  • Location: Huntington, NY 11743
  • Lot #: V-0017795

Originally designated as the replacement for the iconic 911, the 928 was designed by Porsche to incorporate the power and handling of a sports car combined with the comfort and refinement of a luxury sedan to compete with models from Audi and Mercedes. The first V8-powered Porsche ever produced, the 928 was equipped with a 16-valve 4.5L V8 generating 219 HP. This 1978 example was optioned with a rare 5-speed manual transmission, as almost 80% of 928s were ordered with automatic transmissions. This Oak Green Metallic 928 was said to have sat for the better part of 30 years and was purchased from the original owner in California with approximately 33k miles. Work under current ownership included a new radiator, custom fuel lines, a replacement fuel tank, a timing belt and water pump service, power steering hoses, and new brake rotors and pads.Currently showing around 42,750 miles on the odometer, this 928 is now being offered at auction by the seller based out of New York.

This 928 was originally finished in Oak Green Metallic (22L) and features pop-up headlights with washers, integrated fog lights, body-color mirror caps, a rear window wiper, and a single exhaust outlet. The exterior shows missing paint on the hatch, roof, hood, as well as other chips and scratches on various panels; the seller reports the front bumper has been repainted and the chassis is free of rust. The 16” phone dial wheels wear Porsche center caps and show some signs of wear, and are mounted with Continental ExtremeContact tires.

The interior features front sport seats and rear buckets upholstered in black leather. The seller describes the interior to be original, noting a rip in the headliner, tears in the front seat cushions, and minor cracking in the dashboard. The air conditioning is said to be inoperable, as well as the cruise control, the passenger side door lock, and the passenger side window regulator makes noise when dropping the window.

The 4.5L front-mounted V8 features Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection and was factory rated at 219 HP and 245 lb.-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a rear-mounted 5-speed dogleg manual transmission. The seller reports a replacement engine sourced from 928 International was installed during their ownership, as well as a new radiator, custom fuel lines, a replacement fuel tank, a timing belt and water pump service, new clutch, power steering hoses, and new brake rotors and pads. Regular oil changes have been completed in the last 10k miles.  Although the clutch has been recently replaced, the seller notes that it is not working properly at this moment.

This sale will include 3 sets of keys, owner’s manuals, some maintenance documentation,  a factory toolkit, a car cover, an original cargo cover, and a replacement headliner.

The car still has the original sticker inside the door jam that is labeled Oak Grun.

  • Billd (seller) 2 yearsago

    @Ammo yes

  • Billd (seller) 2 yearsago

@Ammo The new clutch is not working properly. It was slipping in third gear when I drove it home after the photo shoot with Pcar .The car is very dry. It came from Sacramento California. No mold or smell at all and I have never cleaned the interior with anything. It has a 1978 replacement motor from 928 International that performs identical to the original.

  • Ammo (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

@Billd all metal has original paint including the doors?

  • Billd (seller) 2 yearsago

@erapp57 Original color and original paint except for the front bumper.

  • Ammo (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Can you confirm the new clutch does NOT work and is smoked when going into gear? This is a repaint ? The original engine is NOT with the car? Is there any mold or smell on the interior from water getting in?

  • erapp57 2 yearsago

Is the paint the original color? Is it the original paint?

@co. I just sent over images of that work to Pcar Market. Thanks for your interest. I’m sure they will add them to the listing soon.

  • co. (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

@seller could you provide some recent receipts, specifically receipts showing when the timing belt was last done and the clutch work ?

  • Billd (seller) 2 yearsago

Winner of the auction gets a cool vintage bra that the original owner bought early in his possession.

@Slowrhode The original engine is gone. It had been revived, at considerable cost, and failed 5k miles later. This engine is from 928 international who told me the donor car had driven into his lot. It is a 1978 engine. Honestly, this engine performs identically to the original. And it is completely dry and it doesn’t smoke. The timing belt and water pump were swapped over from the original engine, as was the fuel injection too.

  • Slowrhode (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    Hi Bill-
Can you give any information about the replacement engine? Do you know the mileage/year/spec of the car it came out of? I assume it wasn’t rebuilt? Was engine failure the reason for the car sitting prior to your ownership? Is the original engine gone?

  • Billd (seller) 2 yearsago

I just remembered that the car had a wheel alignment when the new tires were put on. And four new axle boots we’re also done. New shifter coupler also. I have paperwork for all of that.

  • ojdickinson (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

According to others: Option Code Numbers can be found on the build label under the rear cargo carpet/foam, or in your "Warranty and Maintenance Booklet" (if dealer applied it there).

Regarding the wheels, I was inquiring about the width (7, 8, 9 inch), not the diameter (16").

  • Billd (seller) 2 yearsago

@ojdickinson Thanks for sending that. I will see if I can find anything on the car tomorrow.

  • ojdickinson (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Not sure if this is authoritative:

  • Billd (seller) 2 yearsago

@Jdinark thanks. I love this car too. The clutch was slipping a little in third gear when I drove it home from the photo shoot the other day. And I smelled clutch. The odometer has always worked since the day this car was revived. And I have never worked on it. For me the mileage is accurate.

  • Billd (seller) 2 yearsago

Oj the tire code is vyoh wc5j 2018. 16” phone dials.
I knew how to find the option codes sticker on a Porsche 911 but not this car. Maybe someone can tell me how? I never had the AC diagnosed and I would say no on the clutch being warrentied.
I just backed the car up out of the garage to get some daylight on the tires, so I could read the code, and the clutch was working perfectly in reverse and in first to put it back inside.

  • Jdinark (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Hi there - fantastic car. Is the gearbox slipping between 2nd and 3rd ?

Also is the odometer functioning ?

  • ojdickinson (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Does your documentation include the original option codes, either on the chassis sticker, window sticker, or Porsche COA? What width are the phone dials? Date code on the Contis? Do you know if the inoperable a/c is due to refrigerant or other (mechanical) issue(s)? Is the "recently replaced" clutch work under warranty?

  • Billd (seller) 2 yearsago

I think that’s good advice. I wish I could do it. But it’s not going to happen this week. I am around all week and willing to show the car to anyone. Don’t forget it’s a no reserve auction. Highest bidder gets the car.

  • tomneedles (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    I like these early 928.

Advice to Seller -- at the very least, get the clutch looked at, if not fixed entirely.

@co. Great. Then this is a good car for you. I would say around 5K miles

  • co. (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Great patina! I'd leave it just like so. @seller, what is the approximate age / miles traveled of the timing belt?

  • Billd (seller) 2 yearsago

Thanks for your interest. Would you believe the clutch was working perfectly until the day of the photo shoot? On the drive home it started slipping a little in third gear. And I could also smell clutch. Both disks were replaced and pressure plate during the process of bringing this car back to life. I am around to show the car to anyone. And I feel like the buyer could probably drive it to a local Porsche expert in Huntington. Hopefully it’s something not too complicated. I had the car inspected last week and it was shifting beautifully. No grinding ever on this car.

  • sharkhunter84 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Hello- what about the clutch isnt working properly? Thanks!
