Up for auction is this fully restored 1964 Porsche 356 SC Coupe finished in Silver Metallic over red leather. Reported to have been kept in the same family from new, this 1964 example was treated to a multi-year nut and bolt restoration by the experts at Klasse 356 under the supervision of the original owner’s son in law.  During this time, the car was completely gone through and the engine was rebuilt with an 86mm big bore kit for improved performance.  Accompanied by its original date-coded wheels, manuals, and bill of sale as well as service and restoration records, this number’s-matching 356 SC is now being offered by its seller in New York while showing 82k miles on the odometer, of which approximately 500 are said to have been driven since the restoration.

During its restoration at Klasse 356 which took place from 2004-2006, this example was taken down to bare metal and professionally refinished in Silver Metallic from its original color of White.  The paint is said to be in excellent condition save for some minor uneven blends on the front hood (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery). The floor panels, pedal box, battery box, and longitudinal support were totally replaced by Klasse 356, invoices are provided for reference. This 356 currently rides on a restored set of correct-type wheels with new tires, and the original date-coded factory wheels will accompany the sale as well.

Inside, the interior was completely redone in its originally specified red leather upholstery and grey square-weave carpeting.  An aftermarket wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel has been equipped and the original steering wheel will also be included in the sale.  All gauges and electrical components are said to be fully functional.

This SC carries its original air-cooled 1600 flat-four engine that has been fully rebuilt and upgraded with an 86 MM big-bore kit for increased power output and a displacement of 1720cc.  The rear wheels are driven through the original number’s matching 4-speed manual gearbox.  The car was completely mechanically restored by Klasse 356 and a full service was recently carried out to maintain excellent running order.  Records from the restoration are included and this SC is said to be in excellent operating condition with approximately 500 miles driven since the restoration.

This sale will include a set of keys, a toolkit, spare tire, books and manuals, the original bill of sale, factory date-coded wheels, the original steering wheel, and a clean title.  Having been painstakingly restored by marque experts, this lifelong 1-family owned 356 SC is now ready to being its journey with a new owner.

@momotime Hi there, please see Photo #64 in the photo album for a clear photo of the engine and chassis number. Photo #66 Shows the original Bill of Sale which shows the original colors.

I have never seen the motor and gear box number listed on either the bill of sale OR original owners manual?? Would you please photo and post. This would be interesting because I have only seen these numbers listed on either the original Kardex or a COA Thank you

@jeffsnook Hi Jeff, sorry that you had that misunderstanding, but in the classic car world "matching numbers" refers to the actual numbers i.e. engine, transmission, serial number. We made it clear that the car was originally white as confirmed by the original Bill of Sale.

    Thank you - Mathias :)

    Does the clock work?

  • jeffsnook (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@cooperclassics Hi there, my understanding of numbers matching includes the paint code numbers which you state was changed from white to silver. Not a bad change in my opinion, but just does not meet my definition of "numbers matching". Thanks for your reply and additional photos.

@jeffsnook In regards to the other questions, the car was fully serviced just prior to our acquisition at Power-Tech of NJ (Mike Daino is the lead tech there). The following was performed and the car has no issues and is ready to be enjoyed and loved.
    -Valve Cover Gaskets
    -5 New Tires
    -All wheels refinished and balanced
    -Exhaust Flange gaskets replaced
    -Valve adjustment and tune up.

Afterwards, I drove the car myself personally about 40 miles to ensure it was great, and it is truly a lovely drive.

    Thank you
    -Mathias

@jeffsnook Hi Jeff, We're a little confused by your comment. This is absolutely a matching numbers car as as confirmed by the owners manual and original BOS. Thanks

    Hi All,

As we approach the last two days of the listing, I wanted to make myself available to answer any further questions anyone may have about this beautiful SC. I've personally driven it about 40 miles on the interstate and am very familiar with the car. It's not often you find a car with a story and history as clear cut as this one, and with the original Bill of Sale in hand too!

Let me know if anyone has any questions.

    -Mathias

Hello Gentlemen, happy new year! We appreciate your interest and questions on our SC. We were under the impression that this auction was going to go live on Monday, so therefore we weren't able to upload everything from our in-office file before the auction went live. We have submitted the additional info to PCar Market, including new photos and info. This all should be live now.

If I've missed anything, or if you have any other questions, please let me know. I have personally driven this car on the highway and it's in excellent mechanical shape and ready to be enjoyed and loved.

Car has nice eyeball but a few things concern me.
    No undercarriage pix
    No trunk pix
Door sill rubbers don't look fresh as they should be
Wrinkled upholstery suggest less than expert trim work
What else are the missing photos hiding?

  • jeffsnook (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

Sweet 356! Great German color combo, even if not number's matching. Seller, could you inform us if the 500 miles since restoration have completely "sorted out" this nice restoration? Are there any current issues? I agree with @JuanVedez and @Pafici that more photos are necessary for this beauty!

    Good looking car.
Pics of car before and during restoration would be helpful, together with info re rust repairs then.
    Also compression/leak down on motor.

Finally, please post a variety of undercarriage shots, as these will be needed to get fair value for you.

    Thanks
