The Porsche 996 represents perhaps the most significant change to the 911 sports car. To the chagrin of many purists, the 996 was larger, more refined, and significantly more advanced than its predecessors. Moreover, it did away with the traditional air-cooled engine architecture in favor of a less temperamental and more capable water-cooled platform.

Styled by Pinky Lai under Porsche Design Chief Harm Lagaay, the looks of the 996 were also highly controversial with its subdued fender flares, rounded bumpers, and "fried egg" shaped headlights shared with the entry-level Boxster model. Despite its considerable advancements, the 996 has been largely overlooked by enthusiasts over the years as an entry-level 911 for the Porsche novice.

From high-performance GT homologation cars to powerful all-wheel-drive Turbos and nimble narrow-body Carreras, the 996 offered a 911 sports car to satisfy just about any customer.

Its wind-tunnel develop aerodynamics, rigid high-strength steel chassis, and precise steering made the 996 a delight to guide through corners while advanced engine technologies such as the distributor-less ignition, VarioCam, and resonant induction systems gave the new water-cooled flat-six engine enough punch to compete with top sports cars of its day.

As the 911 became continually larger, softer, and disconnected from the road, enthusiasts have developed a taste for the more visceral models of generations prior. In turn, there has been a resurgence of interest in the 996 with critics lauding the model's razor-sharp handling, responsive power, and downright fun driving characteristics.

Some have even considered the widebody Carrera 45 model to be one of the most beautiful 91 1s of all time. Collectors have even caught on, recognizing some of the more unique configurations and rare options such as Aerokit cars, sunroof deletes, Power Kits, and of course the exceptionally beautiful interiors crafted by Porsche's Exclusive Department.

All things considered, the 996 has gone from the "bargain" 911 to what is likely the next generation to see major appreciation and collectability in coming years. Whether you are a racer, spirited driver, or discerning collector, there is surely a 996 to pique your interest. As these models become increasingly sought-after and valuable, we believe there has never been a better time to add one to your garage.
