, as I said before, a great car.
